THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE WILL VISIT IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM LONDON TO MEET SURVIVORS AND VETERANS OF WORLD WAR II

London

Thursday 28th September, 2017

The Duke of Cambridge, Patron of the Imperial War Museum Foundation, will visit Imperial War Museum (IWM) London where he will meet Freddie Knoller, who took part in the French Resistance and survived imprisonment in Auschwitz, Monovitz and Bergen-Belsen, as well as two veterans of World War II: Ted Cordery and John Harrison. The Duke will also learn about the second phase of ‘Transforming IWM London’, which will create new Second World War Galleries, Holocaust Galleries and a learning suite.

The second phase of ‘Transforming IWM London’ is a £33.5million project that will open in 2020. The new galleries will enable IWM to transform the way it presents the World War II and the Holocaust, helping visitors to understand the complex narrative of the Holocaust within the context of the World War II, something that no other museum currently does. The galleries will draw heavily upon the individual personal stories from IWM’s collections to present a vivid narrative that reflects the realities of World War II, the Holocaust and the way in which they shaped the world.

Both Ted Cordery and John Harrison served on HMS Belfast, which is the largest object in IWM’s collection. Ted Cordery served as a Leading Torpedo Man during the Battle of North Cape in 1943, which was the last time a naval battle was fought between big-gunned warships. Ted was also serving aboard Belfast when she became Flagship of Bombardment Force E, leading the line of ships into position in the early hours of 6 June in support of the D-Day landings. John Harrison was a Petty Officer in charge of the forward-most gun turret and survived a magnetic mine that hit the ship in the Firth of Forth.

While working for the French Resistance Freddie Knoller was arrested by local police and deported to Auschwitz in October 1943. He was then sent to the Monovitz work camp. In early 1945, he was sent on a death march, and survived a further period of slave labour in the notorious Dora concentration camp, before being transferred to Bergen-Belsen, where he was liberated by the British at the end of the war.

IWM (Imperial War Museums) tells the story of people who have lived, fought and died in conflicts involving Britain and the Commonwealth since the First World War.

THE WORLD PREMIERE OF
BLUE PLANET II

BFI IMAX, Waterloo

Wednesday 27th September, 2017

The Duke of Cambridge will attend the World Premiere screening of the BBC’s Blue Planet II at the British Film Institute IMAX cinema. The Duke will join Sir David Attenborough, composer Hans Zimmer, invited guests and school children for the special event, celebrating the show’s potential to inspire the next generation of marine conservationists.

Before the screening, an interactive marine-themed experiential will be set up in the cinema’s foyer, where invited school children from Lionel Primary School in Brentford will be taking part in a series of learning activities. The Duke will join them as they take part in the quizzes and will also see some of the special technology used to film the series including the Megadome camera, and a live demonstration of the full breathing apparatus for underwater filming.

The Duke will then join the invited audience in the cinema to watch the special screening. The premiere will begin with the debut of the Blue Planet II prequel which will be globally launched and simulcast at midday following the screening. The five-minute series curtain-raiser features a unique musical collaboration between Radiohead and Hans Zimmer who have joined forces to produce a track to accompany the prequel. This will be followed by a screening of Blue Planet II’s opening episode which will be broadcast on BBC One later this year. The episode is 50 minutes in duration with an additional 10-minute ‘making of’ following immediately after.

The BBC’s latest natural history landmark Blue Planet II will take viewers on a revelatory journey into the greatest, yet least known part of our planet – our oceans. In recent years, our knowledge of what goes on beneath the waves has been transformed, and using cutting-edge breakthroughs in science and technology to explore this final frontier, Blue Planet II will reveal otherworldly places and extraordinary new animal behaviours.

Broadcast in 2001, The Blue Planet was the BBC Studios Natural History Unit’s unprecedented look at the world’s oceans. A generation on, the Blue Planet II team have spent four years mounting 125 expeditions, visiting 39 countries, and have filmed off every continent and across every ocean.

