THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE WILL VISIT THE PASSAGE

London

Wednesday 13th February, 2019

The Duke of Cambridge will visit homelessness charity The Passage to join volunteers at their resource centre in a lunch shift, and to hear how integral volunteering and community support is for the organisation and their clients.

After helping to prepare and serve lunch, His Royal Highness will hear more about The Passage’s ‘Home for Good’ programme, which aims to reduce the incidence of former rough sleepers failing in their tenancies and becoming homeless again. Home for Good uses structured befriending and community support to reduce social isolation, build resilience and thereby prevent a return to the streets. The programme recognises that homelessness can be a traumatic experience for many people and The Passage ethos is to empower clients to move on from their homelessness by helping them to settle in their new home. Each Home for Good Volunteer uses their local knowledge and social skills to help the client they are matched with to put down roots and make connections in their community. Home for Good is the only project of its kind in London; it accepts referrals not only from The Passage’s other services, but from any organisation working with former rough sleepers. Volunteers come from all backgrounds and fields which encourages social mixing outside of the homeless community.

Established in 1980, The Passage provides resources which encourage, inspire and challenge homeless people to make lasting and long-term changes to their lives. The organisation runs the UK’s largest resource centre for homeless and insecurely housed people, outreach services, a number of homelessness prevention projects and three innovative accommodation services. Since its inception, The Passage has helped over 130,000 people in crisis.

Wednesday 13th February, 2019

On Wednesday 13th February The Duke of Sussex will attend a reception and take part in a Q&A session with England Rugby union co-captain Dylan Hartley, in aid of England Rugby’s Try for Change programme and the Jonny Wilkinson Foundation.

His Royal Highness will meet representatives from Try for Change at the reception as well as ex England international rugby players and World Cup winners Jonny Wilkinson, Lawrence Dallaglio and Jason Leonard. The Duke will also speak to England Rugby head coach Eddie Jones and the England Rugby union squad before taking part in a Q&A session with Dylan Hartley, discussing their passion for rugby and the impact Try for Change projects have been having.

As Patron of the Rugby Football Union (RFU), His Royal Highness is keen to support the organisation’s efforts to make rugby more inclusive across society, and in doing so, use the sport to help tackle a number of significant social challenges around educational and social inclusion, mental and physical wellbeing, unemployment and community cohesion.

Try for Change is an England Rugby programme that uses the power of rugby as a force for good to improve and support the lives of disadvantaged young people in England and across the world. Try for Change works with Sport Relief, a campaign of Comic Relief, to raise funds for projects that use rugby and its core values for positive change.

The Jonny Wilkinson Foundation encourages social participation within communities to tackle mental health concerns together, in order to inspire individuals, influence prejudice and promote awareness and understanding. The foundation provides practical help and support as well as supporting institutions that, through their work, enable individuals to face huge challenges without struggling alone.

The Duchess of Cambridge will attend The Royal Foundation’s ‘Mental Health in Education’ conference on Wednesday 13th February.

The conference will bring together delegates from across the mental health and education sectors to explore and discuss the benefits of collaborative working and what more can be done to tackle mental health issues in schools.

The event, hosted by broadcaster and presenter Kate Silverton, will see a full day of speakers, panel discussions and breakout sessions. Her Royal Highness will listen to a number of sessions, including one on the benefits of integrating mental health modules into teacher training courses, and another on the role of school leaders in creating a culture of wellbeing in schools.

During her visit, The Duchess of Cambridge will meet Head Teachers from a number of schools that are currently piloting The Royal Foundation’s ‘Mentally Healthy Schools’ programme. Launched by The Duchess of Cambridge in 2018, ‘Mentally Healthy Schools’ is a website giving primary schools free access to hundreds of the highest quality mental health resources, helping teachers better support their pupils’ mental health. It is one of the legacy programmes from the Heads Together campaign and is being delivered in partnership with The Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, Place2Be and Young Minds.

Her Royal Highness will then join a meeting with teachers and specialists from the sector to further discuss the potential impact of consistent mental health teacher training, as well as the challenges facing its implementation.

This event forms part of The Duchess’ continuing work at The Royal Foundation, where much of Her Royal Highness’s focus is on supporting and promoting the mental health of children and young people.

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE TO VISIT SCHOOLS IN SUPPORT OF CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH

London

Tuesday 5th February, 2019

The Duchess of Cambridge will undertake two school visits on 5th February to find out more about the support offered to students, teachers and parents to help with mental wellbeing.

