THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE WILL ATTEND THE LAUNCH OF THE NATIONAL EMERGENCIES TRUST

St Martin-in-the-Fields, London

Thursday 7th November 2019

The Duke of Cambridge will attend the launch of the National Emergencies Trust at St Martin-in-the-Fields on Thursday 7th November.

The National Emergencies Trust (NET) is an independent charity which will provide an emergency response to disasters in the UK. The NET was created as a result of discussions held within the charitable sector about how to effectively respond to national emergencies following recent devastating tragedies, including the Grenfell Tower fire, and the terrorist attacks in London and Manchester in 2017.

The trust will work collaboratively with charities and other bodies to direct public donations to NET appeals, and to distribute funds fairly and efficiently at the time of a national emergency. The concept of a collaborative approach to public emergency response has been proven by the Disasters Emergency Committee, which has been responding to overseas disasters for more than 50 years, and will be applied by the NET to domestic emergencies.

Upon arrival, His Royal Highness will meet a small group of people affected by previous disasters, including the Grenfell Tower fire and the Westminster Bridge terrorist attack. In 2017, Her Majesty The Queen and the Duke visited families and first responders following the fire at Grenfell Tower. His Royal Highness also joined the crew of DIY SOS in 2018 on a major project to support those affected by the fire.

During the launch event, the Duke will make a short speech before meeting representatives from the emergency services, NGOs, and some of the NET’s charitable partners.

THE QUEEN WILL GIVE A RECEPTION AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO CELEBRATE THE WORK OF THE QUEEN ELIZABETH DIAMOND JUBILEE TRUST

Tuesday, 29th October 2019

Her Majesty The Queen will give a reception at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the work of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust on Tuesday, 29th October 2019.

Established as a time-limited charitable foundation by Commonwealth Heads of Government in 2012, the trust’s mission has been to curb avoidable blindness and empower a new generation of young leaders – The Queen’s Young Leaders.

Working to a five-year timeframe, these programmes have helped to enrich the lives of people across the Commonwealth. The trust will close as planned in 2020, with its mission living on in those it has supported, and those it has equipped to continue changing lives going forward.

Her Majesty will be joined for the reception by Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex, vice-patron of the trust.

The evening will bring together staff, supporters, partners and beneficiaries – including frontline ophthalmologists and eye health professionals from across the Commonwealth – to celebrate the trust’s achievements. The Countess of Wessex will give a speech at the reception, reflecting on the trust’s work.

Since 2014, the trust has helped more than 22 million people in Africa and the Pacific receive vital antibiotics to combat trachoma – the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness – and supported Malawi and Vanuatu in removing the risk of the disease. Both are on track to be certified as having eliminated trachoma by the World Health Organisation.

The trust has also provided sight-saving surgery to over 104,000 people suffering with trachoma trichiasis; ensured almost 19,200 people have received treatment to prevent the loss of sight due to diabetes; and established services to screen and treat premature babies at risk of Retinopathy of Prematurity – the leading cause of childhood blindness – across four districts in India, serving a population of nearly 50 million.

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE WILL ATTEND THE LONDON’S AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY GALA

Rosewood Hotel, London WC2

Thursday 7th November, 2019

The Duke of Cambridge, Patron of London’s Air Ambulance Charity’s 30th Anniversary Campaign, will attend the London’s Air Ambulance Charity gala on Thursday 7th November.

London’s Air Ambulance Charity, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London 365 days a year. Prior to the establishment of the charity in 1989, many seriously injured patients lost their lives unnecessarily because of the delay in receiving prompt and appropriate medical care.

Since its inception, London’s Air Ambulance has provided rapid response and cutting-edge medical care, bringing the hospital emergency department to the scene of an incident, and delivering life-saving treatment to the 10 million people who live and work in London.

In January 2019, His Royal Highness became patron of London’s Air Ambulance Charity’s 30th anniversary campaign ‘Thirty Years Saving Lives’. The campaign was launched to highlight the charity’s vital work in delivering life-saving treatment across London, and raise support for the development of new facilities.

The Duke, who previously worked as an air ambulance pilot for the East Anglia Air Ambulance, will meet with crew members, former patients and supporters before delivering a short speech.

