PRINCE HARRY WILL ATTEND 100 WOMEN IN
FINANCE GALA DINNER IN AID OF WELLCHILD

Victoria and Albert Museum, London

Wednesday 11th October, 2017

Prince Harry, Patron of 100 Women in Finance’s Philanthropic Initiatives, will attend a reception and gala dinner in aid of WellChild at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) on Wednesday 11th October. HRH will meet a number of guests, including parents of a young person helped by WellChild, at the reception, before attending a dinner at which he will make a short speech.

100 Women in Finance (100WF) is a leading non-profit organisation for professionals in the alternative investments industry. 100 WF’s Board of Directors selects a charitable organisation for its philanthropic initiative from women’s and family health, mentoring and education programmes. Net proceeds from this year’s Gala Dinner will be given to WellChild, of which The Prince is Patron.

WellChild is the national charity for seriously ill children and their families. Thousands of children and young people are living across the UK with serious or exceptional health needs. Many spend months, even years in hospital simply because there is no support enabling them to leave.

Through a nationwide network of children’s nurses, home and garden projects and family support services, WellChild helps get children and young people home from hospital quicker, supporting and empowering families to care for them safely at home. WellChild aims to give these children the best chance to thrive: safe at home, together with their families.

The Duke of Cambridge will attend the New Zealand National Commemoration for the Battle of Passchendaele

Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium

Thursday 12th October, 2017

The Duke of Cambridge, representing Her Majesty The Queen, will attend the New Zealand Commemoration for the Battle of Passchendaele on Thursday 12th October. His Royal Highness is taking part at the invitation of the government of New Zealand, which has organised the event. The Commemoration marks the centenary of what became known as the ‘darkest day’ of World War I for the New Zealand Division which, on 12th October 1917, suffered heavy losses during the Third Battle of Ypres.

On arrival at Tyne Cot Cemetery in Flanders, The Duke will be welcomed by representatives of the New Zealand government and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which has responsibility for the Cemetery. There will also be a ceremonial welcome from the Māori Cultural Group of the New Zealand Defence Force.

His Royal Highness will then attend the National Commemoration Service, during which he will give an address on behalf of The Queen and lay a wreath at the New Zealand Memorial Wall to the Missing. After the service, The Duke will take part in the unveiling of a Centenary Plinth to mark the occasion. At the Tyne Cot Visitors Centre, he will meet New Zealand youth ambassadors and the historian, Dr. Ian McGibbon, who will provide a military overview of the Third Battle of Ypres. The visit will conclude with a lunch reception. Invited guests will include Willie Apiata VC, New Zealand’s only living Victoria Cross recipient, and members of the 90-strong New Zealand Defence Force Contingent in Belgium for the Commemoration, alongside local and national representatives.

During the course of the First World War, almost 100,000 New Zealanders – close to 10% of the country’s then population – served overseas in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF). More than 2200 Māori and around 500 Pacific Islanders served overseas with the New Zealand forces. Additionally, 550 nurses served overseas with the New Zealand Army Nursing Service, while others enlisted in the United Kingdom.

The Great War would claim the lives of 18,000 New Zealanders and lead to the wounding of 41,000. 2779 died at Gallipoli and more than 12,000 on the Western Front. The names of those who died are recorded on approximately 500 civic war memorials throughout New Zealand.

The Belgian village of Passchendaele has become a byword for the horror of the Great War on the Western Front. There, on 12 October 1917, the New Zealand Division attempted to take a German position at Bellevue Spur. Approximately 960 men were either killed in the fighting or died later of their wounds. The ‘darkest day’ accounted for six percent of New Zealand’s total casualties during the First World War. A further 1700 men were either wounded or became prisoners of war.

‘Tyne Cot’ or ‘Tyne Cottage’ was the name given by the Northumberland Fusiliers to a barn which stood near the level crossing on the Passchendaele-Broodseinde road. Around it were a number of German blockhouses, or pill-boxes. Today, the site is the world’s largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery, and the final resting place of almost 12,000 servicemen of the British Empire from the First World War.