Prince Harry to visit Northern Ireland

Prince Harry arrives in Northern Ireland this morning to visit Ballymena, Belfast and Hillsborough. During this, his first visit to Northern Ireland, the Prince will meet people from across the region, with a focus on the emergency services and young people.

Prince Harry will first visit Ballymena, where he will open the new Northern Ireland Ambulance Service station which combines Ballymena Ambulance Station and North Division Headquarters. The Prince will get a briefing from the design team behind the new £5.6 million facility before watching a demonstration of the station’s resources, including the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) capability, Emergency Resilience, and Training Team. He will see some of the vehicles and ambulances that operate out of the station, and see a demonstration of Paramedic skills before touring the building to view the facilities available to staff. Prince Harry will also take the opportunity to meet some of the staff and crews, to learn about their work in the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, before unveiling a plaque to officially open the station and commemorate his visit.

Prince Harry will then head to Belfast to visit Co-operation Ireland, a peacebuilding organisation working to encourage and promote interaction, dialogue and practical collaboration within Northern Ireland and between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Prince Harry will meet with a range of youth organisations from across Northern Ireland brought together by Co-operation Ireland and will hear how each group is working with young people to promote cross-community links, bringing young people together who would otherwise not meet, and encourage young leaders to positively engage with their communities. Prince Harry will hear about two programmes in particular – the NI National Citizenship Service and the Amazing the Space programmes. The event will conclude with young people from schools across Northern Ireland sharing their school’s Peace Pledge with Prince Harry to launch Year 2 of the youth-led Amazing the Space programme. The event is being hosted at The MAC in Belfast’s vibrant new Cathedral Quarter where afterwards Prince Harry hopes to have the chance to meet members of the public outside at St Anne’s Square.

His Royal Highness will complete his day in Northern Ireland by attending a Garden Party at Hillsborough Castle. The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has hosted this event annually since 1984. Around 2,000 guests are invited each year, drawn from a wide cross-section of Northern Ireland society, including the voluntary and community sectors, local charities, youth organisations and wider civil society. Hillsborough Castle is the official residence of the Royal Family when they are in Northern Ireland, and the home of the Secretary of State since the early 1970s. A Royal Guest of Honour attends each year, and in recent years this event has been attended by The Duke of York in 2012, The Earl of Wessex in 2013, HM The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh during their visit to Northern Ireland in 2014, The Earl and Countess of Wessex in 2015 and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2016.

Princes Visit Support4Grenfell Community Hub

The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry visit newly established Royal Foundation Support4Grenfell Community Hub providing bereavement and emotional support to the Grenfell Tower community

Kensington

Tuesday 5th September, 2017

The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry has established Support4Grenfell Community Hub in north Kensington, to provide additional mental health resources for the children, young people and families affected by the Grenfell fire. Their Royal Highnesses hold links with many of the organisations involved in supporting the community and will visit the hub on Tuesday, 5th September.

While many survivors of the fire are dealing with serious physical injuries, the emotional impact for many families, children and young people has been very serious as well. The Royal Foundation has worked with local leaders, experts in the field, Heads Together partners, and those already providing support in the local community to help to ensure that any additional response is adequately resourced and coordinated. The need for a central coordination space for this activity was identified and The Royal Foundation signed the lease for the facility in July. The hub will provide a dedicated space for various agencies and community groups to continue working collaboratively, reach out to other statutory and voluntary organisations, hold meetings and organise counselling and supervision. There is also space for children and families to come in and speak to the organisations represented there if they need a safe space to talk.

During their visit, Their Royal Highnesses will meet representatives from organisations who are leading the emotional support response at the hub, including Place2Be, Child Bereavement UK, The Art Room and Winston’s Wish. As many of these charities have been working with local partners, schools, community groups within Kensington for some years, it has allowed them to react quickly to scale up their local support in response to the tragedy, as others have done.

Their Royal Highnesses will also meet with members of the Grenfell community and hear from school head teachers, The Clement James Centre, and the Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre Al-Manaar, who are working with the charities to ensure there is specialist long-term support in place to work with the community as it moves forward.

