Queen To Present New Colours To Scots Guards

The Queen presents new colours to the Scots Guards

Thursday 18th May 2017

Her Majesty The Queen, Colonel-in-Chief, will present new colours to the 1st Battalion and F Company Scots Guards in the Garden at Buckingham Palace on Thursday 18th May. The Queen will be accompanied by The Duke of Kent, Colonel of the Regiment.

The Scots Guards has a longstanding reputation as a tough fighting infantry force. The Regiment also has a proud history of service to the Sovereign in times of war and peace, be it on operations or as part of ceremonial roles such as Changing the Guard and Trooping the Colour.

Her Majesty’s association with the Scots Guards dates back to her Coronation, when she became Colonel-in-Chief. The Queen first presented new colours to the Scots Guards at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in 1965 and last presented new colours in 2002, in the year of her Golden Jubilee.

The Queen’s arrival on the West Terrace will be announced by a Royal Salute, followed by the National Anthem. Her Majesty will inspect the Regiment, present new colours and address the parade, which will conclude with three cheers and a march past.

Following the parade, Her Majesty will meet a representative group of the Scots Guards Family and sit for a Regimental photograph with the new colours. The Duke of Kent will meet serving and retired soldiers and families at the Regimental Garden Party to follow the parade.

The 1st Battalion Scots Guards is based in Aldershot, Hampshire. As the Mechanised Infantry Battalion of the Guards Division it is held at high readiness and permanently assigned to 12th (Armoured Infantry) Brigade within 3rd (UK) Division. In this role they continue the traditions of the famous Guards Armoured Division. The 1st Battalion will remain in the Mechanised Infantry role and will soon move to Catterick. There it will be equipped with a new eight-wheeled mechanised infantry vehicle and pioneer the new Strike Brigade role which will be a mainstay of the future Army design.

F Company Scots Guards was set up in 1993 when the 2nd battalion Scots Guards was placed into suspended animation as a result of Army reforms. It is responsible for maintaining the traditions of the Scots Guards and all new guardsmen complete several months in F Company Scots Guards undertaking Public Duties whilst continuing to train as a fully deployable light role infantry company.

Colours are the Regimental Flags of the British Army. They were originally used as rallying points on the battlefield as long ago as the Kings of Babylon. They were vital because without modern communications, it was all too easy for troops to become disorientated by the fog of war. From the reign of Queen Anne every regiment was awarded two colours: the Queen’s Colour and the Regimental Colour.

Kensington Palace: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and
Prince Harry to host ‘Party At The Palace’

 Saturday 13th May

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry will host a very special tea party in the grounds of Buckingham Palace, to honour the children of those who have died serving in the Armed Forces.

The family focused event will feature live performances from Jess Glynne and Nina Conti, as well as children’s entertainers and magician Lance Corporal Richard Jones. There will be a number of stalls where guests can take part in face painting, arts and crafts, science experiments, circus skills and cupcake decorating. The event has been organised by Fait Accompli, and will see members of The Royal Foundation’s Full Effect and Coach Core programmes leading workshops in beatboxing, breakdancing and a number of other sports. The party will conclude with a special display from the RAF Falcons.

Invites have been issued to the children aged up to 18 years of those who have died in service for their country, with each young person accompanied by a parent or guardian. Representatives from charities which help support families and children dealing with bereavement, including Child Bereavement UK, Scotty’s Little Soldiers, Winston’s Wish and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, will also be attending to provide practical support on the day, and will each have stalls offering more information about the services which they provide to families.

Their Royal Highnesses have arranged the event as a way to acknowledge and honour the fact that a number of young children have had to come to terms with the loss of someone very close to them at a young age.

The Duke and Duchess and Prince Harry hope the event will provide an opportunity for these children to broaden their support networks amongst other families with similar experiences.

Duke of Edinburgh Autumn Retirement

0
Duke of Edinburgh – Planned Admittance to Hospital

His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year. In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of The Queen.

Prince Philip will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August, both individually and accompanying The Queen. Thereafter, The Duke will not be accepting new invitations for visits and engagements, although he may still choose to attend certain public events from time to time.

The Duke of Edinburgh is Patron, President or a member of over 780 organisations, with which he will continue to be associated, although he will no longer play an active role by attending engagements.

Her Majesty will continue to carry out a full programme of official engagements with the support of members of the Royal Family.

Speaking on the announcement of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh stepping down from his public duties, Robert Meadowcroft, Chief Executive of the Muscular Dystrophy UK, said:

“His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh has been our dedicated Patron for over 50 years. We cannot thank him enough for his active support, which has been a precious asset in the fight against muscle-wasting conditions.

“In 1966 HRH The Duke of Edinburgh agreed to become Patron following a request from our then President, the late Lord Richard Attenborough. He had the kindness and foresight to lend his backing to a charity focused on what was then a little known, poorly understood condition. The Duke’s backing was an ‘immense encouragement’ then, as it has remained to this day.

“Through the decades, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh has helped to raise awareness and promote understanding of this vitally important cause. He has also met hundreds of individuals and families who struggle to live with muscular dystrophy every day. These moments and memories will be cherished for many years to come.

“We at Muscular Dystrophy UK will remain ever grateful to our Patron, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and wish him a well-deserved and happy retirement.”
