THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE AND PRINCE HARRY WILL ATTEND THE EUROPEAN PREMIERE OF STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry will attend The European Premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, at the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday, December 12. The premiere is hosted in aid of The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

The Royal Foundation has invited more than 400 young people, military veterans and volunteers who have taken part in its programmes to join Their Royal Highnesses at the premiere. There will be representatives from Coach Core, Full Effect, and military programmes such as the Endeavour Fund. The premiere will be an opportunity to recognise and celebrate people who have worked so hard to change their lives and the lives of others.

On behalf of The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, The Royal Foundation has also invited some of the families who were affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy, alongside representatives of the local fire services and the charities and organisations who are now helping them recover and try to rebuild their lives. Before the performance, Their Royal Highnesses will meet a selection of beneficiaries from The Royal Foundation and also some of the families and representatives of organisations working with those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire. Their Royal Highnesses will then meet members of the film’s cast and crew, along with senior executives from Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of the UK’s biggest film of all time, The Force Awakens, join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past. The film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman. J.J. Abrams, Tom Karnowski and Jason McGatlin are the executive producers. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in U.K. cinemas on December 14, 2017.

THE DUKE OF YORK APPOINTED AS COLONEL OF THE GRENADIER GUARDS

The Queen has been pleased to give her formal approval to the appointment of His Royal Highness The Duke of York as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards.

HRH The Duke of York will take over the appointment from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh has been Colonel of the Grenadier Guards since 1975.

The Grenadier Guards who were formed in Flanders in 1656 by King Charles II as His “Royal Regiment of Foot Guards”, has fought in almost every major campaign of the British Army. They later became known as the First Regiment of Foot Guards, and now bear the title The First or Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards in honour of their defeat of the Grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The bearskin caps seen on ceremonial duty are worn in recognition of that victory.

The Grenadier Guards boast 78 Battle Honours having served with distinction in campaigns throughout British history, particularly in the Napoleonic, Crimean, Boer, First and Second World Wars, winning a total of 14 Victoria Crosses and one George Cross. In the 21st Century they continue to serve their country with distinction and were one of the final units involved in ground combat in Afghanistan. A formidable force of hard and soft power the British Army’s Grenadier Guards are admired and recognised around the world.

Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, will attend the Commissioning Ceremony of HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH

HM Naval Base, Portsmouth

Her Majesty The Queen will arrive by train at Portsmouth Harbour Station and be greeted by the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire (Mr. Nigel Atkinson) who will present the Hon. Mrs Mary Montagu-Scott (High Sheriff of Hampshire), Councillor Ken Ellcome (Lord Mayor of Portsmouth), the Lady Mayoress, the Leader of Portsmouth City Council (Councillor Donna Jones) and Mrs Oliva Pinkney (Chief Constable, Hampshire Police).

After travelling by car to HMNB Portsmouth, The Queen will be met by Commodore Jerry Kyd (Captain HMS Queen Elizabeth) and The Princess Royal (Commodore-in-Chief, HMNB Portsmouth). The Princess Royal will have arrived in Portsmouth earlier in the day, and have met a number of serving personnel in the ship, prior to the arrival of Her Majesty.

The Royal and Naval Party will proceed on board HMS Queen Elizabeth to the Hangar Deck, where approximately 3,700 invited guests, including Ship’s Company, their families and others, will be present. The Queen will be met by Admiral Sir Philip Jones (First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff) on the Hangar Deck.

After proceeding onto a Dias, there will be a Royal Salute and National Anthem (by the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines). The Queen, accompanied by the Captain and Lieutenant Commander Anthony Leeson (Officer of the Guard), will be invited to inspect the front rank of the Royal Guard, whilst The Princess Royal will be invited to inspect the rear rank accompanied by Commander Darren Houston (Commander of the Ship) and Lieutenant Jason Rogers (Second Officer of the Guard). The two ranks of the Royal Guard is made up of 96 members of the Ship’s Company.

Once the Inspection is over, The Royal Party will return to the Dias and the Commissioning Service commences with the Captain reading the Commissioning Warrant, at which point, the White Ensign is raised (on the upper deck, though a video link into the hangar will enable all those there to witness this moment).

The Service thereafter is led by The Reverend Ian Wheatley, Chaplain of the Fleet.

Her Majesty will then make an Address.

The Captain will then reply to Her Majesty and following the traditions of the Senior Service, the commissioning cake will be cut by the Captain’s wife and the youngest member of the Ship’s Company.

A ‘Cheer Ship’ (three cheers for Her Majesty) will signal the end of the formal Commissioning Ceremony.

Shortly after, The Queen and The Princess Royal will meet guests in the Hangar Deck, including members of the Ship’s Company and their families. The Royal Party will the join the First Sea Lord, the Captain and members of the Ship’s Company at a private lunch on board.

Following this, The Queen and The Princes Royal will sign the Visitors’ Book and be presented with flowers. Her Royal Highness will take leave of Her Majesty, who will then depart HMS Queen Elizabeth and the Naval Base by car.

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE TO ATTEND THE CHILDREN’S GLOBAL MEDIA SUMMIT

MANCHESTER

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend the Children’s Global Media Summit at the Manchester Central Convention Complex. The Duke of Cambridge will give the key note speech at the summit, which brings together creatives, technology innovators, policymakers, executives and thought leaders from around the globe to inform and redesign the future of media for this generation and explore the impact that digital technology will have in children’s futures.

On arrival at the Manchester Central Convention Complex, The Duke and Duchess will have the chance to meet some of the international delegates who will speak at the conference. The Duchess will then join a forum hosted by Sesame Street’s Workshop, the charitable foundation of the famous children’s TV show, on research commissioned into kindness – a method used to help very young children express issues of emotional wellbeing.

