THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CORNWALL WILL VISIT FALMOUTH

Thursday 9th February 2023

Their Royal Highnesses will make their first joint official visit to Cornwall since taking on the roles of Duke and Duchess of Cornwall when they visit Falmouth today. The Duke and Duchess will learn about Cornwall’s maritime heritage before visiting a local community centre which is going the extra mile to give opportunities to individuals while building a supportive and cohesive community.

Engagement 1:

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall will visit the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth where they will learn more about the rich maritime heritage of Cornwall and how the Museum is working to highlight the relevance of maritime issues to the present day.

The National Maritime Museum Cornwall is located in Discovery Quay and is celebrating its 20th birthday this year, having been established in 2003. It features fifteen galleries, a boat building workshop and interactive exhibits, making it a popular destination for families and tourists across Cornwall and beyond.

During their visit, the Duke and Duchess will first spend time in the museum’s workshop where they will meet local people working on the refurbishment of the Kiwi, a fourteen-foot sailing dinghy which was presented to Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh as a wedding present from the Royal New Zealand Navy.

Their Royal Highnesses will also hear from a group of young people who are taking part in the ‘Young and Talented Cornwall’ scheme which provides financial support to help young people from across Cornwall fulfill their potential, regardless of their financial means or background. In total, the fund has given out almost £350,000 to some 275 individuals in the past ten years – supporting future Olympic medal winners, international rugby players, and musicians now playing in major orchestras, among others.

Finally, the Duke and Duchess will watch pupils from a local school taking part in a model boat race before departing the museum.

Engagement 2:

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall will visit the Dracaena Centre to learn about the wide variety of support and services that the organisation provides to local people, with a mission of building a healthy, happy and mutually supportive society.

Located between Falmouth and Penryn, the centre serves both towns and the surrounding rural area. It has been in operation since 2008 and supports around 10,000 people a year. Through services including family and youth support, children’s activities, legal advice, sports and fitness and community food programmes, the centre aims to empower individuals, promote equal opportunity and build a stronger community. Progress is monitored using a range of indicators from improved physical and mental wellbeing, increased self-esteem, better development of relationships and the advancement of life skills.

During their visit, the Duke and Duchess will spend time in a session for local mothers and their young children, hearing from them about how the Dracaena Centre has supported them as parents and promoted their children’s development through play and creativity.

Their Royal Highnesses will then speak to representatives from St Petrocs, a local independent charity working with individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Cornwall. The organisation provides services including outreach, housing advice, emergency accommodation, counselling and training with the aim of supporting its clients to find a permanent route out of homelessness.

Finally, Their Royal Highnesses will visit the NHS Wellbeing Hub hosted in the centre and hear how they are providing community based mental health and wellbeing support across the local area.

THE QUEEN WILL VISIT STORM FAMILY CENTRE

Thursday 9th February 2023

The Queen will visit the STORM Family Centre as it marks its 19th anniversary. The centre supports people affected by domestic violence and offers services to young and older people within the community.

Her Majesty will meet Sabrina Elba, who is STORM’s Patron and Kanya King CBE (the British entrepreneur who is the founder of the MOBO Awards and a supporter of the charity). Her Majesty will meet the centre’s lunch club members, before joining a discussion with domestic violence survivors and supporters and users of the centre.

STORM was founded by Marie Hanson MBE. The charity offers services to the local community including counselling for domestic violence sufferers and survivors, as well as for women and children who have suffered sexual abuse. It also has a focus on youth work and general wellbeing. The charity started by helping four women and has grown from strength to strength in the last 19 years, during which time it has supported around 3,000 women to date, and over 1,000 young people.

The charity is key to the community and helps those in need of employment and assistance. It offers childcare services, career and training courses, and extensive youth work. STORM also has its own nursery complete with a sensory room to cater for children with special educational needs and children who have suffered trauma and abuse.

The charity works hard to provide empowerment opportunities for people to gain education and build confidence and has an open-door policy for users.

On arrival at the centre, Her Majesty will be greeted by Marie Hanson and other dignitaries before meeting Sabrina Elba and Kanya King in the reception area.

Her Majesty will then visit the community kitchen where she will meet some of the centre’s attendees, along with nursery staff and volunteer helpers.

The Queen will meet five survivors, along with Bishop Rose and Kanya King during a domestic violence discussion over a cup of tea, before joining a reception where some of the activities that STORM offers will be showcased: including candle making, art lessons and computer skills. HIS MAJESTY THE KING WILL VISIT LEIGHTON HOUSE

Thursday 9th February 2023

His Majesty The King will visit the newly-renovated museum Leighton House to hear about the artistic partnership with Turquoise Mountain, the charity founded by the then Prince of Wales to preserve and develop traditional craft practices across Afghanistan, Myanmar, and the Middle East, and to drive economic development across the regions.

