The Duchess of Cambridge will visit Luxembourg

Thursday 11th May

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, at the request of Her Majesty’s Government, will visit Luxembourg on 11th May to participate in the official commemoration of the 1867 Treaty of London. During the visit, Her Royal Highness will also attend a series of engagements to celebrate the cultural and historic ties between the UK and Luxembourg.

On arrival, The Duchess will visit the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM) to tour current exhibitions by British artists Sir Tony Cragg and Darren Almond. At the museum, Her Royal Highness will also attend a reception with leading young Luxembourgers in the fields of culture, education, business and the charitable sector.

In the centre of the capital, The Duchess will then visit Place Clairefontaine, and tour a cycling themed festival, which celebrates the shared UK and Luxembourg passion for the sport. Her Royal Highness will be introduced to the Grand Duchy’s most famous cycling icons, and meet children who are designing Tour de France jerseys, ahead of the tour coming to Luxembourg in July. The Duchess will also unveil a mural of British cyclist Tom Simpson and Luxembourgish cycling legend Charly Gaul.

Next, The Duchess will call on Their Royal Highnesses The Grand Duke and The Grand Duchess of Luxembourg at the Grand Ducal Palace.

Her Royal Highness will then join the official commemoration of the 1867 Treaty of London, which confirmed Luxembourg’s independence and neutrality, at the Luxembourg City Museum. Here, a new collection about Luxembourg’s history will be unveiled. Following this, Her Royal Highness, with other guests, will be led on a short walk outside the museum to take in the stunning views of the capital on the corniche (viewing trail).

The Duchess will continue to the Dräi Eechelen Museum for the main commemoration event, where the Prime Minister, Mayor and Museum Director will speak. The Duchess will be given a guided tour of ‘Luxembourg 1867 – Open City’, the new exhibition, which explains how the dismantling of Luxembourg’s fortifications laid the foundation for the transformation of Luxembourg into an open and outward-looking city and country.

The Duke of Edinburgh opens new Warner Stand at Lord’s

Wednesday 3rd May 2017

The Duke of Edinburgh, Honorary Life Member, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) will visit Lord’s Cricket Ground to open the new Warner Stand.

In 2013, the MCC unveiled a plan for the redevelopment of Lord’s which will take place over the next two decades. Originally built in 1958, the new stand, which is named after celebrated former England captain Sir Pelham Warner, represents completion of the first major phase of the redevelopment.

Upon arrival at Lord’s, His Royal Highness will proceed to the Committee Room to meet representatives of the MCC, alongside engineers and members of the construction team who have been involved in creating the new stand. The Duke will then visit the outfield, where he will meet architects and descendants of Sir Pelham Warner.

On the outfield, His Royal Highness will watch a children’s cricket match and view a display of equipment including various bats, a bat gauge, a pink ball and a set of stumps with tethered bails. The Duke will cut a ribbon and unveil a plaque to open the Warner Stand, and join guests in Pelham’s Dining Room for lunch.

The Duke of Edinburgh has a long association with the game of cricket and is officially involved with over 20 cricketing institutions worldwide. His Royal Highness was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the MCC in 1948, and was elected to be President of the Club twice, in 1949-50 and 1974-75.

Prince Philip was captain of the cricket team when he was a pupil at Gordonstoun. During the 1950s, The Duke often played in charity cricket matches in aid of the National Playing Fields Association, of which he became President in 1948. In 1950, HRH became Patron – or Twelfth Man – of the Lord’s Taverners, a cricketing charity which helps young disadvantaged and disabled people through sport.

Named after Sir Pelham Warner, the new Warner Stand has been designed to deliver an enhanced spectator experience for members of MCC and their guests, as well as offering a significant upgrade to facilities to ensure Lord’s remains the most prestigious ground in the world to play and watch international cricket.

Marylebone Cricket Club is the world’s most active cricket club, the owner of Lord’s Ground and the guardian of the Laws and Spirit of the game. Founded in 1787, it is recognised as the sole authority on the game’s Laws and moved to its current home in 1814. There are 18,000 Full and 5,500 Associate Members of MCC.

The current Lord’s Cricket Ground is its third incarnation. The first ever match played at ‘Lord’s Cricket Ground’ came in 1787 when businessman Thomas Lord staged a game between Middlesex and Essex at a newly built ground in what was then known as Dorset Fields. By 1811, MCC had moved to a new Ground in the Eyre Estate of St John’s Wood. This ground proved unpopular but when plans emerged for the Regent’s Canal to be built straight through it, Thomas Lord gratefully accepted compensation and moved the Ground to its current location in 1814.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will visit
Pangbourne College to celebrate its Centenary

Tuesday 9th May 2017

Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will visit Pangbourne College, Berkshire, on the occasion of the school’s centenary.

