HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN WILL VISIT NEWMARKET

Thursday 9th March 2023

Engagement 1:

Her Majesty The Queen will visit the British Racing School to mark their 40th anniversary.

In 2023, The British Racing School celebrates its 40th anniversary, having been officially opened by the then Prince of Wales on 23 November 1983. Over the past four decades it has trained thousands of people and equipped them with the skills to excel in Britain’s second biggest spectator sport, horse racing.

With over 25 specialist racing courses on offer, its flagship programme is the Foundation Course, a Level 2 diploma apprenticeship for 16-25 year olds, which prepares young people for jobs as stable staff; riding and looking after the sport’s racehorses. To date, some 4,000 young people have successfully completed the course and gone on to work in the industry including well-known jockeys Tom Marquand, Paul Hanagan and Josephine Gordon, all of whom have won the ‘Champion Apprentice Jockey’ title.

The British Racing School is also home to the Newmarket Pony Academy, a community project which uses horses and ponies to positively impact mental health and the well-being of children in Newmarket and its neighbouring communities. It is also the base for the Riding A Dream Academy which works to increase diversity and inclusion within the sport.

The Queen will first visit Newmarket Pony Academy (NPA) stables accompanied by the Chief Executive of The British Racing School, Andrew Braithwaite, and the Chair of Trustees of The British Racing School, Julia Budd. Her Majesty will meet local school children grooming the horses and, from the viewing gallery, watch students of the Flexible Learning Programme during a training lesson.

In the Pearce Barn, Her Majesty will be introduced to students and horses from the Foundation Course before viewing three “Best Turned Out” horses in the Main Yard.

Her Majesty will go on to observe students cantering and then meet workplace apprentices practising on the mechanical equicisers in the Simulator Room. The school was the first training provider in the world to make the MK9 Racewood Simulator, a fully immersive racing simulator, available to its students.

The visit will end in the Main Yard where Her Majesty will meet supporters, staff members and those who were riding on the straight gallop. Finally, the Queen will unveil a plaque to mark the 40th anniversary and a group photo opportunity will follow.

Engagement 2:

Her Majesty The Queen will unveil the painting of the Belvoir Huntsman, John Holliday, at the British Sporting Art Trust, Palace House, Palace Street, Newmarket.

British Sporting Art Trust

The British Sporting Art Trust (BSAT) was set up in 1977 to celebrate and promote all aspects of British sporting art. Her Majesty has had a close relationship with BSAT since 2021 with works commissioned by the BSAT featured in ‘Camilla’s Country Life’, when the then Duchess acted as the guest editor of Country Life in July 2022 and the accompanying television programme.

Palace House

The National Horseracing Museum is the home of the British Sporting Art Trust. Palace House is situated on the site of the palace built by King Charles II in 1671 for his bi-annual visits to Newmarket. The painting which Her Majesty will unveil will sit in the King’s Bedroom which was the centre of court life when King Charles II visited Newmarket.

The Painting

The subject of the painting is John Holliday who was Huntsman to the Belvoir Hounds from 2010 to 2022. The artist is Charles Church, an internationally renowned painter of horses, landscapes and country life. Born in 1970, he was brought up on the Northumbrian coast where he developed a keen eye for the horse from an early age and soon became a recognised talent as an equestrian artist.

With over 170 schoolchildren and volunteers greeting Her Majesty, the Queen will be met by John Chatfeild-Roberts (BSAT Chair of Trustees).

The Queen will be invited into Palace House, meeting the artist Charles Church and signing the visitors’ book.

Proceeding upstairs, into the King’s Bedroom, Her Majesty will unveil the Belvoir Huntsman before joining a reception of 40 invited guests.

HIS MAJESTY THE KING WILL VISIT UKRAINIAN MILITARY RECRUITS UNDERTAKING TRAINING IN SOUTH WEST ENGLAND

Monday 20th February 2023

The King will watch a short defensive training exercise for Ukrainian military recruits being trained by British and international partner forces in the U.K. The mission delivers basic combat training over five weeks to Ukrainian recruits who will return to fight in Ukraine.

His Majesty, accompanied by the Chief of General Staff General Sir Patrick Sanders, will meet additional international military personnel (conducting training in other areas of the country) who have joined forces with the British Army to undertake the ongoing training for the Ukrainian recruits. His Majesty will also meet instructors from 1st Battalion Irish Guards, the UK’s Ranger Regiment, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Lithuania, Norway, Denmark, The Netherlands, Sweden and Finland before meeting many of the Ukrainian recruits undertaking the training programme.

Ukrainian recruits have been trained in the UK since July 2022. The commitment is due to continue throughout 2023.

The course is 35 days long and trains the recruits with two primary principles providing the backbone of the training – survivability and lethality. The recruits are being taught how to survive in a hostile environment. Therefore, basic fieldcraft, medical care, marksmanship, weapon handling, and law of armed conflict awareness are key areas that the course focuses on. Most of the recruits have little or no military experience when they arrive though some have been fighting already on the frontline. The age range varies widely, and the recruits come from a mixture of professional backgrounds. Approximately 25% of the recruits speak basic English and so the use of interpreters is key to the delivery.

Coronation Emblem

The Coronation Emblem – which will feature throughout May’s historic celebrations – pays tribute to The King’s love of the natural world, depicting the flora of the four nations in the shape of St Edward’s Crown.

About the Emblem

The emblem pays tribute to The King’s love of the natural world, unifying the flora of the four nations of the United Kingdom; the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales and the shamrock of Northern Ireland. Together, the flowers create the shape of St Edward’s Crown, with which His Majesty The King will be crowned during the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, 6th May. The emblem has been designed using the red, white and blue of the union flag.

The emblem will feature throughout the historic celebrations in May, including the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey and the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle, as well as national events, street parties and community gatherings. The emblem will also be used for all official merchandise commemorating the Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort, and across digital and social media.

About the Designer

The official emblem of the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort has been unveiled by Buckingham Palace. Created by the internationally revered designer Sir Jony Ive KBE and his creative collective, LoveFrom, the emblem symbolises and celebrates the historic beginning of the new Reign.

Speaking about the design of the Coronation emblem, Sir Jony Ive said:

“It is such an honour to be able to contribute to this remarkable national occasion, and our team is so very proud of this work. The design was inspired by King Charles’ love of the planet, nature, and his deep concern for the natural world.

“The emblem speaks to the happy optimism of spring and celebrates the beginning of this new Carolean era for the United Kingdom. The gentle modesty of these natural forms combine to define an emblem that acknowledges both the joyful and profound importance of this occasion.”

Sir Jony Ive KBE is a British designer. Formerly the Chief Design Officer at Apple, he holds more than 14,000 patents worldwide, uniquely spanning user interface and hardware design. Sir Jony was appointed a Royal Designer for Industry in 2003 and an honorary fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2006. He was awarded the RSA’s Benjamin Franklin Medal in 2004 and the Professor Stephen Hawking Fellowship by the Cambridge Union Society in 2018. He holds honorary doctorates from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and the Royal College of Art, where he currently serves as chancellor.

LoveFrom is a creative collective of designers, architects, musicians, filmmakers, writers, engineers and artists. The collective was founded by Sir Jony in 2019 and has studios in London and San Francisco. Sir Jony and the LoveFrom team designed the Seal of the Terra Carta, an initiative established by the then Prince of Wales which recognises private sector companies that are leading the way in creating sustainable markets.
