The Queen has been Head of the Commonwealth throughout her 65 year reign. This is an important symbolic and unifying role. As Head, Her Majesty personally reinforces the links by which the Commonwealth joins people together from around the world.

Throughout Her Majesty’s reign, the Commonwealth has grown from just seven nations to 52 members representing over 2.4 billion people. During this time, The Queen has undertaken more than 200 visits to Commonwealth countries and visited every country of the Commonwealth (with the exception of Cameroon, which joined in 1995 and Rwanda which joined in 2009) as well as making many repeat visits.

There are two major projects which have been launched in recognition of Her Majesty’s lifetime of service to the Commonwealth – the Queen’s Young Leaders and the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy.

Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (QCC)
Launched by The Queen at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Malta in 2015, an appeal was made to all 52 Commonwealth nations to contribute areas of indigenous forest to be preserved in perpetuity to mark Her Majesty’s lifetime of service to the Commonwealth.

Since then, around 39 Commonwealth countries have dedicated forestry projects or are planting new forests, with another 10 countries in the process of finalising their submissions. By the time of CHOGM in 2018, it is expected that all nations of the Commonwealth will have joined the QCC initiative to create a global network of indigenous forests to benefit communities and wildlife, now, and into the future.

Queen’s Young Leaders (QYL)
The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme was launched in 2014 by The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust in partnership with Comic Relief and the Royal Commonwealth Society.

The programme recognises and celebrates inspiring young people from across the Commonwealth who are taking the lead in their communities and using their skills to transform lives.

Each year from 2014 to 2018, 60 exceptional young people have been selected to receive a Queen’s Young Leaders Award and become ‘Queen’s Young Leaders’ – one for every year that The Queen had served as Head of the Commonwealth at the time of her Diamond Jubilee.

The final round of winners of the Queen’s Young Leaders Awards was announced in December.

Duchess of Cambridge Records Children’s Mental Health Week Message

The Duchess of Cambridge records video message in support of Children’s Mental Health Week 2018

5 February 2018

Children’s mental health charity Place2Be launches week-long campaign encouraging children and young people to celebrate what makes them unique

HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, Royal Patron of children’s mental health charity Place2Be, has recorded a special video message to help launch Children’s Mental Health Week 2018 (5-11 February).

The theme of this year’s campaign, which was created by Place2Be, is ‘Being Ourselves’ – encouraging children and young people to feel comfortable with who they are and celebrate what makes them unique. Low self-esteem affects more than 8 in 10 of the pupils who receive Place2Be’s one-to-one support, but when children are supported to have a positive view of themselves it can have a real impact on their confidence and can help them cope with life’s challenges.

The video message was filmed at last month’s visit to Reach Academy Feltham, where Her Royal Highness spoke to two Year 11 pupils Lauren and Sophia, Mum of two Mandy, and Principal Ed Vainker. The pupils in the video have benefited from Place2Be’s ‘whole school’ approach to mental health, which aims to create a culture of openness and confidence in understanding their emotions and feelings. Identifying potential problems early and providing support in a familiar environment without stigma and plays a huge part in their emotional wellbeing and mental health.

In the message, Her Royal Highness highlights the importance of encouraging children to feel comfortable with who they are, saying:

“Childhood is an incredibly important moment in our lives. It is the time when we explore our personalities, discover the potential that lies within us and learn how to be ourselves. Our experience of the world at this early stage helps to shape who we become as adults, how we begin to feel comfortable in our own skin.”

The Duchess also refers to the role that all adults play in helping children become the best versions of themselves:

“Some children will be facing tougher challenges than others, but I firmly believe that while we cannot change their circumstances, we can ensure that every child is given the best possible support to ensure they fulfil their true potential.  This is best achieved when we, the adults in their lives, work together to give children the emotional strength they need to face their futures and thrive.

“Whether we are school leaders, teachers, support staff or parents, we each have a role to play. When we are open and honest with each other about the challenges we face, we can work together to ensure the children in our care have the chance to become the best version of themselves.”

Catherine Roche, Chief Executive of Place2Be said: “We know from our work in schools that some children find it difficult to think of themselves positively, as it’s all too easy nowadays to compare ourselves negatively to others, especially online.

