Remarks made by The Duchess of Cambridge at the Anna Freud Centre ‘Centre of Excellence’ Opening

Each of you, in your own words, and in your own way, have explained why this matters so much, and how passionate you are about the Anna Freud Centre. What you have said really brings its work to life.

We are all here today because we care so much about transforming the mental health of children, young people, and their families.

I have learnt so much about early childhood development and the importance of support for parents through your work here at the Anna Freud Centre. This is something I really do care about.

The ambition for the new Kantor Centre of Excellence is hugely inspiring. The bringing together of research, education, practice and policy, all in one place, will take Anna Freud Centre’s mission to the next level. It is testament to what can be achieved when people work together to realise a shared vision.

Thank you all for playing your part in creating this amazing new facility. I am delighted to be here and hugely proud to share this moment with you, and to open The Anna Freud Centre’s National Centre for Excellence.

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE TO VISIT NORTH WALES

Wednesday 8th May, 2019

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit North Wales on Wednesday 8th May to meet with individuals and organisations in the region who are encouraging people to look after their communities and protect the natural environment.

Their Royal Highnesses will firstly visit the Caernarfon Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter Base. Until 2015, search and rescue operated out of RAF Valley on Anglesey, where The Duke worked as an RAF search and rescue pilot between 2010-2013. Their Royal Highnesses will view the Coastguard’s new Sikorsky S92 helicopters, and meet members of the search and rescue team, many of whom previously worked alongside The Duke at RAF Valley. The Duke and Duchess will then join a discussion with crewmembers about the mental health challenges that result from working as first responders, and will also meet staff from the Wales Air Ambulance, which operates next door to Caernarfon Search and Rescue.

From Caernarfon, Their Royal Highnesses will travel to Anglesey to visit Halen Môn Anglesey Sea Salt, a thriving local business which has been operating for over two decades, and which won the Queen’s Award for Sustainability in 2017. The Duke and Duchess will see the salt making process from hand harvesting to packaging, and will learn more about Halen Môn’s collaborations with other local food producers, and their involvement in community initiatives.

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE TO OPEN ANNA FREUD CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

London

Wednesday 1st May, 2019

The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, will officially open the new Centre of Excellence at Rodney Street on Wednesday 1st May. Her Royal Highness will also visit the Pears Family School in its new building and meet with children and their families participating in a music class.

The new building, The Kantor Centre of Excellence, brings together for the first time under one roof, experts and leading practitioners in neuroscience, mental health, social care, child development, research and education, alongside children, young people and their families. By combining all of the elements required to improve both understanding and practice in children’s mental health, in one coherent space, the Centre can continue to pursue its ambition of transforming mental health provision for children and their families across the UK.

The Anna Freud Centre’s work now reaches over one million children in schools as they work to reduce the burden of mental health difficulties that children can face. For those unsuited or unable to meet the demands of mainstream school provision, the Pears Family School can help. The school combines mental health care and education, for children aged 5-14, in a setting in which a parent or significant adult family member participates in the classroom with their child.

This visit marks The Duchess’s continued desire to shine a spotlight on child mental health issues and the importance of early intervention, and working with the whole family, can make to those in vulnerable situations. Her Royal Highness is keen to draw attention to the ways in which this charity is making progress in their work to lead a step change in children’s and young people’s mental health care.

The Duchess of Cambridge first visited The Anna Freud Centre in 2015, before becoming Patron in February 2016. Since then, Her Royal Highness has visited the Family School and the Centre’s Early Years Parenting Unit (EYPU) and has met many professionals and experts from the Centre through her Early Years work with The Royal Foundation and the ‘Mentally Healthy Schools’ initiative, of which the Centre is a key partner.

The Countess of Wessex will visit India

Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex, Vice Patron of The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, will visit India in her final overseas tour as Vice-Patron ahead of the Trust’s planned closure in January 2020. The Countess will see the work the charitable foundation has supported to tackle avoidable blindness in babies born prematurely and to hear about the impact of programmes successfully launched by Queen’s Young Leaders. Her Royal Highness will visit Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi from Monday 29th April to Friday 3rd May.

The Countess of Wessex will visit three hospitals across Hyderabad to see first-hand the work the Trust has helped to establish to prevent premature babies from losing their sight. Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a major cause of childhood blindness affecting thousands of preterm babies born in India – home to the highest number of preterm births in the world. The Countess will see the screening and treatment services that have been introduced to ensure babies at risk of the avoidable condition receive the timely treatment they need to prevent blindness. Her Royal Highness will meet with leading eye health professionals who have been instrumental in setting up and delivering the services, and parents and children who have, or have had, the condition.

In Mumbai, The Countess will visit a school where Her Royal Highness will meet Queen’s Young Leader, Deane de Menezes, whose project ‘Red is the new Green’ aims to destigmatise menstruation, improve access to menstrual hygiene and ultimately prevent female absenteeism in schools. The Countess will also visit a health centre where Her Royal Highness will meet Queen’s Young Leader Aditya Kulkarni whose pioneering ‘Care Mother’ antenatal app has helped to reduce maternal and child mortality rates in India. The Countess will meet health workers and mothers, and hear how the app has helped over 30,000 women from disadvantaged communities in India access antenatal care.

In New Delhi, The Countess will join the British High Commissioner in hosting a reception to celebrate the collaborative efforts to advance eye health in India. The Countess will deliver a speech in which Her Royal Highness will reflect on the progress achieved by the Trust in the name of The Queen and encourage efforts to continue and be taken to a greater scale so that vision is brought to everyone, everywhere. The reception will recognise the preparatory work underway to create a Vision Catalyst Fund – an endeavour inspired by the work of the Trust – which will see public and private sector organisations with expertise in eye health coming together with an ambition to accelerate systems change and expand universal eye health across the globe.

The Countess will also undertake engagements in New Delhi in support of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda (WPS) and championing the empowerment of women. Her Royal Highness will join a roundtable discussion on WPS to share ideas and hear how India is engaging in this area and consider how the UK and India can work more collaboratively in tackling challenges relating to gender based violence in conflict. The Countess will also learn about the Women on Wheels initiative which empowers young women from poorer communities to become professional drivers to enable them to have better employment opportunities. Her Royal Highness will conclude the visit by attending a reception celebrating a cross-section of remarkable women living and working in India.

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE TO ATTEND ANZAC DAY SERVICE

Westminster Abbey, London

Thursday 25th April, 2019

The Duchess of Cambridge will attend the Anzac Day Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey on Thursday 25th April.

Anzac Day has been commemorated in London since the first anniversary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli in 1916, when King George V attended a service at Westminster Abbey and more than 2,000 Australian and New Zealand troops marched through the streets. Since then, Anzac Day has become an important moment to recognise the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who died during the landings, and to honour the sacrifices of men and women in all wars. Anzac Day is commemorated as a public holiday in both countries with memorial ceremonies held at various locations.

The Duchess of Cambridge will join guests, including the Australian High Commissioner, at the Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving. This will be a traditional church service, incorporating an ‘Act of Remembrance’, the Last Post and Kemal Ataturk’s words from Anzac Cove read by the Turkish Ambassador to the UK.

The Duke of Gloucester will also attend the service.
