THE PRINCESS OF WALES VISITS LEEDS TO LAUNCH SHAPING US CAMPAIGN TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE UNIQUE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD

Tuesday 31st January 2023

The Princess of Wales will visit Leeds as she launches a major new awareness raising campaign to increase public understanding of the crucial importance of the first five years of a child’s life.

Shaping Us is a new long-term campaign from The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood which aims to transform the issue from one of scientific interest to one of the most strategically important topics of our time. Spearheaded by the Princess of Wales and with support from a range of high-profile figures from the world of media, music, science and sports, Shaping Us will begin with the release of a short film, highlighting how babies and children develop in response to their earliest experiences.

Children and young people’s interests are at the heart of life in Leeds, which has an ambition to be the best place in the UK for children and young people to grow up in. The city launched Child Friendly Leeds in 2012 with the belief that by investing in and supporting children, young people and their families, the whole city will see immediate and longer-term social and economic benefits.

Since then, Leeds City Council has been working with partners across the city to deliver enrichment programmes to improve outcomes and have seen many positive results, including a safe and appropriate reduction in the number of children and young people being taken into local authority care, more young people going into education, employment and training, and better school attendance.

Engagement 1:

The Princess of Wales will bring the Shaping Us campaign to the heart of the community when she visits the iconic Kirkgate Market and meets vendors and members of the public to discuss early childhood.

The Princess will briefly tour the market where she will meet vendors including some who have been in the market for over thirty years.

Her Royal Highness will then join a discussion with vendors and local people about their experiences of early childhood, their reflections on the Shaping Us film and what it might mean to them.

Leeds Kirkgate Market opened in 1857 and is home to hundreds of local independent businesses covering everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, butchers, and fishmongers, to a Community Library, cookery school and Volunteer Centre.

The market receives around 120,000 visitors a week and is much loved by the people of Leeds, providing a place where customers can shop sustainably and where communities can come together to enjoy cultural events and vibrant street food. Its mission is to be an inclusive, successful, and sustainable part of the Leeds city centre offer where independent retailers can innovate and thrive.

Engagement 2:

The Princess will visit the University of Leeds, where she will join students on the Childhood Studies degree programme. Childhood Studies places childhood at the centre of study and uses a multidisciplinary lens to gain a holistic view of the child and childhood.

Students move on to a range of careers following graduation, for example social work, early years settings, therapeutic professions, the civil service, and the charity sector. Students at the University of Leeds have the opportunity to take ‘Discovery modules’ outside of their degree programme and therefore some students present will be undertaking undergraduate degrees in other subjects, for example in education, psychology and sociology.

Her Royal Highness will initially join a lecture on the “Psychological Approaches to Understanding and Supporting Children’s Learning” module. This is a second-year module where students examinecurrent understandings of children’s learning and development, including attachment theory. The module covers key areas of cognitive development as well as social and emotional aspects of learning and examines these within a range of social contexts including learning through play. Students on this programme will consider the factors which may influence development, and the roles of key adults including teachers, teaching assistants, and parents in a child’s development.

The lecture underway when the Princess visits will be focused on attachment theory, specifically how relationships formed in early childhood provide a template for later life and set the foundations for all future learning, behaviour and health.

The Princess will then sit down with a group of students to discuss the “Shaping Us” campaign, how it overlaps with the degree they are undertaking and their perspectives on its potential impact for society.

The Princess of Wales writes an open letter to raise awareness of the importance of early childhood to lifelong outcomes

Saturday 28th January 2023

This week, I am delighted to reveal, The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood will launch a major new awareness raising campaign, highlighting the critical importance the first five years of our lives have on shaping the adults we become.

During our very early childhood, our brains develop at an amazing rate – faster than any other time of our lives. Our experiences, relationships, and surroundings at that young age, shape the rest of our lives.

It is a time where we lay the foundations and building blocks for life. It is when we learn to understand ourselves, understand others and understand the world in which we live.

But as a society, we currently spend much more of our time and energy on later life.

I am absolutely determined that this long-term campaign is going to change that.

It will start by highlighting how we develop during early childhood and why these years matter so much in terms of shaping who we become.