Jonathan Jenkins, CEO of London’s Air Ambulance Charity said;

“The Charity is honoured to welcome The Duke of Cambridge to our Gala Dinner as we mark this very special milestone in 2019.  The Duke’s heartfelt support for our Charity this year has been greatly appreciated by our operational crews, charity staff and all our supporters.

The Gala is the culmination of our Anniversary year, and we are humbled by the help we have received from supporters as we aim to make this our most successful Gala. Not only will it help us to ensure that we can continue to be there for our patients, but the event will allow us to reflect on the extraordinary efforts of everyone involved in our work over the last three decades.”

The 30 Years Saving Lives campaign was launched by The Duke of Cambridge on 9 January 2019 and aims to highlight the charity’s vital work delivering lifesaving treatment across London and raise support for the development of new facilities.  The campaign has already successfully raised almost £2million towards the development of new facilities and resulted in a significant boost in awareness of the work of the life-saving charity.

Prior to the establishment of the charity in 1989, many seriously injured patients lost their lives unnecessarily because of the delay in receiving prompt and appropriate medical care. Since its inception, London’s Air Ambulance has brought the hospital emergency department to the scene of incidents across London, providing vital treatment to the 10 million people who live and work in the city.   It was founded in 1989 and to date has treated over 40,000 patients and attended most major incidents in London.  London’s Air Ambulance is a charity that operates in partnership with Barts Health NHS Trust and London Ambulance Service.

London’s Air Ambulance Charity Gala Dinner will take place on 7 November at a central London location. The Duke will meet with medical and operational crew, former patients and supporters of the charity and deliver a speech in support of the critical life-saving work the charity delivers every second of every day in the capital.

The Gala will be hosted by presenter Natalie Pinkham.

Companies who have helped to support the event include international contemporary and modern art galleries Maddox Gallery, leading provider of asset servicing solutions to the global alternative investment industry Citco Group of Companies and long standing charity partner life and pensions consolidator Phoenix Group.

Louise Robertshaw, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at London’s Air Ambulance Charity said

“Maddox Gallery, Citco Group of Companies and Phoenix Group have provided generous support to ensure the 30th Anniversary Gala will be the charity’s most successful and memorable event in its history. We are extremely grateful to them for their belief in our vital cause which will have such a great impact on the work we do every day to save lives.”

Event partners are William Grant & Sons, Mount Street Printers, and Château Marjosse.

THE DUCHESS OF CORNWALL WILL ATTEND A COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE AT ST BRIDE’S CHURCH

TUESDAY 29TH OCTOBER 2019

The Duchess of Cornwall, Patron, the Guild of St Bride, will attend a service to commemorate journalists, camera-crew and support staff who have lost their lives on the frontline.

St Bride’s Church is located on Fleet Street and considered by many to be the spiritual home for journalists throughout the world. The church contains the Journalists’ Altar, commemorating those who lost their lives reporting the news.

The church hosts an annual service commemorating journalists, camera-crew and support staff who have lost their lives on the frontline. This year the service is entitled “Bearing Witness” and serves to remind us that there are many journalists who are missing or held captive, and many who continue to report at great risk.

An Address will be given by Photographer and Filmmaker, Paul Conroy, and Readings will be given by other senior figures across the media industry. The Service will be led by Canon Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride’s and attendees are expected to include the families of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the Maltese investigative journalist murdered in 2017 and Christopher Allen, a British-American journalist murdered in South Sudan in 2017.

Her Royal Highness became Patron of the Guild of St Bride in 2012 and has attended the service three times before, in 2017, 2012 and 2010.

Following the service Her Royal Highness will meet families of those who have lost their lives before attending a reception at The Humble Grape.

St Bride’s Church

St Bride’s is the church of the media and the press. To enter its doors is to step into 2,000 years of history, which had begun with the Romans some six centuries before the name of St Bride, daughter of an Irish prince, even emerged from legend to become associated forever with the site.

The story of St Bride’s is inextricably woven into the history of the City of London. By the time the Great Fire of 1666 left the church in ruins, a succession of churches had existed on the site for about a millennium, and the area had already assumed its unique role in the emergence of English printing. It took nine years for St Bride’s to re-appear from the ashes under the inspired direction of Christopher Wren, but for the next two-and-a-half centuries it was in the shadow of the church’s unmistakeable wedding-cake spire that the rise of the British newspaper industry into the immensely-powerful Fourth Estate took place.