Her Royal Highness will first visit Lavender Primary School in support of Place2Be’s Children’s Mental Health Week 2019. Place2Be, of which Her Royal Highness is Patron, is a leading UK children’s mental health charity providing in-school support and expert training to improve the emotional wellbeing of pupils, families, teachers and school staff. The charity works directly with more than 282 primary and secondary schools across England, Scotland and Wales.

One of The Duchess’s key areas of work is child mental health and the importance of support to provide young people with in-school mental health services at the earliest stage possible, to tackle problems before they can escalate.

Place2Be launched the first ever Children’s Mental Health Week in 2015 to shine a spotlight on the importance of children and young people’s mental health. The theme of this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week is ‘Healthy: Inside and Out’, focusing on the connection between physical and mental health.

During her visit The Duchess will meet teachers and students taking part in Children’s Mental Health Week activities and sit in on two different lessons focusing on the importance of physical and mental health. Her Royal Highness will also watch pupils taking part in the school’s Daily Mile challenge which teaches children about the importance of being active. Before departing The Duchess will join a group of parents talking about the challenges of putting in place good routines and habits around sleep, screen-time, healthy eating and exercise.

The Duchess will then visit Alperton Community School to meet the UK’s first winner of the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize, Andria Zafirakou, and find out more about the programmes the school runs to support both students and teachers with their mental wellbeing. Ms Zafirakou won the global prize in 2018 in recognition of her contribution to the school community.

On arrival The Duchess will join a roundtable discussion with teachers about students’ school readiness and teacher welfare. Her Royal Highness will then join students taking part in the Random Acts of Kindness Club, which is an extra-curricular club focussing on the wellbeing of the school community. Before departing The Duchess will drop in on an art class where she will hear how the school uses art to enhance children’s confidence and creativity.

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE WILL ATTEND 100 WOMEN IN FINANCE GALA DINNER IN SUPPORT OF ‘MENTALLY HEALTHY SCHOOLS’

V&A Museum, London

Wednesday 13th February, 2019

The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of 100 Women in Finance’s Philanthropic Initiatives, will attend a Gala Dinner in aid of ‘Mentally Healthy Schools’, at the V&A Museum on Wednesday 13th February. Her Royal Highness will attend a private reception before making a short speech ahead of the dinner.

Launched by The Duchess at the beginning of 2018, ‘Mentally Healthy Schools’ is one of the legacy programmes from the Heads Together campaign, which aims to help people of all ages start conversations about their mental health. The landmark project, run by The Royal Foundation, helps teachers and school leaders better support children’s mental wellbeing, by offering school staff reliable and practical resources through a website developed by the youth-focussed charity partners of Heads Together; the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, Place2Be and Young Minds.

For The Duchess, supporting young people was always at the heart of Heads Together, and is a key focus of Her Royal Highness’s work at The Royal Foundation.

100 Women in Finance (100WF) is a leading non-profit organisation for professionals in the alternative investments industry. 100WF’s Board of Directors selects a charitable organisation for its philanthropic initiatives from women’s and family health, mentoring and education programmes. Net proceeds from this year’s Gala Dinner will be given to The Royal Foundation’s Mentally Healthy Schools Programme.

The Duke, President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), and The Duchess will meet BAFTA representatives and watch the ceremony. The Duke will also present the Fellowship award. BAFTA is a world-leading independent arts charity that brings the very best work in film, games and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally. While BAFTA is well-known for celebrating excellence and championing creativity through its awards, it is a charity committed to identifying talented individuals, and making sure they receive the encouragement, professional support and advice that will enable them to succeed, regardless of their background or other circumstances.

The Fellowship, which The Duke will present, is awarded annually at the ceremony, and is the highest accolade bestowed by the Academy to an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television. The Duke has been President of the Academy since February 2010, and both His Royal Highness and The Duchess have supported BAFTA’s charitable activities by attending events across the charity’s learning programmes, including Young Game Designers and BAFTA Kids events, as well as others related to building cross-cultural collaborations with the creative industries in China.

A Speech by The Duke of Sussex at the Commonwealth Youth Roundtable

0

A speech by The Duke of Sussex at the Commonwealth Youth Roundtable, Lancaster House

Thank you Lord Ahmad.

And Thank you for the invite! It’s great to be here today with you all.

For those of you who don’t know, I took on the role of Commonwealth Youth Ambassador at CHOGM last year.

And, nearly 12 months into the job, I can honestly say I feel more passionate than ever about the huge opportunity we have here:

To empower young people across the Commonwealth, you who are here in this room today, and the millions around the world who are part of this global collective of change makers.

Some may say it’s our responsibility, but I see it as our privilege, to equip you with the tools and the platform you need – to continue your cause driven work at the highest level – driving positive and effective change.