I will be joined by a remarkable group of experts spanning science, research, policy making and front-line practice as well as an exciting group of well-known faces from music, sport and television, to show all of us, why it is in all of our interests to care about this.

We all need to know the critical importance of our early childhood. They really are years like no other in our lives. I urge everyone reading this, to take the opportunity to learn more about this incredible time of life, to think back to your own childhood and how it shaped you, and most importantly, to ask yourselves what you can do to make the world a more supportive and loving place for our children.

Because healthy, happy children shape a healthy, happy future.

THE KING AND QUEEN WILL HOST A RECEPTION AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO CELEBRATE BRITISH EAST AND SOUTH-EAST ASIAN COMMUNITIES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Wednesday 1st February 2023

The King and Queen will host a reception at Buckingham Palace on 1 February to celebrate British East and South-East Asian communities. The Earl of Wessex, the Princess Royal, the Duke of Kent, the Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra will be present.

The guests will include representatives of the Armed Forces, the arts, media, fashion, business, government, finance, healthcare, faith organisations, charities and more.

This reception is taking place shortly after Lunar New Year, also called the Spring Festival, which is celebrated by Chinese, South Korean, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Singaporean, Lao, Thai, Mongolian, Bruneian, Indonesian, Japanese, Cambodian, Filipino and East Timorese communities around the world. The holiday began as a time for feasting and to honour household and heavenly deities, as well as ancestors. This year, Lunar New Year fell on 22nd January 2023.

In February 2022, Their Majesties, when they were Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, visited Chinatown in London to mark Lunar New Year. Welcomed by a display of dancing lions, they visited local shops, organisations and communities, and the then Prince of Wales joined a conversation about hate crime towards the Chinese and wider East and South-East Asian Communities.

Meanwhile, the Duchess of Cornwall visited the Chinese Information and Advice Centre where she met police officers, immigration case workers and clients.

HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN WILL VISIT THE GRENADIER GUARDS AT LILLE BARRACKS

Tuesday 31st January 2023

The Queen, Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, will visit Lille Barracks. During the visit, Her Majesty will meet members of the regiment, present medals and meet families.

In December 2022, the Queen was appointed Colonel of the Grenadier Guards. This will be Her Majesty’s first visit to the Grenadier Guards since her appointment to the role.

Throughout the last five years, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards have been employed across a plethora of military tasks. In 2018 the Battalion was deployed simultaneously to Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan and returned in time to troop the colour at The Queen’s Birthday Parade in 2019.

More recently, Grenadiers have conducted major training exercises in Belize, the Falkland Islands, Kenya and Thailand. The battalion is now part of the 4th Light Brigade Combat Team and has elements deployed to Iraq to provide protection to the international coalition deployed under Op INHERENT RESOLVE.

Members of The King’s Company (Grenadier Guards) returned from this deployment in September 2022 to provide the bearer party for the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Looking ahead into 2023, the battalion is very much looking forward to supporting state ceremonial duties in the coming months and undertaking a major training exercise in Kenya in the autumn.

The 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, later known as the Grenadier Guards, have served the sovereign and the nation in an unbroken thread for more than three and a half centuries. They have fought in every major conflict and been awarded 78 honorary distinctions (commonly known as battle honours), forty-five of which appear on their regimental colours (flags).

In their ceremonial role Grenadier Guardsmen are recognised on parade by a white plume on the left side of their bearskin caps; their uniforms bearing symbols of a grenade ‘fired proper’ and buttons arranged singly. Their regimental motto is: Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense – the motto of the Order of the Garter – “Shame on him who thinks evil of it”.

THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES WILL VISIT WINDSOR FOODSHARE

Thursday 26th January 2023

The Prince and Princess of Wales will visit Windsor Foodshare to hear more about the support that the organisation provides to individuals and families living in the local area, before helping volunteers to sort food donations and prepare packages for the charity’s clients to collect later that day.

Marking its tenth anniversary later this year, Windsor Foodshare provides short-term weekly help in the form of food parcels containing ambient foods, bread, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables to any local household where there is a likelihood of an individual or family going hungry due to a lack of funds. Toiletries and cleaning products are also provided on a monthly basis. The organisation, which forms part of Windsor Christian Action, is completely reliant on monetary and food donations from individuals, businesses and local retail outlets.

