THE PRINCE OF WALES WILL VISIT THE WHITTLE LABORATORY IN CAMBRIDGE

The Prince of Wales, Royal Founding Patron of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, will visit the Whittle Laboratory, 1 JJ Thomson Ave, Cambridge CB3 0DY.

The Whittle Laboratory

The Whittle Laboratory is a power research laboratory based at the University of Cambridge. It was opened in 1973 by Sir Frank Whittle, whose original designs led to the development of today’s highly efficient systems that can power huge aircrafts over long distances. Over the last 50 years, the Whittle Laboratory has built on this heritage, playing a crucial role in shaping the propulsion and power sectors through industry partnerships with Rolls-Royce, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Siemens.

The New Whittle Laboratory will house the National Centre for Propulsion and Power, due to open in 2022 with funding from the Aerospace Technology Institute. It is designed to revolutionise technology development, making the process at least 10 times faster and cheaper, enabling rapid development for ultra-low emission aircraft and low carbon power generation, and covering around 80% of the UK’s future aerodynamic technology needs.

The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (C.I.S.L.)

The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (C.I.S.L.) is a globally influential institute developing leadership and solutions for a sustainable economy.

The Prince of Wales, as Royal Founding Patron, has inspired and supported many of C.I.S.L.’s initiatives including The Prince of Wales Global Sustainability Fellowship Programme, The Prince of Wales Business and Sustainability Programme and The Prince of Wales Corporate Leaders Group.

C.I.S.L. and The Whittle will collaborate to raise the profile of the New Whittle Laboratory’s potential to develop a world-first zero carbon flight to inspire greater industry ambition; and to develop trickle-down technologies that enable decarbonisation across the aviation industry and other sectors. C.I.S.L. will support the investment required for the New Whittle Lab and engage senior leaders in industry and government to support higher ambition decarbonisation policies.

The Whittle Laboratory and C.I.S.L. share the objective of driving a net zero economy, through academic, industry and policy leadership and collaboration; specifically, in this case, by accelerating the innovations required to decarbonise the aviation sector to Net Zero by 2050.

Statement from HM The Queen

Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family.

Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family.

I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.

I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family.

It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.

 

Statement from Buckingham Palace

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.

As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments. They will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties.

With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.

The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home.

Buckingham Palace does not comment on the details of security arrangements. There are well established independent processes to determine the need for publicly-funded security.

This new model will take effect in the Spring of 2020.

THE DUCHESS OF CORNWALL WILL CARRY OUT ENGAGEMENTS IN THE WEST MIDLANDS

Engagement 1

The Duchess of Cornwall will tour Elmhurst Ballet School of which she is Patron and visit the school’s newest department, the Health and Wellbeing Centre. HRH will meet staff and pupils, observe a ballet class and watch a performance during the visit.

The Duchess of Cornwall will meet donors, parents, governors and Elmhurst Vice Presidents, Wayne McGregor (Resident Choreographer at the Royal Ballet) and Carlos Acosta (recently appointed Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet.) The Duchess will then move on to the Health and Wellbeing centre. Here HRH will learn of how Elmhurst works to prevent injury, meet with physiotherapists, school nurses and the school’s strength and conditioning coach.

HRH will also meet a number of school representatives, including Head Boy, Bradley Howell and Head Girl, Maddie Irwin.

The Duchess will then observe a ballet class in Studio One and go on to the auditorium where she will watch a short (10 minute) performance, meet with the school’s Senior Leadership Team and pause for a photograph with pupils. HRH will sign the visitors’ book before departing.

Elmhurst Ballet School

The Duchess of Cornwall and The Prince of Wales share a strong appreciation of dance. Last year The Duchess attended a reception at Victory Services Club to mark the Ninetieth Anniversary of the British Dance Council. The Duchess has acted as Patron of Elmhurst since 2006 and last visited the school in November 2014. The Prince of Wales has been President of Birmingham Royal Ballet since 2003.

