Charles II: Art & Power Exhibition

0

After over a decade of austere Cromwellian rule, the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 led to a resurgence of the arts in England.  The court of Charles II became the centre for the patronage of leading artists and the collecting of great works of art, which served not only as decoration for the royal apartments but also as a means of glorifying the restored monarchy and reinforcing the position of Charles II as the rightful king.

From John Michael Wright’s monumental portrait of Charles II in his coronation robes and a glittering silver-gilt plate which adorned the high-altar of Westminster Abbey during the King’s coronation, to old master paintings, tapestries and spectacular silver-gilt furniture, the exhibition shows the rich material world of Charles II’s court and the role of the arts in the re-establishment of the Stuart monarchy.

New portrait of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh

A new portrait of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, painted in the year of his retirement from public engagements, has been released today.

The portrait, by Australian born artist Ralph Heimans, has been produced for display at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark. The Museum is holding a retrospective exhibition of Mr Heimans’ work in 2018, part of which aims to explore the historical and cultural connections between the Royal Families of Great Britain and Denmark.

Born a Prince of Denmark, His Royal Highness’ ancestry spans both the British and the Danish Royal Families. Prince Philip is connected to Denmark through his Grandfather, George I (of Greece) who was originally a Danish Prince born in Copenhagen. His Great Grandfather, Christian IX, was King of Denmark from 1863 to 1906.

Set in The Grand Corridor at Windsor Castle, The Duke of Edinburgh is depicted wearing the sash of the Order of the Elephant, Denmark’s highest-ranking honour.

Windsor Castle holds special significance in regard to The Duke of Edinburgh’s ancestry. At the end of the Grand Corridor is the Tapestry Room where His Royal Highness’ mother, Princess Alice, and maternal grandmother, Princess Victoria were born. Their Royal Highnesses both of whom also appear in the painting that hangs on the right side of the Grand Corridor, in the company of Queen Victoria.

PRINCE HARRY WILL ATTEND THE SOVEREIGN’S PARADE AT THE ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY SANDHURST

Sandhurst Military Academy

Friday 15th December, 2017

Prince Harry will represent Her Majesty The Queen as the Reviewing Officer at the Sovereign’s Parade on Friday 15th December. His Royal Highness will inspect the Parade and present awards including the Sword of Honour, the Overseas Sword and The Queen’s Medal.

Prior to the inspection, Prince Harry will attend the commissioning service in the Royal Memorial Chapel.

The Sovereign’s Parade at the end of each term marks the passing out from Sandhurst of Officer Cadets who have completed the Commissioning Course. The Parade will mark the completion of a year’s intensive training for 162 officer cadets from the UK and 25 from 20 overseas countries.

Until WW2 the passing out of the parade at the Royal Military College was known as ‘Inspection Day’, later changed to ‘Dukes day’ after The Duke of Cambridge, Commander in Chief of the Army and who carried out the ‘inspection’. The first Commissioning parade of the new Royal Military Academy Sandhurst was held in July 1948 in the presence of His Majesty King George VI, who decreed henceforth that the Parade was to be known as The Sovereign’s Parade.

The original Royal Military Academy (RMA) was established at Woolwich for the training of Artillery and Engineer officers in 1741. Cavalry and Infantry officers were trained at the Royal Military College (RMC), which was founded in 1802 and moved to Sandhurst in 1812. The RMA and RMC merged after WW2 and formed the current establishment – the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS).

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE JOINS FAMILIES AT COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PARTY

Rugby Portobello Trust, Kensington, London

Tuesday 12th December, 2017

The Duchess of Cambridge will join children and families to celebrate the work of the Rugby Portobello Trust at its community centre in North Kensington. Her Royal Highness will also learn more about the centre’s range of support services for young people, families and the local community.

The Rugby Portobello Trust in North Kensington is part of a network of centres that help local communities, and provides support by running programmes for children and parents such as homework clubs, sporting activities, social groups and tuition.

The Trust and the centre staff in Kensington have also been pivotal in supporting people affected by the Grenfell Tower fire. The Trust established a New Homes Team to provide practical support to residents in relation to their new accommodation, and has played an important role in helping them access grants that became available, both through the local authority and from private donations.

During the visit The Duchess will join the Christmas party for the ‘Magic Mums’ group which supports mothers, babies and toddlers. Her Royal Highness will meet young people taking part in a music workshop, and will also help staff and volunteers set up for their children’s Christmas party later in the day.