Upon arrival, the Prince and Princess will meet with those involved in running the service to learn more about the support they provide to those in need, and about the charity’s founding principles which centre around treating everyone as equals and making no judgements on their circumstances.

Their Royal Highnesses will also hear about the impact that the rising cost of living has had on the demand for the service, which operates on a referral basis from a variety of sources such as schools, doctors, social services, churches and community wardens. In 2022 the charity helped to feed over 7,000 local residents, an increase of 18% from the previous year’s support, meaning that on average 150 people receive food per week from Windsor Foodshare.

The organisation also runs a home delivery service for people with mobility requirements and those who do not have access to transport.

The Advisory Group will meet with Her Royal Highness for the first time at Windsor Castle on Wednesday 25th January. They will go on to support the Princess and the centre as work is accelerated to promote the fundamental importance of the first five years of a child’s life.

The group will support the delivery of the centre’s work in commissioning new research, learning from best practice in the UK and globally, and raising awareness of the extraordinary impact the first five years of life have on future outcomes.

Advisory Group members have been chosen for their deep expertise in a range of areas including neuroscience, psychology, perinatal psychiatry, early years services and policy development.

Amanda Berry, Chief Executive of The Royal Foundation said:”Working with such an eminent group of people is an absolute privilege. I know their advice and experience is hugely valued by the Princess, and the whole Centre for Early Childhood team, as we continue to drive awareness of, and action on, the transformative impact of the early years.

“The Advisory Group’s support in our key areas of research, collaboration and awareness raising will be invaluable and I look forward to working closely with them to make a difference for generations to come.”

Several of those involved have already played a pivotal role in the work the Princess of Wales has been pursuing for more than a decade in this field, helping her to shape her work on the issue and adding to her determination to help change the way people think about early childhood.

The appointment of the Advisory Group comes as the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood appoints Christian Guy as Centre Director.

HIS MAJESTY THE KING WILL VISIT THE AFRICA CENTRE

Thursday 26th January 2023

The King will visit The Africa Centre, where His Majesty will hear about the role the Africa Centre plays in connecting Africans in the UK to the global diaspora on key issues. His Majesty will view Our Story: Africa’s Climate. This art exhibition by emerging artists illustrates the effects climate change is having in Africa. His Majesty will also tour the centre’s recently launched new premises and meet The Africa Centre trustees, members of staff and invited guests.

The Africa Centre is a UK based charity which has been championing the cause for Africa and its diaspora since its formation in 1961. With an original remit to foster non-governmental relations between newly independent Africa and Britain, The Africa Centre’s mission today is to educate, connect, and advocate for Africa and its global diaspora. It is a ‘home away from home’ for Africans in the UK and a warm and welcoming space offering authentic African heritage and cultural experiences to anyone with an interest in Africa. Its mission rests on Five Pillars of activity: Culture, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Community, and Intellectual Leadership.

Originally located on King Street in Covent Garden for over five decades, The Africa Centre launched its new headquarters in Southwark in June 2022. The charity’s new flagship building is a 1960s former office block that has been beautifully transformed into a new home for contemporary African culture and heritage. It houses a pan-African restaurant on the ground floor, a bar on the first, art gallery on the second, and a temporary event space on the third floor. The third and fourth floors will be fully completed in a later second phase after additional funding has been secured.

Our Story: Africa’s Climate Exhibition (10th November 2022 – 13th February 2023) A group exhibition made up of works from emerging African artists from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania. It seeks to highlight the impact of the climate emergency in Africa through photography, illustration, and collage. The ramifications of the exhaustion of Africa’s natural resources have made themselves ever more present across the years. In 2020 alone we saw life-threatening floods in Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, and other East African countries. Despite contributing the least to global warming, Africa is currently most vulnerable to its dangers.

The exhibition consists of four artists (Antoinette Oni, Chioma Ince, Mihayo Kallaye and Ngadi Smart) and is curated by Haj Fanta. Acting as a cultural hub, The Africa Centre is highlighting the urgency of this issue and the environmental and economic inequality around its impact on ordinary Africans. Through its programming it hopes to build and foster critical dialogue on how Africa can build a sustainable future.
