The Duke of Cambridge, Commodore-in-Chief of the Submarine Service, will attend Submariners’ Remembrance Service and Parade on Sunday 4th November, at Middle Temple in London.

This service and parade is held each year to honour submariners of all generations who have ‘Crossed the Bar’ in service to their country. The service will be conducted by the Honorary Chaplain to the Submariners Association, the Reverend Paul Jupp, and is followed by the laying of wreaths. During the service, submariners from several generations will read a roll call of submarines lost.

His Royal Highness will lay a wreath during the service, take the salute and on conclusion of the service join the “Toast to Absent Friends”, before joining guests for a reception in Middle Temple Hall. The Royal Marines Band will play the Royal Salute.

Up to 400 serving and veteran submariners, including veterans of The Second World War, are expected to attend, including Admiral of the Fleet Lord Boyce KG GCB OBE DL, Patron of the Submariners Association; Rear Admiral Niall Kilgour, President of the Submariners Association; and the Chief Commoner of London.

Mrs Gillian Molyneux, whose husband Lieutenant Commander Ian Molyneux was killed on board the submarine HMS Astute in Southampton in 2011 will lay a wreath on behalf of submariners’ widows. Commander Molyneux was posthumously awarded the George Medal for his bravery.

The ceremony was instituted in 1923 following the unveiling of the National Submarine Memorial in 1922 on Victoria Embankment, and is held on the Sunday before the national Remembrance Day Parade. Middle Temple is adjacent the memorial. The Duke of Cambridge is a Royal Bencher of Middle Temple.