The Duke will attend a short private meeting related to the Cyber Bullying Taskforce, to continue efforts to find a universal tool for children to report bullying when they see it or experience it. The Duke will then give a key note speech at the conference, before The BBC unveils details of the Own It project, one of the key outcomes of The Royal Foundation Cyber Bullying Taskforce. The Taskforce was convened through The Royal Foundation to bring together social media platforms and internet service providers with those organisations and individuals who strive to protect and support children and young people. Last month, The Duke of Cambridge unveiled a plan of action to protect children and encourage a new standard of behaviour online.

Immediately before their arrival at the Summit, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will take the opportunity to speak to local school children taking part in a “Stepping Out” session. The session is a focus group where young people are able to give Children’s television editorial staff and content producers their view of how they respond to new programmes under production.

PRINCE HARRY WILL ATTEND THE LONDON FIRE BRIGADE CAROL SERVICE

Westminster Cathedral

Monday 4th December, 2017

Prince Harry will attend the London Fire Brigade Carol Service at Westminster Cathedral on Monday 4th December.

This annual service is a popular event with festive readings and traditional Christmas carols for London Fire Brigade’s uniformed and non-uniformed members of staff and their families. The event is also attended by former colleagues who have retired from the Brigade.

On his arrival, His Royal Highness will be met by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater London as well as Canon Tuckwell and London Fire Brigade Commissioner Dany Cotton.

Prince Harry will then watch the service before meeting some of the London Fire Brigade’s frontline staff, firefighters and cadets.

Duchess of Cambridge Celebrates Ten Years of School Gardening

The Duchess of Cambridge visited green fingered youngsters at Robin Hood Primary School in Kingston Vale to celebrate ten years of the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Campaign for School Gardening.

Her Royal Highness got straight to work with some of the school’s 5-11 year old pupils; helping to plant spring-flowering bulbs – including daffodils and snake’s head fritillaries – and build bug hotels for garden insects in the shadow of the school’s existing ‘Buggingham Palace’.

During the visit, The Duchess received a briefing on the RHS nation-wide campaign and heard from the keen young gardeners about what they enjoy most about learning in a garden setting and from teachers about its impact. A recent survey of those taking part in the RHS campaign found that four in five have used gardening to improve young people’s health and wellbeing.¹

Robin Hood Primary School is one of over 34,000 schools and youth groups now signed up to the RHS campaign which calls for all children to be given the chance to garden.

With support from the RHS, the school has developed a progressive outdoor learning curriculum where pupils have access to a range of outdoor classrooms in a woodland setting. These give children the opportunity to explore the natural environment and take part in challenging yet achievable activities that bring learning to life.

Ruth Evans, Director of Education said: “We’re tremendously honoured that the Duchess of Cambridge has taken the time to see first-hand the huge and positive impact that gardening can have on children’s educational attainment and health and wellbeing. Through our RHS Campaign for School Gardening we have a growing army of school children already helping to protect and nurture our invaluable green spaces in towns and cities and lend a helping hand to important and varied wildlife.”

Pete Boulton, Headteacher at Robin Hood Primary & Nursery School, said: “Gardening and outdoor learning has become an essential part of the curriculum.  The development of a creative and engaging outdoor learning environment has enhanced our thematic classroom based learning and committed staff and enthusiastic children have benefitted from the invaluable skills of collaboration and teamwork.

“Our outdoor learning approach and gardening opportunities support children’s development, enabling them to develop their confidence and resilience in a sociable and stimulating environment.  We’re delighted that The Duchess has given our garden and its keen gardeners her royal seal of approval and we now look forward to welcoming the inhabitants of our newly built bug house and spring bulb colour.”

Schools and youth groups can sign-up to receive free resources and support from the RHS Campaign for School Gardening. Useful tools include seeds, plant labels, stickers and posters, as well as ideas for practical activities and lesson plans to help make the most of a school garden.

PRINCE HARRY AND MS. MARKLE TO VISIT NOTTINGHAM

NOTTINGHAM

Friday 1st December

Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will visit Nottingham on Friday 1st December for two separate engagements on subjects that His Royal Highness is passionate about raising awareness of – HIV/AIDS and youth crime.

Prince Harry has spent a significant amount of private and public time in the city and His Royal Highness is looking forward to introducing Ms. Markle to a community that has become very special to him.

Together they will first visit the Nottingham Contemporary which will be hosting a Terrence Higgins Trust World AIDS Day charity fair. On arrival at the venue, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will have the opportunity to meet gathered members of the local community outside the National Justice Museum. They will then meet representatives from Terrence Higgins Trust Nottingham, the African Institute for Social Development and Champions for Change, who each support local communities in Nottingham and do specific work around HIV/AIDS. They will also meet representatives from The Food Chain and BHIVA, which support people living with HIV and work towards eradicating the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.

Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will then travel on to Nottingham Academy where they will meet Head teachers from the Academy and local primary schools as well Full Effect staff and mentors. Full Effect is a programme that has been supported by The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry since 2013. The programme supports children and young people in the St Ann’s area of Nottingham from becoming involved in youth violence and crime through a combination of early intervention, mentorship, and training.

During their visit to the Academy, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will hear first-hand from staff about the positive impact Full Effect is having on the local school communities and student. His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle will then have the opportunity to meet some of the children benefitting from the programme’s Friday Night Youth Club which began in September. Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will also catch up with Chantelle Stefanovic, who recently spoke about the issues facing children and young people in St. Ann’s at the inaugural summit of the Obama Foundation in Chicago, as well as meet some of the young women she mentors. Before departing, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will watch a performance put on by some of the young people involved in the Full Effect programme.