Elmhurst Ballet School is a world-renowned centre of excellence in association with Birmingham Royal Ballet and prepares talented young dancers aged between 11 and 19 to become the thinking dance professionals of the future. The school nurtures individuality through a holistic approach which helps students to become independent, collaborative and versatile artists, ready to take their professional places on the world stage. Elmhurst’s dance training is of the highest quality and is delivered by current and former dance professionals. This training is enhanced by opportunities to work with Birmingham Royal Ballet, visiting choreographers and dance artists. Elite but not elitist, Elmhurst believes that talent is classless and its exceptional training opportunities should be available to young dancers regardless of their financial, social or cultural backgrounds. Whilst Elmhurst is an independent school, typically some 80% of students benefit from Government support to train at the school.

New Vice President

Elmhurst welcomed Wayne McGregor CBE, multi-award-winning Choreographer and Director and Resident Choreographer at The Royal Ballet, to their eminent board of Vice Presidents. Wayne’s experience and unique outlook is already influencing Elmhurst’s students through a three-year dance collaboration with Studio Wayne McGregor, which brings a new dimension of our dance training. Launched in September 2018, the collaboration brings opportunities for final year students to perform excerpts from Wayne’s complex and inspiring contemporary repertoire, and to work with his team.

Health and Wellbeing

Carlos Acosta CBE opened the new state-of-the-art Health and Wellbeing Centre in 2016, a dedicated facility which enables the school to grow its sector leading health and wellbeing programme. The centre was in development the last time HRH visited the school in 2014.

The programme covers all aspects of physical and emotional health, from nutrition to reactive and preventative interventions. Sustaining an injury serious enough to warrant time out of training or work for recovery and rehabilitation is a sad reality for most dancers. Working with the University of Wolverhampton, leaders in sports science research, Elmhurst has been conducting studies into the correlation between body strength and injury avoidance and management. Early results are extremely promising and strength and conditioning is now an integral part of their programme.

The Duchess of Cornwall will celebrate British craftsmanship by visiting the Launer Factory to tour the workshop and meet owners, staff and apprentices.

Her Royal Highness will tour the factory accompanied by CEO, Gerald Bodmer throughout and witness the product-making process, during which she will try her hand at gold-blocking (applying gold lettering to leather.) On the first floor, HRH will meet staff and watch the final product-making process. HRH will then enjoy tea and cake with all 22 workers and owners of the factory.

Launer London is an established British luxury leather brand of more than 75 years. Its head office is located in Surrey, a showroom in Regent Street, London and factory in Walsall. The factory is the heartbeat of the company and hand makes all handbags and leather goods for men and women using traditional and time honoured methods. Launer designs are crafted by skilled artisans and can take up to four weeks to produce. Each finished design is then packaged for shipping to customers and stores Internationally as well as the UK.

The brand was awarded the Royal Warrant in 1968 and saved from extinction in 1981 by Gerald Bodmer who has with his wife Sue Bodmer ensured the brand flourished. It now enjoys its greatest success with a global presence and prestige reputation. Launer is unique with a contemporary appeal built on a legacy of tradition and meticulous craftsmanship. Its signature bag is the Traviata with ‘twisted rope’ logo.

THE DUCHESS OF CORNWALL WILL VISIT PROSPECT HOSPICE IN SWINDON

The Duchess of Cornwall, President, will visit Prospect Hospice in celebration of their 40th anniversary year and to unveil a new embroidery designed by Marlborough Embroiderers Guild, hand-sewn for the milestone.

Prospect Hospice

Prospect Hospice is a local charity that supports a community of more than 300,000 people in Swindon, Marlborough and North East Wiltshire. The hospice cares for and supports around 7,300 patients, carers and family members each year, offering a range of services developed to bring care, comfort and confidence at life’s most difficult time. For patients, there are teams of nurses, doctors and therapists, bringing care at the hospice in Wroughton, at the outreach centre in Marlborough, in their own homes as well as care homes, and through a palliative care team based at the Great Western Hospital. Carers and family members are also helped with access to services designed to support them following the death of a loved one who received care provided by the hospice.

In 2020, Prospect Hospice celebrate 40 years of delivering these vital services to local people and is proud to be able to offer them free of charge. This is thanks to the dedication of the local community that continues to raise these vital funds.

Her Royal Highness has been President of Prospect Hospice since August 2013.

Marlborough and District Embroiderers Guild

The group meet in Lockeridge in Wiltshire and arrange stitch days, speaker workshops and tutored courses for those with a passion for embroidery or who are looking to learn a new skill. They also run a Young Embroiderers group which meets during school holidays and is aimed at girls and boys aged 6 to 18.

