With the sad passing of Nelson Mandela we have lost one of the greatest statesmen of our time and possibly the greatest African of all time. Here we had a man who spent 27 unjust years in jail and came out not bitter, but full of forgiveness. “If you want to make peace with your enemy,” he said, “you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”
After becoming the leader of his nation he could have done anything he liked, but he didn’t use his power in a selfish way to hound his opponents. Instead he used his new position to promote peace and reconciliation, bringing a previously divided nation together. The United Nations General Assembly recognised his achievements when they hailed Mandela’s “promotion of a culture of peace,” passing a resolution that July 18 every year should be observed around the world as ‘Nelson Mandela International Day’.
Though the world mourns Nelson’s death we must also be thankful that he lived a long and valuable life despite the many hardships that he endured. “We must use time wisely and forever realise that the time is always ripe to do right,” he once said. And this was a credo that he lived up to. Hundreds of years from now he will be remembered as an angel of peace, and a true legend, when all the tyrants and despots who would wage war on their own nations have been consigned to the dustbin of history. The world will never see another Nelson Mandela, but his inspiration lives on with his message of peace. Both must never be forgotten.
