THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE MAKES SURPRISE VISIT TO BURLINGTON DANES

ACADEMY
London

Thursday 8 February, 2018

To help mark Children’s Mental Health Week (February 5th-9th) and Safer Internet Day (February 6th), The Duke of Cambridge has made an unannounced visit to Burlington Academy, London, to surprise children taking part in an assembly on cyberbullying and its effect on young people’s mental health.

Hosted by YouTuber Dan Howell, the assembly focused on cyberbullying and what can be done to combat it. Watching the assembly were pupils of Burlington Danes Academy, which is a comprehensive secondary school educating over 1,000 pupils aged 11-18.

They were joined by a number of pupils from Kensington Aldridge Academy (KAA) which had to close in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire. Burlington Danes Academy hosted three year groups from KAA before a temporary school building was built on neighbouring land.

His Royal Highness took time during the assembly to talk about the Heads Together campaign on mental health, as well as meet with social media influencers and young people who’ve been working on the campaign for ‘Stop Speak Support’.

Stop Speak Support is a new digital code of conduct that was launched by The Duke of Cambridge in October, and is one of the outcomes of the Royal Foundation‘s Taskforce on Cyberbullying. The campaign aims to help young people navigate life online and support them in responding to cyberbullying.

PRINCE HARRY AND MS. MARKLE TO VISIT EDINBURGH

Edinburgh, Scotland

Tuesday, 13th February 2018

Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle will visit Edinburgh on Tuesday, 13th February on their first official joint visit to Scotland. Throughout the day Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will have the opportunity to meet members of the public, learn more about organisations that work in the local community and nationwide, and celebrate youth in the Scottish Year of Young People 2018.

Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s first stop will be at the Esplanade in front of the iconic Edinburgh Castle, where they will be officially welcomed to the city by the Royal Marines Scotland Band. Prince Harry became Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Marines in December
2017.

Inside the Castle at the historic Edinburgh Garrison, which looks out across the city, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will observe the firing of the One O’clock Gun. The tradition of firing a gun started in 1861 to mark time for ships in the Firth of Forth. Today the British Army fire a 105 millimetre L118 Light Gun, which is the model currently used in operations worldwide.

Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will then travel on to Social Bite, a social business and café located in Edinburgh’s New Town. Social Bite runs social enterprise cafés throughout Scotland and use this platform to distribute 100,000 items of food and hot drinks to homeless people each year, as well as employing staff who have experienced homelessness themselves. In the café, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will learn more about the social enterprise, meet staff and tour the kitchen.

To conclude their visit, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will attend a reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse to celebrate youth achievements, marking Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018. The Year of Young People is an initiative that aims to inspire Scotland through its young people: celebrating their achievements, strengthening their voice on social issues and creating new opportunities for them to shine. Youth representatives from various charities and organisations that work with and for young people across the country will be present, and the reception will provide an opportunity for them to talk about their aspirations for the Year and the activities that they have been involved in so far.

Duchess and Countess to Host Commonwealth Fashion Exchange Reception

The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange Reception at Buckingham Palace

Monday 19th February, 2018

HRH The Duchess of Cambridge and HRH The Countess of Wessex will host a reception at Buckingham Palace on behalf of The Queen during London Fashion Week to celebrate and showcase a new creative initiative – the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange.

Launched on the 1st February by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange aims to create partnerships between established and emerging talent from across the 52 member countries, in the lead up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London this April.

The initiative uses fashion as a common language and platform to help people understand the modern Commonwealth in a different way. It will celebrate creativity, sustainable production and manufacturing, trade links and ethical supply chains across the fashion industry, from business and design to textile and fabric design and manufacturing, to craft and artisan skills.

Over the last six months, major fashion designers such as Stella McCartney (UK), Karen Walker (New Zealand) and Bibi Russell (Bangladesh) have partnered with artisan producers in small nations who exemplify traditional handcraft techniques and trades, with a view to creating a ‘skills exchange’. The reception at Buckingham Palace will showcase the best of Commonwealth contemporary fashion and creativity with an exhibition of some of the bespoke fashion ‘looks’ which are the result of these exchanges.

A global audience will also have access to view the designs through an online exhibition to be created on the Google Arts and Culture website. This platform will create a new community and network, which includes an evolving directory of artisans and designers from across the Commonwealth countries.

The Reception will bring together influential people from across the global fashion
industry, including designers, manufacturers, textile producers, and craftspeople.

Map of Commonwealth Fashion Exchanges (by region)The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange is an initiative which focuses on highlighting talent from across the 52 Commonwealth countries. The Exchange has been created by Ego-
Age, a consultancy which is working in partnership with the global fashion industry towards a sustainable future, in partnership with The Commonwealth Fashion Council, and with support from The British Fashion Council and NEST, a global NGO building a new economy and network for handworkers and artisans preserving cultural traditions and improving wellbeing and compliance.

Following a selection and matching process, designers and artisans were asked to produce a fashion ‘look’ showcasing the creative skill and design ethos, in keeping with core sustainable values set out in the Green Carpet Challenge Principles of Sustainable Excellence. The partnerships highlight traditional heritage, skills, craftsmanship and industry, as well as innovation and technology.

Commonwealth Fashion Exchange Case Study - Sierra Leone and GhanaThe Commonwealth is a network of 52 member countries which are bound by a common set of values and a shared mission to improve the wellbeing of all 2.4 billion Commonwealth citizens across the globe. The Commonwealth has achieved a great amount since its creation 68 years ago and remains a global beacon for democracy, human rights and the rule of law. As a voluntary network, the Commonwealth relies on soft power to effect change. Its authority comes from agreement and its influence from persuasion. As Head of the Commonwealth since she ascended the throne in 1953, Her Majesty The Queen has seen the organisation grow from 11 members to 52. Baroness Patricia Scotland is the 6th Secretary General of the Commonwealth, which covers a third of the world’s population – 2.4 billion citizens, 60% under the age of 30.