The embroidery has taken over 30 women from the group, four years to complete and depicts flowers mentioned in the poem ‘All These I Learnt’ by travel writer Robert Byron. The poem was read by The Prince of Wales on BBC Radio 4 to celebrate National Poetry Day in 2006.

The scene on the embroidery represents Savernake Forest in Wiltshire and is divided into three parts showing the forest in spring, summer and autumn. Each flower was individually drawn by organiser Margret Heath before they were painted onto cloth and sewn over. The finished embroidery will be revealed for the first time during Her Royal Highnesses visit to the Hospice.

Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family.

My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.

Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.

It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK.

These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.

THE DUKE OF SUSSEX WILL HOST THE RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP 2021 DRAWS

The Duke of Sussex will host the Rugby League World Cup 2021 draws for the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments at Buckingham Palace on Thursday 16th January 2020.

His Royal Highness was announced as Patron of the Rugby Football League in December 2016, succeeding Her Majesty The Queen, who held the role for 64 years.

The draws will be streamed live across the Royal Family and Rugby League World Cup 2021 Twitter and Facebook channels. Prior to the draws, the Duke will meet with representatives from all 21 nations taking part in the tournament, as well as watch children from a local school play rugby league in the Buckingham Palace gardens.

The Rugby League World Cup 2021
The tournament is the pinnacle event for rugby league and will take place from 23rd October – 27th November 2021 in 17 cities across England. Sixteen men’s, eight women’s and eight wheelchair nations from 21 nations, including Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, France, Greece, Jamaica, Italy, Ireland, Lebanon, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Scotland, Tonga and Wales, will be competing to be crowned world champions. It will be the first time in tournament history that the men’s, women’s and wheelchair events are held simultaneously.

The Duke of Sussex has always strongly believed in the role of sport to bring communities together and change people’s lives. Rugby League World Cup 2021 is keen to ensure a real social impact from the three tournaments, focusing on communities across some of the most deprived areas in England. Its InspirationalALL legacy programme includes the provision of funding to enable organisations to develop their facilities. The legacy programme will deliver initiatives covering health, culture and education using this major sporting event to engage local communities.

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE TO VISIT BRADFORD

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will travel to Bradford on Wednesday 15th January to visit a number of projects which support the community and promote cohesion within it, in one of the UK’s most diverse cities.

Their Royal Highnesses will first visit City Hall in Bradford’s Centenary Square to join a group of young people from across the community to hear about life in Bradford. The Duke and Duchess will then meet representatives from local employers and businesses who are helping young people into employment. Before departing Centenary Square, Their Royal Highnesses will have the opportunity to meet members of the public gathered outside City Hall.

The Duke and Duchess will visit one of Bradford’s Khidmat Centres, whose main focus is to help the most vulnerable members of the community from minority ethnic backgrounds. On arrival, Their Royal Highnesses will hear about the activities and workshops offered at the centre, and the organisations that they support.

The Duke and Duchess will then join a session involving groups supported by Better Start Bradford, which delivers over 20 projects to pregnant women and families with children under the age of 4. Their Royal Highnesses will meet families from the ‘Older Yet Wiser’ project, a unique and innovative workshop series for grandparents who have child-caring responsibilities for their grandchildren. Participants in the workshop are given tools to enhance their relationship with their grandchildren whilst receiving up-to-date information on raising children in the 21st century.

The Duchess’s longstanding work on the early years has highlighted the importance of supporting children and families during this seminal period of their lives, and the importance of all members of society in raising children.

Finally, The Duke and Duchess will join a workshop run by Near Neighbours, an organisation which brings people together in communities across the UK that are religiously and ethnically diverse, so that they can get to know each other better, build relationships of trust, and collaborate together on initiatives that improve the local community that they live in.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, will host a reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the UK-Africa Investment Summit on Monday 20th January.

The UK-Africa Investment Summit, hosted by the UK government, will take place in London on Monday 20 January. It will bring together heads of state and government and senior representatives from African countries, key multilateral agencies and high profile UK and African businesses.

The summit will demonstrate the strength of the relationship between the UK and Africa, showcase and promote the breadth and quality of investment opportunities across Africa, and highlight the UK’s commitment to supporting economic development in Africa, including through the creation of jobs and new partnerships.