Their Royal Highnesses will then visit the Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre Al-Manaar, to meet members of the local community and see the work that is continuing there. Al-Manaar was one of the first centres that responded to the tragedy on the night of 14th June 2017 by co-ordinating volunteers, food, water, shelter and counselling. It continues to work with the families and residents affected to provide counselling, advice and a safe space.

Prince of Wales to Visit Malta
The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall arrive at the opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, Malta 2015.

The Prince of Wales will attend an event to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the George Cross being awarded to Malta.

The Prince of Wales will deliver the keynote speech at the Our Ocean conference.

On 4th October The Prince of Wales, President of the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association, will visit Malta to mark the 75th anniversary of the George Cross. King George VI awarded the George Cross to Malta on 15th April 1942, in recognition of the bravery, heroism and devotion that its people displayed during the siege of Malta in the Second World War. The George Cross is still present on the Maltese national flag as a symbol of its peoples’ bravery during the conflict.

On 5th October His Royal Highness will deliver the keynote speech at the Our Ocean conference in St Julian’s. The Prince of Wales, who has for a long time been a champion for the health and resilience of the ocean, made his first speech on the environment in December 1968 and has long warned of the irreversible effects of climate change.

The Our Ocean conference series was initiated by the U.S. Department of State, spearheaded by former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. The first Our Ocean conference was held in Washington D.C in June 2014,  then in Chile in 2015 and Washington D.C. in 2016.  The European Union will host the fourth Our Ocean conference in Malta on 5th and 6th October 2017. The conference aims to inspire and empower a new generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, scientists and civil society to identify solutions and commit to actions for safe, secure, clean and sustainably managed oceans.

The Prince will undertake a series of other engagements, including a visit to St Paul’s Anglican Pro-Cathedral in Valletta to view the restoration work. Built in 1844 at the instigation of Queen Adelaide, the cathedral is an integral part of the Valletta skyline and has recently launched a €3 Million restoration campaign. The Duke of Edinburgh is First Friend of the Friends of St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral.

Duke of Cambridge to Visit Spitalfields Crypt Trust

The Duke of Cambridge Will Officially Launch the Skillforce Prince William Award

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE TO VISIT THE SPITALFIELDS CRYPT TRUST

Shoreditch, London

Tuesday 19th September, 2017

On 19th September The Duke of Cambridge will visit the Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT), a charity and social enterprise based in Shoreditch which provides a holistic recovery service to those dealing with complex drug and alcohol addictions, and often homelessness.

Founded in 1965, SCT started as one of the first residential rehabilitation centres in the UK for homeless men suffering from alcoholism. After more than 50 years of helping people through homelessness and addiction, SCT has expanded to provide a range of tailored services to support men and women with their addiction recovery journeys. The charity’s services address an individual’s mental and physical health, their employment and housing needs, personal relationships, and career aspirations.

SCT operates a homeless drop-in centre in the heart of Shoreditch, providing hot food and drinks, alongside advice about shelters and other agencies that can offer long term help. It also provides 16 hostel rooms for those in recovery – many of whom are homeless before they arrive. Residents are able to stay in these rooms for a year or more before moving onto one of the charity’s three independent homes around London. SCT’s other services include a personal development and training centre, open to men and women, where students can attend courses in basic life skills, or begin a vocational hobby such as gardening and artwork.

The charity also runs two social enterprises: Paper & Cup, a coffee-bookshop, and Restoration Station, a vintage furniture shop and refurbishment service. Both provide a supportive training ground for those in the later stages of recovery and rehabilitation to start work again.

The Duke will begin his visit at Paper & Cup, where he will hear more about SCT’s work supporting those recovering from addiction and homelessness. His Royal Highness will then visit the SCT drop-in centre to chat to some of the charity’s service users and volunteers, before meeting a number of SCT therapists at the personal development and training hub. The visit will end at the Restoration Station, where The Duke will see some of the impressive woodwork projects being undertaken by SCT service users.