Upon arrival, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will be met by the Headmaster and Chairman of Governors of Pangbourne College. Her Majesty and His Royal Highness will proceed to the Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel, accompanied by the Bishop and College Chaplain, to attend a service to mark the school’s centenary.

After the service, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will meet current students, parents, staff and College alumni.

After lunch, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will watch a College Parade, reflecting the College’s longstanding military connection. During the Parade, The Queen will present a new military flag, or ‘colour’, to the College.

The Queen will present The Queen’s Gold Medal to two students before departing.

Founded in 1917 as a training college for officers of the merchant navy, Pangbourne College is now a co-educational boarding and day school for 400 pupils aged between 11-18. Ceremonial traditions, such as Parades, are still practiced with a modern focus on the development of social and leadership skills for the future.

The Queen’s Gold Medal is awarded every year to the Chief Cadet Captain of the College. The award was first presented in 1927 by the then Prince of Wales, and was, until 1953, called the King’s Gold Medal. Since 2008, two Queen’s Gold Medals have been awarded annually, one each to the male and female Chief Cadet Captain of College.

The Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel was opened in 2000 by Her Majesty The Queen on her third visit to Pangbourne College. The Queen last visited Pangbourne College in June 2007, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, to attend a Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Liberation of the Falklands Islands.

The Duchess of Cambridge Will Visit Farms for City Children

The Duchess of Cambridge Will Visit Farms for City Children

Arlingham, Gloucester

Wednesday 3rd May, 2017

The Duchess of Cambridge will visit Farms for City Children to see their work giving young people from inner cities the chance to spend a week on a real working farm. Her Royal Highness will join a school group of pupils and teachers as they muck in around the farm, and will meet children’s author Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare to learn more about the organisation they founded in 1976.

The charity offers urban children from all over the country a unique opportunity to live and work together for a week at a time on a real farm in the heart of the countryside. It is an intense, ‘learning through doing’ experience of a different life – for children who may not know where their food comes from and have limited opportunities to explore the outside world. The organisation now has three working farms, where it welcomes around 3,200 children and 400 teachers a year.

During the week long immersion programme, pupils gain an understanding farming, the countryside and food production, using practical, hands-on learning outside the classroom to enhancing the requirements of the national curriculum. They also gain social and emotional development through teamwork, and the chance to celebrate success and build self-worth through work and the completion of tasks.

The Duchess will start her visit with a briefing about the farm before joining a story time session led by Michael Morpurgo. A key aim of the week is to draw on the farm experience and the charity’s literary heritage to promote literacy and storytelling. Her Royal Highness will then join the children as they complete work around the farm yard, working in the allotments and tending to pigs, sheep and chickens as required. The visit will conclude with a short tea party, where her Royal Highness will meet some of the volunteers, staff and trustees.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry Show ‘It’s Okay To Say’
In Latest Film For Heads Together Series

A new film featuring The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry has been released today as part of the Heads Together campaign’s #OkToSay series.

The film captures a conversation between Their Royal Highnesses that occurred at Kensington Palace on the afternoon of Wednesday 19th April as they looked ahead to this weekend’s Virgin Money London Marathon and reflected on the growth of the campaign over the last year.

The conversation covers a range of topics including the emotional changes new parents go through, bereavement, the stresses of modern childhood, and dealing with trauma in the workplace.

The film also explains the story behind the Heads Together campaign and Their Royal Highnesses’ goal to shine a spotlight on the power of conversations – both to shatter stigma on mental health and to help people get the help they need.

A spokesman for Kensington Palace said:

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have been overwhelmed by the response to the Heads Together campaign. We are in the middle of a truly national conversation on mental health.

“They are incredibly grateful to everyone who has shared their stories in recent weeks. And having asked others to start conversations on mental health with their friends and families, they wanted to show that they are taking part as well. They hope the film shows how positive a conversation on mental health can be.”

The Queen celebrates 40th Anniversary of Motability

Tuesday 25th April 2017

Her Majesty The Queen will host a ceremony in the Quadrangle at Windsor Castle to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Motability, a charity that enables disabled people, their families and carers to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair using their mobility allowance.

On display in the Quadrangle at Windsor Castle will be specialised vehicles demonstrating the technological advances that have been made over the course of 40 years. During the ceremony, The Queen will present keys to new vehicles to five Motability customers including:

  • A former Royal Marine who sustained life changing injuries whilst serving on operations in Afghanistan
  • A student diagnosed with autism whose car will allow her to independently get to college
  • A school boy who will travel to school in his Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
  • A disability advisor whose uses an adapted Drive from Wheelchair vehicle
  • A gentleman who contracted polio at the age of 11 who has been a customer since the Scheme began in 1977

The Queen has been Patron of Motability since its inception. In a message congratulating the charity on reaching its 40th Anniversary, The Queen said:

“I congratulate Motability not only on reaching its 40th Anniversary, but also during this time, how it has changed and enriched the lives of millions of disabled people, their families and friends by helping them to access a world of increased mobility and freedom.”