“This Children’s Mental Health Week we are encouraging everyone, and especially children and young people, to focus on what makes them who they are, and to celebrate their unique qualities and strengths. We’ll all face difficult times in our lives, but helping children to have a positive view of themselves can help them find the inner strength and resilience to cope with those challenges.”

Ed Vainker, Principal at Reach Academy Feltham, said: “The week, and the interest and commitment of the Duchess offers an opportunity to celebrate the great work done by schools, parents and other groups around the country to support young people to become confident, resilient adults”

The Duchess of Cambridge has been Patron of Place2Be since 2013, reflecting her interest in children’s mental health and the importance of early intervention to provide children with mental health services in school, reaching children at the earliest stage possible to tackle problems before they escalate.

The video message can be watched above and has kindly been produced by BAFTA Kids for Place2Be.

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE TO OPEN AN ACTION ON ADDICTION COMMUNITY

TREATMENT CENTRE
WICKFORD, ESSEX

Wednesday, 7th February 2018

The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of Action on Addiction, will officially open a new treatment centre in Wickford. The centre opened its doors to clients in October 2018 and hosts a rolling cycle of nine-week long addiction recovery programmes. While at the centre The Duchess will learn more about the charity’s community-based recovery programme: ‘Clouds in the Community’. She will join a round-table discussion with healthcare professionals, meet staff and clients at different points of their recovery, and attend a reception to commemorate the opening.

‘Clouds in the Community’ is a Self-Help Addiction Recovery Programme (SHARP) that provides an effective alternative to residential treatment, and enables the charity to provide services for more people in more places. ‘Clouds in the Community’ is the starting point for long term recovery and abstinence, and leads to improvements in participants’ physical and psychological health, self-efficacy, and overall quality of life. Independent evaluation of the programme in Essex showed that almost 80% of clients did not return to any treatment service upon completion of the scheme.

Action on Addiction offers life-saving treatment to individuals and families at its flagship treatment centre, Clouds House in Wiltshire, and at its community-based treatment centres in Essex and Liverpool. It also offers education to degree level at The Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies and funds and promotes research into effective responses to addiction. The Duchess of Cambridge has been Patron of Action on Addiction since 2012.

The British Guide to the Royal Event of 2018

We are all looking forward to the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday 19th May. And we will be producing two amazing picture-packed specials to
celebrate the Royal Event of 2018!
The first of these will be available before the wedding and will answer all your questions about what will be happening on the big day – including who the Best Man, Bridesmaids and Page Boys will be, who will be on the VIP guest list, what the arrangements will be for the reception… and even where Prince Harry and Meghan will be holding their Hen and
Stag Nights!
Of course we already know that the ceremony will be held inside St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, which may not be as famous as Westminster Abbey but has hosted Royal weddings for centuries – most recently the ceremony for Prince Harry’s father Prince
Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall back in 2005.
It is not only the final resting place for Monarchs including Henry VIII and Charles I – but also Prince Harry’s great-grandmother, the Queen Mother, whom he adored. Prince Harry was also Christened there.
So, whilst we already know the day and the place, the other questions we know you will want answered are all in the first of our Royal Wedding specials, on sale six weeks before the event itself. All the pomp and pageantry of the Royal Wedding itself will be on display in our second special Royal Wedding edition, so be sure to pick up both and make your

PRINCE HARRY AND MS. MEGHAN MARKLE TO ATTEND
ENDEAVOUR FUND AWARDS CEREMONY

London

Thursday 1st February, 2018

Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle will attend the annual Endeavour Fund Awards at
Goldsmiths’ Hall on Thursday 1st February. His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle will celebrate the achievements of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women who have taken part in remarkable sporting and adventure challenges over the last year.

The Royal Foundation’s Endeavour Fund supports the ambitions of these men and women
to use challenges to help with their physical, psychological and social recovery and
rehabilitation.

Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will first attend a pre-ceremony reception where they will
meet the inspiring nominees, as well as endeavour participants and key supporters of the
Endeavour Fund. They will then attend the awards ceremony, where three prizes will be
awarded:

  • The Recognising Achievement Award – awarded to the individual who has best
utilised their endeavour to promote and catalyse their recovery
  • The Celebrating Excellence Award – awarded to the individual who has endeavoured
to achieve excellence in their chosen sport or adventure challenge
  • The Henry Worsley Award – awarded to the individual who has best inspired others
through the demonstration of determination in the face of adversity, whilst
endeavouring to support others with their recovery through sport or adventure
    challenge.

The Henry Worsley Award is named after the late Henry Worsley, who tragically lost his life
in January 2016 whilst attempting to cross the Antarctic landmass, solo and unsupported.
Henry, a career soldier and an experienced polar adventurer, undertook this incredible
expedition in order to raise money for the Endeavour Fund.

The Endeavour Fund is a project led by The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of
Cambridge and Prince Harry. The fund plays an important role in ensuring that more servicemen and women have the opportunity to rediscover their self-belief and fighting
spirit through physical challenges. It aims to target those that are hard to reach and to
support activities that contribute to the participants’ recovery – either through mentorship,
qualifications or work opportunities.

Since its launch in 2012, the Endeavour Fund has supported 66 different projects that have
directly assisted over 2,265 WIS. Through their own fundraising, these endeavours have
collectively raised over £2.5million for other forces charities across the sector.

Rewiring Buckingham Palace

0

This short film shows the work being done to remove ageing and potentially dangerous electrical cabling from Buckingham Palace. So far, some 2km of Vulcanised Indian Rubber (VIR) cabling has been replaced – equivalent to the length of 40 Olympic sized swimming pools. Installed in the late 1940s, VIR becomes brittle with age and poses a fire risk.

Removing the oldest electrical wiring is the first stage of a comprehensive Reservicing of Buckingham Palace. As set out in the Royal Trustees’ Report of November 2016, elements of the Palace’s plumbing, electrical cabling and heating have not been updated since shortly after the Second World War. These services are now in urgent need of a complete overhaul to prevent long-term damage to the building and its contents.

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE WILL VISIT KING’S COLLEGE LONDON AND THE SOUTH LONDON AND MAUDSLEY NHS TRUST

London

Wednesday, 24th January 2018

The Duchess of Cambridge will visit The Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute, at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London, and the Perinatal Service at Bethlem Royal Hospital, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust on Wednesday 24 January.

The Duchess is keen to continue developing an understanding of the challenges and issues surrounding maternal mental health, to learn what support is available, and to hear at first-
hand about the science underpinning our understanding of the biological influences on maternal mental health. At least 20 percent of women are affected by mental health
problems during pregnancy or in the first year following the birth of a child. If left
untreated, it can have significant and long-lasting effects on the woman and her family.

The Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute is one of Europe’s largest centres for
interdisciplinary neuroscience excellence. The Institute brings together 250 clinicians and
scientists from many disciplines to develop new therapies for neurological and psychiatric
disorders through innovative research. It is part of the IoPPN at King’s, which is world
renowned for its academic and clinical research and education in mental health and
neuroscience.

Her Royal Highness will visit the Institute’s laboratory to receive a briefing on its work in
perinatal research before meeting with senior academics conducting research in perinatal
psychiatry.

The Duchess will then visit the Mother and Baby Unit at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, part of
South London Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The unit specialises in the treatment of antenatal and postnatal mental health illnesses including postnatal depression and post-
partum psychosis. The integrated inpatient clinical service allows mothers who face mental health challenges to be admitted with their babies, to minimise the disruption of mother-
infant relationship. The holistic treatment programme offered supports the mother in developing a relationship with her infant in order to reduce the impact of the mother’s
illness on the child. All patients are supported by psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health
nurses, nursery nurses, midwives and other professionals.

Her Royal Highness will have the chance to visit the Unit’s nursery area and meet with
several patients who are currently undergoing treatment. The Duchess will also visit the
Video Therapy room where she will be shown videos of mother-baby interaction used as
therapeutic tool in the Unit. Before departure, The Duchess will meet professionals involved
in perinatal mental health care, including community nurses, midwives and health visitors.