Her Majesty The Queen To Visit Aberdeen

Her Majesty The Queen Will Visit Aberdeen

Friday, 29th September, 2017

Her Majesty The Queen will open the Robertson Family Roof Garden
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Foresterhill, Aberdeen

On arrival at the Matthew Hay Building (Emergency Care Centre), Her Majesty will be met by Councillor Barney Crockett, Lord Provost and Lord Lieutenant for Aberdeen, and representatives of NHS Grampian including Reverend James Falconer, Healthcare Chaplain and project lead for the Roof Garden.  The Queen will also meet the Garden’s architect and designers as well as staff, volunteers, former patients and fundraisers.  Her Majesty will meet representatives of the Robertson family and gardeners in the therapeutic Roof Garden and view the unveiling of a silhouette feature in the Garden.   Reverend Falconer will lead a prayer of dedication after Her Majesty unveils a plaque to open the Robertson Family Roof Garden.

The Robertson Family Roof Garden is a unique and exciting garden space in the heart of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The garden exists to provide easy access to outside space that is constructed and planted to be safe, comforting and invigorating. It allows patients, relatives, visitors and staff the opportunity to engage and interact with a range of growing plants, grasses, and trees, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It also provides shelter, glass, light, visual effects and the chance to move out of the heat of a ward or a clinic environment to feel fresh air, wind – and even rain – and experience external daylight and professionally designed lighting.

The exciting plan for this transformative space began in 2012 when Rev. James Falconer, Healthcare Chaplain, having listened to many patient stories, began looking for outside space to take trauma patients in their beds. There was, at that time, no place available. Through his vision, drive, energy and determination, combined with the enthusiasm and support from many others, the Robertson Family Roof Garden came to being.

With amazing generosity, in 2013, the Royal Bank of Canada offered their entire gold medal winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden, designed by Professor Nigel Dunnett, to NHS Grampian. Professor Dunnett redesigned the garden so that a very unwell patient, fully ventilated, in the intensive care unit, can go outside. It is accessible to wheelchair users and those with portable equipment. Patients with sensory impairments, including light sensitivities, can enjoy and benefit from the surroundings. It is used by children and adults. In short it is available to everyone, whatever their condition, needs or circumstances.

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the Foresterhill site, which includes the University of Aberdeen Medical School, deliver state of the art facilities and technological advances in healthcare for the local population and for people from across the mainland and the islands of the north of Scotland.

This unique garden space, at the heart of the largest health campus in Europe, complements these technological advances by ensuring that patients can experience the peace and tranquillity of space and air, with widely evidenced benefits to recovery and rehabilitation, at the same time as the best possible medical and surgical interventions.

The garden is of particular physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefit to critically ill and long term adults and children, in particular for those recovering from trauma and for those facing the future after a life changing or life limiting diagnosis.

The Robertson Family Roof Garden was funded entirely by fundraising. Rev Falconer led the fundraising effort and successfully raised over £667,000 to enable his vision to become a reality. Individuals and communities, churches, Brownies, Guides, WRIs, Rotaries and hundreds more contributed. A range of Trusts, families and grant giving bodies gave a significant amount. Many people reflected on the benefits that the garden could have brought their loved ones. The kindness and generosity of people who wanted to help was overwhelming. Funds are also in place to maintain and develop the garden going forwards and the garden is now maintained by a former National Trust for Scotland Head Gardener

The hope is that this garden will lead to ‘green space’ being part of future new build design on the Foresterhill site and to the re-development of green spaces in other NHS Grampian sites. Planning for a staff garden on the site is already underway, reflecting a desire to value staff as much as patients.

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE TO ATTEND A METROPOLITAN AND CITY POLICE ORPHANS FUND RECEPTION

Guildhall, London

Wednesday 27th September, 2017

The Duke of Cambridge, Patron of the Metropolitan and City Police Orphans Fund, will attend a reception at Guildhall, London on Wednesday 27th September. The Duke will present a series of awards and scholarships on behalf of the charity, at a ceremony attended by beneficiaries and their families. Afterwards, His Royal Highness will meet children, young people, and family members, who have been supported by the charity over a number of years.

Believed to be the oldest police charity in the world, the Orphans fund began in 1870 initially as an orphanage. In 1937 the orphanage closed and the charity became the present fund which has supported more than 15,000 children. The charity supports the children of serving and former officers of the Metropolitan Police and the City of London Police who subscribed to the Fund whilst serving, and who are either deceased, retired on pension, or are unable to contribute materially to the family upkeep.