Founded in 1977, Motability is the charity that oversees The Motability Scheme, which helps disabled people remain mobile and independent. Over 600,000 people currently use and benefit from the Scheme which has provided up to 4.5 million vehicles to date.

Motability also helps disabled people by providing grants to those who would not otherwise be able to afford the vehicle or adaptations that they need, and raising awareness of the Scheme among potential customers and people who advise them.

Prince William and Lady Gaga get their #HeadsTogether

PRINCE WILLIAM AND LADY GAGA GET THEIR HEADS TOGETHER ON MENTAL HEALTH TO HELP SHOW YOUNG PEOPLE THAT IT’S ‘OK TO SAY’

Prince William and Lady Gaga have joined forces to encourage more people to have an open conversation about mental health as part of the Heads Together #oktosay film series.

The Royal Family’s Facebook page hosted the World Premiere of a new film of the pair in conversation over FaceTime from their respective homes in London and Los Angeles. They discussed the powerful films that have been released showing people from all walks of life discussing their mental health challenges under the #oktosay banner. Lady Gaga praised them for the ‘beautiful stories’ they told.

Last year Lady Gaga released an open letter through her Born This Way Foundation revealing that she lives with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The Duke was hugely impressed with the openness displayed in the letter and asked Lady Gaga to get involved with the Heads Together campaign.

In their FaceTime call they discussed how opening up and having conversations about mental health was vital to shatter the stigma that still surrounds these issues. Lady Gaga said she felt people with mental health challenges were ‘not hiding anymore’ with The Duke adding that it is time ‘to feel normal about mental health – it’s the same as physical health’ and that good conversations can ‘really make such a difference.’

The Duke and Lady Gaga also made plans to meet in the UK in October to discuss how they can work together and do more to tackle stigma on mental health with Lady Gaga saying ‘we have to make the strongest, most relentless attempt we can to normalise mental health issues.’ They want to have a particular focus on young people.

In the film Prince William said:

“It’s time that everyone speaks up and really feels very normal about mental health, it’s the same as physical health. Everybody has mental health and we shouldn’t be ashamed of it and just having a conversation with a friend or family member can really make such a difference.”

“It’s really important to have this conversation and that you won’t be judged. It’s so important to break open that fear and that taboo which is only going to lead to more problems down the line.”

In the film Lady Gaga said:

“Even though it was hard, (it was) the best thing that could come out of my mental illness was to share it with other people and let our generation, as well as other generations know that if you are feeling not well in your mind that you’re not alone and that people that you think would never have a problem, do.”

“We have to make the strongest, most relentless attempt we can to normalise mental health issues, so that people feel like they can come forward.”

The Heads Together campaign, led by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, today also released new YouGov research on the way young people talk about their mental health, including how they increasingly use phones, emails and social media for these conversations.

The YouGov research published today shows that people aged 18-24 are talking more often than older age groups about their mental health but that they are more likely to talk to a friend and less comfortable talking to family members or the GP, than other age groups. It also shows that young people are much more likely than other age groups to start a conversation about their own mental health via text, email or a social media chat.

….

The #Oktosay films have been published on the Heads Together YouTube page and website and feature a wide range of people including familiar faces such as Stephen Fry, footballer Rio Ferdinand, Stephen Manderson (Professor Green), Cricketer Freddie Flintoff, comedian Ruby Wax, writer Alastair Campbell and model Adwoa Aboah. The films have been released in the run up to the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon, for which Heads Together has the privilege of being the Official Charity of the Year.

Heads Together Charity and Founding Partners have also begun to create their own films showing that it is OK to say. The Mix and Young Minds have released films showing young people talking about their mental health and both Dixons and Unilever have published films showing employees talking to each other about pressures to their mental health. All films tagged with #oktosay are being brought together on to the Heads Together YouTube page.

Recent YouGov research commissioned by Heads Together shows that eight out of ten people who have talked about their own mental health feel that it has helped and the campaign hopes that people who see the films will be encouraged to have their own conversation.

In a statement issued when the films series launched The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry said:

“Attitudes to mental health are at a tipping point. We hope these films show people how simple conversations can change the direction of an entire life. Please share them with your friends and families and join us in a national conversation on mental health in the weeks ahead.”