Then, in 1940, St Bride’s fell victim once again to flames as German incendiary bombs reduced Wren’s architectural jewel to a roofless shell. This time 17 years elapsed before rebuilding was completed, although a series of important excavations in 1953 amid the skeletal ruins, led by the medieval archaeologist Professor W. F. Grimes, came up with extraordinary results, uncovering the foundations of all six previous churches on the site.

THE DUCHESS OF CORNWALL WILL CARRY OUT ENGAGEMENTS IN EAST LONDON

Wednesday 30th October 2019

Engagement 1

The Duchess of Cornwall will visit Mulberry School for Girls. The school plays an important part in the Women of the World (WOW) Festival of which HRH is President. Exploring the theme ‘Partnership of Equals’, The Duchess will tour the school, participate in a roundtable discussion and meet the school’s therapy dog.

The first part of the tour will include a WOW themed marketplace hosted in the school’s library. The stalls will showcase the school’s work and relationship with WOW and include a specific focus on Community Learning, Partnership of Equals and The Mulberry Schools Foundation.

Her Royal Highness will then visit English lessons and the dance studio where a performance of Swan Lake in which the gender roles are reversed will be rehearsed. The Duchess will watch a performance by Mulberry Theatre Company (inspired by Donmar’s all-female Shakespeare trilogy) which was written and performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival earlier this year before joining a round-table discussion on issues raised during the play.

The Duchess will view works in the Mulberry Art Gallery before joining students in the courtyard where they will sing a Scottish folk song, ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ around the Mulberry Tree from which the School takes its name.

Finally, The Duchess will meet the school’s therapy dog before departing.

Mulberry School for Girls

The Duchess last visited Mulberry School for Girls in February 2013.

Mulberry School for Girls pioneers high quality education for girls and women locally, nationally and globally. The keystone of this work is developing confidence, creativity, leadership and the love of learning in Mulberry girls. Mulberry has also reached out to families – in particular, mothers – in this work, offering rich opportunities to do the same for them. (Mothers are joining the movement, writing and performing their own drama, setting up their own NGOs and insisting on their voices being heard.) The way to break cycles of poverty and worklessness is to provide through education opportunities to gain excellent qualifications, to break down barriers created through social stereotyping and prejudice, and to open up as many possibilities to build confidence as we can.

The quality of education offered at Mulberry placed the school in the top 130 selective and non-selective schools in 2018 for progress and 94% of pupils study the EBacc (The English Baccalaureate) with arts (known as Mulbacc). The arts have been a significant force in the school’s work to deliver this quality, which is why an arts GCSE is compulsory alongside the EBacc. In addition, the enriched extra-curricular education programme is designed to promote the voice and visibility of Mulberry girls and the women of the school community.

Women of the World (WOW) Festival

The Duchess of Cornwall is President of the Women of the World (WOW) Festival. Head Teacher of Mulberry School for Girls, Vanessa Ogden is a Trustee of the WOW Foundation.

WOW festivals began in the UK in 2010 and were launched by Jude Kelly at Southbank Centre London, where she was Artistic Director. They celebrate women and girls, taking a frank look at what prevents them from achieving their potential, raising awareness globally of the issues they face and discussing solutions together.

To date, WOW has reached over two million people in 17 countries on five continents across over 65 festivals – and growing – including in Australia, Brazil, China, Finland, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Somaliland, the UK and the USA. In 2018 WOW took place in Rio, Karachi, Beijing, Cardiff and Bradford, as well as London, New York, Dhaka, Pakistan Atlanta, Istanbul and China in 2019 and 2020.

Over the last nine years the Festivals have developed a reputation as a space for world renowned artists, activists, thinkers and performers including Angela Davies, Malala Yousafzai, Annie Lennox, Patrick Stewart, Baroness Doreen Lawrence and Salma Hayek, to come and participate, alongside thousands of women and girls who don’t have public profiles but are doing amazing things. WOW provides platforms for people of all kinds, changes attitudes, brings communities together and provides a unique space for people to work together towards gender equality in their own communities. One example of the impact the festival came in 2015, with the founding of the Women’s Equality Party by Sandi Toksvig and Catherine Mayer.