Through the Fund, families receive financial assistance and education grants to help towards school trips, extracurricular lessons and university costs. Families also receive some money to help pay for summer holidays and Christmas. When young people finish full time education they receive a clothing grant to assist with the costs of suitable clothing for job interviews – this replaced the tradition of each child receiving a trunk of clothes when they left the orphanage. In 2016, the charity gave over £1,000,000 to families. The Duke of Cambridge became Patron in January 2017.

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE WILL VISIT IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM LONDON TO MEET SURVIVORS AND VETERANS OF WORLD WAR II

London

Thursday 28th September, 2017

The Duke of Cambridge, Patron of the Imperial War Museum Foundation, will visit Imperial War Museum (IWM) London where he will meet Freddie Knoller, who took part in the French Resistance and survived imprisonment in Auschwitz, Monovitz and Bergen-Belsen, as well as two veterans of World War II: Ted Cordery and John Harrison. The Duke will also learn about the second phase of ‘Transforming IWM London’, which will create new Second World War Galleries, Holocaust Galleries and a learning suite.

The second phase of ‘Transforming IWM London’ is a £33.5million project that will open in 2020. The new galleries will enable IWM to transform the way it presents the World War II and the Holocaust, helping visitors to understand the complex narrative of the Holocaust within the context of the World War II, something that no other museum currently does. The galleries will draw heavily upon the individual personal stories from IWM’s collections to present a vivid narrative that reflects the realities of World War II, the Holocaust and the way in which they shaped the world.

Both Ted Cordery and John Harrison served on HMS Belfast, which is the largest object in IWM’s collection. Ted Cordery served as a Leading Torpedo Man during the Battle of North Cape in 1943, which was the last time a naval battle was fought between big-gunned warships. Ted was also serving aboard Belfast when she became Flagship of Bombardment Force E, leading the line of ships into position in the early hours of 6 June in support of the D-Day landings. John Harrison was a Petty Officer in charge of the forward-most gun turret and survived a magnetic mine that hit the ship in the Firth of Forth.

While working for the French Resistance Freddie Knoller was arrested by local police and deported to Auschwitz in October 1943. He was then sent to the Monovitz work camp. In early 1945, he was sent on a death march, and survived a further period of slave labour in the notorious Dora concentration camp, before being transferred to Bergen-Belsen, where he was liberated by the British at the end of the war.

IWM (Imperial War Museums) tells the story of people who have lived, fought and died in conflicts involving Britain and the Commonwealth since the First World War.

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE TO ATTEND
THE WORLD PREMIERE OF
BLUE PLANET II

BFI IMAX, Waterloo

Wednesday 27th September, 2017

The Duke of Cambridge will attend the World Premiere screening of the BBC’s Blue Planet II at the British Film Institute IMAX cinema. The Duke will join Sir David Attenborough, composer Hans Zimmer, invited guests and school children for the special event, celebrating the show’s potential to inspire the next generation of marine conservationists.

Before the screening, an interactive marine-themed experiential will be set up in the cinema’s foyer, where invited school children from Lionel Primary School in Brentford will be taking part in a series of learning activities. The Duke will join them as they take part in the quizzes and will also see some of the special technology used to film the series including the Megadome camera, and a live demonstration of the full breathing apparatus for underwater filming.

The Duke will then join the invited audience in the cinema to watch the special screening. The premiere will begin with the debut of the Blue Planet II prequel which will be globally launched and simulcast at midday following the screening. The five-minute series curtain-raiser features a unique musical collaboration between Radiohead and Hans Zimmer who have joined forces to produce a track to accompany the prequel. This will be followed by a screening of Blue Planet II’s opening episode which will be broadcast on BBC One later this year. The episode is 50 minutes in duration with an additional 10-minute ‘making of’ following immediately after.

The BBC’s latest natural history landmark Blue Planet II will take viewers on a revelatory journey into the greatest, yet least known part of our planet – our oceans. In recent years, our knowledge of what goes on beneath the waves has been transformed, and using cutting-edge breakthroughs in science and technology to explore this final frontier, Blue Planet II will reveal otherworldly places and extraordinary new animal behaviours.

Broadcast in 2001, The Blue Planet was the BBC Studios Natural History Unit’s unprecedented look at the world’s oceans. A generation on, the Blue Planet II team have spent four years mounting 125 expeditions, visiting 39 countries, and have filmed off every continent and across every ocean.
