DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE AND LAVER CUP JOIN FORCES TO RAISE MONEY FOR DISADVANTAGED AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN

London

Thursday 22nd September

The Duchess of Cambridge and Roger Federer, on behalf of the Laver Cup, have announced a charitable collaboration in aid of two organisations of which The Duchess is Patron – Action for Children and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), whose charitable arm is the LTA Tennis Foundation.

All proceeds raised from tickets to the Laver Cup Open Practice Day, which will take place on Thursday 22nd September at The O2 in London, will be split between the two charities. Tickets to the Open Practice Day, which will give fans the chance to watch Roger Federer and other superstars of Team Europe and Team World take their final practice on-court, go on sale on Monday 22nd August.

Ahead of the Open Practice Day, the collaboration will also see the Laver Cup host a day of tennis in East London for children supported by Action for Children and young people from the local area who are part of the LTA SERVES programme.

The Laver Cup is committed to supporting community initiatives impacting young people in each city it visits and the collaboration with Action for Children and the LTA was initiated by a recommendation from The Duchess. Her Royal Highness is passionate about supporting grassroots tennis and encouraging young people from all backgrounds to become involved in the sport.

The donation received by Action for Children, which helps vulnerable children, young people and their families across the UK, will help to provide practical and emotional care and support for children, as well as making sure they can have fun through activities and days out. Funds given to the LTA Tennis Foundation will fund the SERVES programme, specifically going towards fifty new LTA SERVES coaching programmes for children in some of the most deprived areas of the country, including near The O2 in London, to leave a lasting Laver Cup legacy.

The day of tennis in East London will provide children aged 8-15 with a memorable and engaging tennis experience whilst the Laver Cup is in London and will provide an opportunity to celebrate the charitable collaboration. It will be attended by The Duchess and Roger Federer, Laver Cup co-founder and one of the greatest male tennis players of all time.

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE ATTEND THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Tuesday 2nd August 2022

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Tuesday 2nd August where they will join the Earl and Countess of Wessex watching some of the sports taking place that day.

Whilst in Birmingham, Their Royal Highnesses will also visit the Team England Futures programme, a partnership between SportsAid, of which the Duchess is patron, Sport England, and Commonwealth Games England.

Team England Futures will see around 1,000 talented young athletes and aspiring support staff given the opportunity to attend the games and take a first-hand look behind-the-scenes. Futures aims to better prepare athletes to deliver medal-winning performances as Team England, Team GB or ParalympicsGB debutants at future Games, while giving support staff a first-hand look at the opportunities they could be presented with, and challenges they may face, at a multi-sport competition.

The programme is designed to help participants understand how to perform at their best, how to handle the pressure and distractions associated with a major games, and how to make the most of the experience. In advance of the games, participants have been benefitting from online learning, focusing on a whole range of performance-related topics, as well as mentoring from senior athletes. During the games, every athlete and support staff member participating in Futures will be invited to watch live sporting events and spend time with mentors and ambassadors – including Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth medalists – sharing advice and knowledge from their own careers.

The Duke and Duchess will meet a group of young athletes and support staff at SportsAid House and will hear about the support they are receiving from the Futures programme. Their Royal Highnesses will then take part in an interactive workshop alongside some athletes where they will learn about the practical advice provided to athletes on nutrition and restful sleep.

The Duchess became patron of SportsAid in 2013 and has met many young athletes helped by the charity, as well as Olympians and Paralympians who were previously supported by the organisation, at SportsAid’s training days, performance workshops and fundraising events.

First Official Joint Portrait of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

23rd June, 2022

A new portrait of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, painted by award-winning British portrait artist Jamie Coreth, has been released today.

The Artwork, which is the first official joint portrait of The Duke and Duchess, was commissioned in 2021 by the Cambridgeshire Royal Portrait Fund, held by the Cambridge Community Foundation, as a gift to Cambridgeshire.

With this brief in mind, the artist worked to incorporate the City of Cambridge into the portrait by painting the background with the tones and colours of many of the historical stone buildings that are synonymous with the city. The portrait also includes the use of the hexagonal architectural motif which can be seen on buildings across Cambridge.