Mulberry School for Girls has had a deep and enduring partnership with Jude Kelly, the Women of the World Festival and now with its Foundation. Participating extensively in the first WOW festival, many of the girls were placed on panels at Jude’s invitation giving them voice and visibility in the debate about gender equality and how to achieve it. They walked with Jude, Bianca Jagger, Helena Kennedy and others in the first Women’s March, releasing doves on the bridge and speaking powerfully at the plenary afterwards.

Working with Jude, the school continues to contribute to WOW and has led the education conferences in the past as well as being involved extensively in WOW’s celebration of International Day of the Girl 2019.

ENGAGEMENT 2

The Prince of Wales visits HMS Enterprise at Harumi Pier

On arrival at Harumi Pier, His Royal Highness will be greeted at the gangplank by the ship’s captain, Royal Navy Commander Cecil Ladislaus, and the British Defence Attaché to Japan, Captain Simon Staley. After meeting the Japanese Minister for Defence, Taro Kono, on the ship’s bridge, His Royal Highness will meet HMS Enterprise’s crew. On the ship, His Royal Highness will also meet a group of people who are at the forefront of responding to the challenges of plastics in the ocean and climate change, including senior figures from the Japan Climate Leaders Partnership. His Royal Highness will see a range of plastic alternatives for consumers, commercial and industrial users and will speak with scientists working internationally to understand the scale of the problem and explore potential answers. Reducing marine pollution, including micro-plastics, and preserving biodiversity have been major themes of Japan’s G20 Presidency. The Japan Climate Leaders Partnership (JCLP) has committed to phasing out coal and pushed for a more ambitious long-term climate strategy for Japan. HRH launched the group on his last visit to Japan some 10 years ago. Since their launch JCLP has grown to include over 100 member companies. This year JCLP was awarded the Foreign Minister of Japan’s commendation.

Since the UK-Japan Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation was announced in August 2017, four HMS came to Japan to strengthen the UK and Japan’s cooperation in security.

In January 2019, during PM Abe’s visit to London, the UK and Japan reaffirmed the Joint Declarations on Security Cooperation to promote the rules-based international system and to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

HMS Enterprise is the fifth HMS coming to Japan after August 2017, and is an Echo-class multi-role survey vessel – hydrographic oceanographic (SVHO) launched in 2002 with 50 personnel on board. The Taitokuinden Mausoleum was the grave of the second Tokugawa Shogun, built in 1632. The building became a pattern for all subsequent mausoleum architecture. The building was registered as a nationally important cultural property in 1930. Prior to this a large miniature model of the main two halls of the Taitokuinden was commissioned by the city of Tokyo for the 1910 Japan–British Exhibition in London. The model was given as a gift to King George V and was later displayed at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew. The original Taitokuinden Mausoleum was destroyed during World War II by wartime bombing of Tokyo in 1945. In 2014, the miniature model was restored and returned to Japan on long-term loan from The Royal Collection and is displayed in a special exhibition at the Zojoji temple.

The Prince of Wales visits Mitsukoshi Department Store

As part of the GREAT campaign, His Royal Highness will visit the Fortnum and Mason café, where there will be a showcase of British food and drink including a display of Highgrove products and will greet senior members of six distributors of British brands.

The Food is GREAT campaign was launched in April 2019. This event forms part of a series of activity British Embassy Tokyo has been running throughout the Rugby World Cup 2019 Tournament in Japan.

Current UK exports to Japan of alcoholic drinks are worth £101.4m, but over 80% (£82m) of this is in Scotch Whisky. However, Gin, English Sparkling Wine and beer imports from the UK are growing. UK gins were ranked number one in value terms in 2017 and comprise over 80% of Japan’s total imported gins.

While not the focus of this event, the ban on British Beef and Lamb was lifted in January 2019 and initial interest from Japanese industry has shown a strong interest in UK lamb. The first import of Welsh Lamb on a commercial basis arrived in Japan in September. This is a huge milestone for the Food is GREAT campaign. In November 2019, the seven Prince hotels in Tokyo will offer Welsh Lamb and British Beef to Japanese consumers for one month as part of their British Fair.