What has struck me the most is that you’re changing behaviours every day by the way that you’re choosing to live, and therefore the example you are proudly setting.

You are rejecting old hierarchies, antiquated systems and biases; you are looking at the world with fresh eyes, and breaking rules and boundaries that no longer apply to enable a better future for everyone.

You are authentic in your passion for social change, you genuinely care about preserving the environment and you focus your lives on working within your communities for the betterment of those around you.

What you are doing day in and day out is nothing short of outstanding. And I applaud your tremendous efforts.

My wife and I spent the last few months travelling across the Commonwealth from Tonga and Australia to New Zealand and Fiji, and I recently visited Zambia at the beginning of December.

In all of these places, it’s been incredibly humbling to see how young people like yourselves are creating innovative and clever solutions to the diverse challenges you face – whether it be better mental health for everyone, eradicating extreme poverty and improving access to education for girls, or highlighting the very real effects and daily battles of climate change.

It’s clear to me that the 1.4 billion youth of the Commonwealth are the most valuable advocates.

The power of connected and informed young people is difficult to ignore.

However – it is our duty to make sure you have the tools and the support to rise above the red tape, the naysayers, the challenges you face – and to operate to the best of your ability, because when you come together – the whole world benefits.

As I have spoken to young people on my travels, one of the recurring themes is the lack of mental health support for those under 30 and the remaining stigma and absence of services available.

And while this may seem streamlined, and even niche to some, what I have come to understand so deeply is that all health is interconnected – our mental health, our planet’s health, the health of our communities. We do not survive, and certainly do not thrive without the acknowledgment and understanding that in addressing one problem, we are paradoxically solving another. That is the power you hold in your hands.

Lord Ahmad has spoken about the four themes of CHOGM – and if I may, I’d like to highlight the theme that, for me, makes all the others possible – and that is sustainability:

“Sustainable development is defined as the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. “

This echoes exactly what I was just saying – that it’s all interconnected. That WE are all interconnected. That in tackling the core issue, we solve a multitude of challenges. This applies to education, stigmatisation, and our greatest asset – the environment.

There is now, more than ever, a pressing urgency to saving the planet – the clock, as you all know, is ticking.

You are all already doing the work and it is our job to ensure that your views are being heard and acted upon, at the highest levels.

Not tokenistic where one could say “yes, yes we heard from the youth,” but to actually listen, process, and action policy change to reflect tangible needs and quantifiable results – from you.

You are working to secure your own futures – and those who hold the levers of change are starting to recognise the enormous, relatively untapped value in what you are doing.

This year, as we mark the 70th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth, and with the theme: ‘A Connected Commonwealth’, there is a great opportunity to harness the talent, energy and intellect of young people as an overwhelming force for good.

As someone who is about to become a father, I am acutely aware of our shared responsibility to make this world more resilient and its inhabitants more accountable for the next generation.

The only way to see real progress is not by chance, it’s by change.

Let’s get to work.

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE TO VISIT DUNDEE

Dundee, Scotland

Tuesday 29th January, 2019

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will travel to Dundee to officially open V&A Dundee and greet members of the public on the waterfront. They will then meet with workers from the Dundee Michelin factory and join a meeting of the Michelin Action Group that is working to repurpose the site and ensure new employment opportunities for the local area.

The day will start with The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge officially opening Scotland’s first design museum, V&A Dundee. The establishment of the museum was made possible because of the unique collaboration between V&A, the University of Dundee, Abertay University, Dundee City Council, the UK and Scottish governments, the National Lottery and Scottish Enterprise. The Museum, which is at the heart of a £1 billion waterfront regeneration plan, is already bringing significant economic and social benefits to the local area, helping to reshape the city’s future as a hub for the creative industries.

The Duchess of Cambridge will make a short speech celebrating the addition of this major new cultural centre for Scotland and the UK, in her role as Patron of V&A. The visit will build on Her Royal Highness’s keen interest in promoting the visual arts, and highlighting the value that public institutions like V&A Dundee can offer local communities, particularly in terms of increased accessibility to world-class art and design.

The Duke and Duchess will then travel to meet with employees and their families from the Dundee Michelin factory, to hear first-hand how the factory’s planned closure is affecting them. Following these discussions, Their Royal Highnesses will attend the Michelin Action Group, which is aiming to find and take forward solutions for repurposing the plant and providing a sustainable future for its skilled workforce.

The Duke will give short remarks at the start of the meeting, thanking the action group for its dedicated work to date. He will also highlight what has already been achieved elsewhere in the city thanks to different communities working as a collective. The action group meets regularly and includes representatives from the local council, the Scottish and UK Governments, Union officials, Scottish Enterprise and Michelin.