Members of the public will be able to view the portrait at the University of Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum for an initial period of three years, after which the artwork will be exhibited in other community spaces and galleries around Cambridgeshire. The painting will also be loaned to the National Portrait Gallery for a short time in 2023 to mark the Gallery’s reopening.

Whilst on display at the Fitzwilliam, the Cambridgeshire Royal Portrait Fund will continue to work with the museum to ensure the portrait is used as a means of encouraging children and young people of all backgrounds from across the country to take an interest in art in all its forms. The Fitzwilliam Museum has an international reputation for the quality of its learning and inclusion programmes, working with Early Years providers, local schools and community outreach programmes to maximise impact and enrich the lives of young people and their families.

Jamie Coreth, artist, said:

“It has been the most extraordinary privilege of my life to be chosen to paint this picture. I wanted to show Their Royal Highnesses in a manner where they appeared both relaxed and approachable, as well as elegant and dignified. As it is the first portrait to depict them together, and specifically during their time as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, I wanted the image to evoke a feeling of balance between their public and private lives. The piece was commissioned as a gift for the people of Cambridgeshire, and I hope they will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed creating it.”

The Duke and Duchess had the opportunity to view the painting as it went on public display today at the Fitzwilliam Museum. During their visit, Their Royal Highnesses met with Jamie Coreth, supporters of the project, and Lady Sibyl Marshall – the wife of the late Sir Michael Marshall, who originally proposed the idea to create the portrait.

HRH THE DUCHESS OF CORNWALL WILL ATTEND THE RIFLES SOUNDING RETREAT

Thursday 9th June 2022

The Duchess of Cornwall, Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles, and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Colonels-in-Chief of 6th and 7th Battalions The Rifles respectively, will attend The Rifles Sounding Retreat, a spectacular evening of unique military music and pageantry.

To Bugle Fanfare, Her Royal Highness will be received by General Sir Patrick Sanders, Colonel Commandant.

Moving to the Major General’s office, The Duchess of Cornwall will join a private reception with RIFLES Generals and Commanding Officers, along with members of the Rifles and their families. Moving outside, Her Royal Highness will meet with bereaved families of Riflemen who lost their lives in Iraq (Op TELIC) and Afghanistan (Op HERRICK).

Her Royal Highness will then proceed to the Royal Marquee with The Duke and The Duchess of Gloucester. Approaching The Duchess of Cornwall, the Rifleman’s Adjutant will seek permission from Her Royal Highness for the Sounding Retreat to start.

Once permission has been granted, the Sounding Retreat will commence, featuring military music and pageantry that will include the English National Opera and Napoleonic re-enactors, the 95th RIFLES.

This sunset parade will take place in front St James’s Park, concluding with a firework display.

In July 2020, The Duchess of Cornwall took over the role of Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles from her father-in-law, The Duke of Edinburgh during two ceremonies at Highgrove and Windsor Castle. To mark this, a new official portrait of Her Royal Highness was released. The Duchess could be seen wearing a brooch commissioned by The Rifles in the portrait. Her Royal Highness was presented with the brooch by General Sir Patrick Sanders, Colonel Commandant of The Rifles during an audience hosted by The Duchess on 12th October 2020.

The Rifles formed in 2007 when four of the most famous Infantry Regiments in the British Army merged into a modern and exciting large regiment optimised for 21st Century warfare. Formed in the crucible of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, The Rifles holds an incredible 913 battle honours, world record 117 Victoria Crosses (VC) and has a living history that is second to none.

The Rifles are the British Army’s largest infantry regiment. Rifle Regiments were first created from the red coated Line Regiments that used the drum to communicate orders over short distances. The concept of the Rifleman, dressed in green uniform, armed with rifles rather than muskets, fighting on the battlefield on their own initiative, emerged from the forests of North America and Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s. A drummer was unable to communicate instructions across the wider distances and noise of battle. Instead, the bugle, with its clarion call, was selected for use by Riflemen. For that reason, The Rifles uniquely Sound Retreat, to its sentries as day moves to dusk, rather than Beat Retreat like the rest of the British Army.