At Leighton House, the former home and studio of the leading Victorian artist, Lord Leighton, the King will view a suite of specially commissioned furniture by Turquoise Mountain, which has been handmade for the museum by Syrian and Jordanian artisans based in Amman, who His Majesty met while visiting the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 2021. His Majesty will hear about the intricate craftsmanship and design process behind the pieces, inspired by motifs found on a Syrian chest acquired by Lord Leighton during his travels.

The King will view the first piece of contemporary artwork commissioned by Leighton House; an 11-metre high mural, located in the museum’s Helical Staircase. The piece was inspired by a poem by the 13th century Persian poet Rumi, and explores the themes of unity and common humanity. The King will meet the Iranian artist of the mural, Shahrzad Ghaffari. The King will then meet members of staff at Leighton House, in the Winter Studio.

In the Main Studio, the King will hear about Turquoise Mountain’s ongoing work in Afghanistan and Burma, and will see a display of new work created by artisans across both regions. In particular, His Majesty will hear about the ancient skill of Afghan carpet weaving, and meet Turquoise Mountain’s partners who have championed the work of traditional artisans for many years.

The King will visit the centrepiece of Leighton House, the Arab Hall, which features a renowned collection of Islamic tiles and mosaic floors, before departing.

THE PRINCESS OF WALES WILL JOIN WORLD RECORD-BREAKING CAPTAIN PREET CHANDI ON SCHOOL VISIT TO CELEBRATE HER EXPEDITION ACROSS ANTARCTICA

Derby

Wednesday 8th February 2023

The Princess of Wales will visit Landau Forte College Derby on Wednesday 8th February with Captain Preet Chandi MBE to celebrate her return from her solo expedition across Antarctica.

The Princess of Wales was patron of Preet’s expedition, where Captain Chandi broke the world record for the furthest unsupported solo Polar expedition in history. Pushing the boundaries of human endeavor, Preet covered 922 miles in 70 days and 16 hours, skiing for 13-15 hours a day with as little as five hours sleep at times. Preet pulled all her kit and supplies on a sledge weighing around 120kg while battling temperatures of -30c and wind speeds of up to 60mph.

Captain Chandi undertook the challenge to inspire future generations to believe in themselves, to push their boundaries and show how the outdoors can build the life skills to help them achieve their dreams. This school visit in her hometown kicks off Captain Chandi’s UK-wide tour of schools during which she will share her story and her inspirational message with the next generation.

During the visit, Captain Chandi will make a speech to students about her expedition and will be joined by the Princess in presenting an award to Simrat Soggi, one of the winners of Preet’s national school logo competition. Her Royal Highness will then join students as they take part in some activities which bring to life the expedition and how Preet prepared for it, including some examples of how she trained and the types of food she consumed.

Finally, Captain Chandi and the Princess will speak to a group of Year 11 and Year 13 students about building resilience and mental wellbeing in all aspects of life.

The Princess has long been an advocate of the huge impact the outdoors can have on our wellbeing and the life skills it nurtures, such as confidence and resilience. She is committed to promoting this to young people, including through her work with organisations such as the Scouts, of which she is joint President.

• Captain Chandi surpassed the previous world record of 907 miles set by fellow soldier Henry Worsley, a retired Lieutenant Colonel, in 2015. The previous longest unsupported solo female distance record was 858 miles posted by Anja Blacha from Germany, skiing from Berkner Island to the South Pole in 2019.

• Landau Forte College Derby is an academy with more than 1100 students ranging from 11 to 19 years old. It provides free full-time education to children living in and around the city of Derby and is rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.

• Captain Chandi ran a school logo competition ahead of her expedition, where she invited schools across the country to design a logo that could feature on her pulk for the duration of her expedition. Simrat Soggi, a Year 10 student at Landau Forte was one of eleven winners.

• In January 2021, Captain Chandi created history by becoming the first woman of colour to reach the South Pole solo and unsupported. She finished the route in 40 days, just short of the female world record of 38 days held by Joanna Davidson of Sweden.

• Captain Chandi is a physiotherapist and serving member of the British Army, currently working as a physiotherapist at a regional rehabilitation unit in Buckinghamshire, providing rehabilitation for injured soldiers and officers.

The King’s message following the bomb attack in Peshawar, Pakistan

2 February 2023

Dear Mr President,

My wife and I were profoundly shocked by the dreadful bomb attack in Peshawar on Monday.  Such acts of incomprehensible brutality, wherever they occur, are a barbaric assault on our shared humanity and our values of understanding and compassion. It is all the more horrific that the victims were in a place of worship during afternoon prayers. We feel most deeply for all those who have been so cruelly bereaved and injured. We recall our visit to Pakistan in 2006 with the greatest fondness, and will hold the people of Pakistan in our special thoughts and prayers as you mourn those you have lost.
