Tuesday 29th November 2022

Her Majesty The Queen will host a reception to raise awareness of violence against women and girls as part of the UN 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

This reception, taking place at Buckingham Palace during the UN 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, is a high watermark of Her Majesty’s work in the area, seeing the Queen host a major reception and make a significant speech on a subject about which she cares passionately.

The reception will be attended by the Countess of Wessex, Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan and Her Royal Highness The Crown Princess of Denmark.

The c.300 guests include survivors of violence against women and girls, their families, politicians and charities working in the area (including representatives from SafeLives, Women’s Aid and Refuge). Ambassadors for the cause will include the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Baroness Scotland, Melanie Brown, Fiona Bruce, Yalda Hakim, Lorraine Kelly, Emma Barnett, Zara McDermott and Hayley Atwell.

Her Majesty has previously emphasized that men are victims of violence too and has met many male survivors.

THE QUEEN WILL VISIT BARNARDO’S TO DELIVER PADDINGTONS AND TEDDY BEARS LEFT AT ROYAL RESIDENCES AS TRIBUTES TO QUEEN ELIZABETH II

Thursday 24th November 2022

The Queen will attend a special teddy bears picnic at a Barnardo’s Nursery in Bow on Thursday 24th November. During the visit, Her Majesty will personally deliver Paddingtons and other cuddly toys that were left as tributes to Queen Elizabeth II at royal residences to children supported by the charity.

In 2016, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed the patronage of Barnardo’s to the then Duchess of Cornwall.

Her Majesty will join children supported by Bow Nursery and Barnardo’s staff for the picnic, alongside key characters from the world of Paddington. Paddington film cast members Hugh Bonneville and Madeleine Harris, who play Mr Brown and Judy Brown respectively, and Paddington author Michael Bond’s daughter Karen Jankel, for whom the original stories were written, will come together for marmalade sandwiches on the day.

Today, The Royal Parks, Buckingham Palace and Barnardo’s have released a video update charting the journey of the bears so far from the Royal Parks to the launderette to the royal residences, where they are currently being looked after, alongside some photographs of the bears enjoying their stay at Buckingham Palace and Clarence House.

It was announced last month that over 1,000 Paddingtons and teddy bears left as tributes in London and Windsor would be donated to Barnardo’s children’s services. The teddy bears have all been professionally cleaned ahead of the delivery, with those being presented by Her Majesty on Thursday to remain with children at the Bow Nursery, while others will be distributed to children supported by Barnardo’s across the country.

Her Majesty will arrive at Barnardo’s in a convoy of electric taxis which will transport the teddy bears from Clarence House and Buckingham Palace. The taxis will be driven by representatives of the London Taxi Drivers’ Charity for Children, of which the then Duchess of Cornwall become patron in 2010.

At Bow Nursery, the Queen will be met on arrival by Barnardo’s CEO, Lynn Perry MBE, and Chair of Trustees John Bartlett before being shown around by Team Manager Shamima Ahmed. At a special teddy bears picnic, Her Majesty will then present children supported by the nursery with their bears. As part of the teddy bears picnic celebration, Hugh Bonneville will read the story ‘Paddington Takes A Bath’ to the children and guests, reflective of the bears’ journey so far.

Those involved in the project hope the teddy bears will be much loved for many years to come by children supported by Barnardo’s, whilst understanding the story behind the bears and how they came to be donated.

The Paddington Project

Buckingham Palace, the Royal Parks and Barnardo’s children’s charity announced on 18th October that over 1,000 Paddingtons and teddy bears left in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II outside royal residences in London and Windsor would be donated to Barnardo’s children’s services. The teddy bears have all been professionally cleaned before being delivered and are currently being well looked after at Buckingham Palace and Clarence House ahead of their journey to Bow next week.

To mark the announcement of the donation, a new photograph was released in October of the Queen with some of the hundreds of Paddingtons and teddy bears that are being gifted to the children’s charity. The photograph was taken in the Morning Room at Clarence House on Thursday 13th October 2022, the 64th anniversary of the publication of the first Paddington bear book.

Thousands of tributes – from flowers to teddy bears – were left outside royal residences in London and Windsor following Queen Elizabeth II’s death on Thursday 8th September. In central London, many were left at the two official tributes areas in The Green Park and Hyde Park. Later in September, the Royal Parks charity, with the help of Shire horses and almost 200 volunteers, began sensitively clearing the tribute gardens. The teddy bears collected during this process have joined those left as tributes on the Long Walk outside Windsor Castle in being donated to Barnardo’s children’s services.

The Princess of Wales to Visit Reading Ukrainian Community Centre

THE PRINCESS OF WALES WILL VISIT READING UKRAINIAN COMMUNITY CENTRE

Thursday 17th November 2022

The Princess of Wales will visit Reading Ukrainian Community Centre on Thursday 17th November to meet displaced Ukrainian families and hear about the support the Centre is providing to those arriving in the UK as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.

Reading Ukrainian Community Centre houses the Berkshire branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB), the largest representative body for Ukrainians and those of Ukrainian descent in the UK.

Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine earlier this year, the Community Centre has pivoted its activities to support Ukrainians arriving in the UK, whilst also delivering medical equipment and humanitarian aid to those on the frontline. Work being carried out for the Ukrainian community in Reading has included the delivery of educational classes for children, and the implementation of weekly coffee mornings at the centre to provide practical advice and support around topics such as employment and housing. The sessions also help to establish and solidify social connections and a sense of community, which have been proven to be a vital foundation for positive mental wellbeing.

During her visit, the Princess will hear more from the centre’s volunteers about how they have adapted their services in recent months, and how this has helped displaced families as they settle into life in the UK. Her Royal Highness will also meet with families who are supported by the centre to hear their stories, before joining children taking part in an art session. Delivered on a monthly basis, the art workshops help to provide a way for the children to have fun, build friendships and express their emotions and experiences through a creative outlet.

Her Royal Highness’ visit follows a virtual roundtable meeting, convened by the Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales, which took place last week to provide advice and share best practice to help support the First Lady of Ukraine’s mental health strategy, which was announced in August to address the impact the ongoing conflict is having upon the mental wellbeing of Ukrainians.

Bringing together experts and individuals working in the mental health sector in the UK, alongside representatives from the office of the First Lady’s and the Royal Foundation, the meeting covered a range of topics including learnings from the UK on changing conversations and reducing stigma on a national level, and lessons from the delivery of support for specific groups such as children and veterans. The group also discussed the mental health support currently available for Ukrainians living in the UK.

The roundtable follows several visits over the past six months by the Prince and Princess of Wales which have highlighted the plight of people in Ukraine and the generous support that communities and organisations across the UK have offered in response. The Royal Foundation will continue to provide advice and support for the First Lady’s work on mental health over the coming months.

THE PRINCE OF WALES WILL VISIT RAF CONINGSBY

Grantham, UK

Friday 18th November 2022

The Prince of Wales, Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Coningsby, will visit the base to learn about future technological innovations and open a new boxing club.

During the visit, His Royal Highness will spend time in the Air Traffic Control Centre to hear about ‘Project Marshall’, a multi-billion-pound equipment upgrade programme of air traffic control radar services across Lincolnshire. Whilst in the centre, His Royal Highness will meet staff and engage with new radar displays and control systems that have been put in place to improve efficiency and elevate data sharing.

Following this, the Prince will visit the BAE Systems Typhoon Maintenance Facility (TMF). When His Royal Highness is in TMF, he will meet maintenance staff and hear about the transformative technologies which are currently being explored by the Royal Air Force and BAE Systems. The new technologies include exoskeletons and VR headsets, which will allow jet support to be carried out in a smarter and faster way. In addition, there is also technology that is used to identify any structural issues on objects such as fighter jets and drones to further increase the speed of aircraft maintenance and availability of front-line Typhoon fighter jets.

Finally, the Prince will visit and officially open the new RAF Coningsby Boxing Club. The club is situated in the heart of the RAF base and creates a central place where personnel can go to exercise and box. The new boxing club is the extension of a popular provision of boxing coaching during the pandemic. His Royal Highness will see how the new facility will benefit staff’s wellbeing as well as meet other sports teams at RAF Coningsby.

Before his departure, the Prince will carry out a short walkabout with RAF families who live locally.

At the reception, Her Majesty will recognise young and talented writers from across the Commonwealth and pay tribute to the power of literacy and language in bringing people together in a speech to the assembled guests.

Following Her Majesty’s speech, extracts from the winning pieces will be read by Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) Ambassadors including Alexandra Burke, Ayesha Dharker and Geri Horner. RCS Ambassador Gyles Brandreth will act as compère for the afternoon’s events, and closing remarks will be given by Dr Linda Yueh, Executive Chair of the Royal Commonwealth Society.

The Queen Consort will also meet three previous winners and runners-up from 2020 and 2021, who were not able to attend an awards ceremony previously due to Covid restrictions.

Her Majesty will make a speech before presenting awards to this year’s winners. Extracts from the essays of each winner will then be read out by the RCS Ambassadors. The winners and runners-up are aged between 13-17 years old and will travel from New Zealand, Australia, India and the UK to be presented with their certificates by the Queen Consort.

The final judging decision was taken by an expert panel, which included bestselling author Dame Susan Hill DBE; 2022 Booker Prize winner, Shehan Karunatilaka; Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry 2014 winner, Imtiaz Dharker; Head of Research for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Rev Dr Paul Edmondson; and 2022 Commonwealth Short Story Prize winner from eSwatini, Ntsika Kota.

The reception will be attended by the award winners and their families, final panel judges and notable literary figures from across the Commonwealth.

The winners and runner ups:

Sawooly Li, Senior Winner, 17, New Zealand

Sawooly Li is a 12th grade student from Rangitoto College in New Zealand. Reading and writing have always been second nature for her – a way of expressing visions, thoughts, and emotions. She loves drawing inspiration and learning from other great writers and their works. Both reading and writing are things which Sawooly aspires to continue far, far, into the future.

Madeleine Wood, Junior Winner, 14, Australia

Madeleine is 14 years old and lives in Melbourne, Australia. She loves travelling, particularly through Europe, and enjoys visiting the museums, historical landmarks and cities in each country. It is from these experiences that she gained a love for ancient, medieval, and renaissance history. She is also an avid reader, plays the violin and spends much of her time playing basketball or swimming.

Amaal Fawzi, Senior Runner-up, 17, United Kingdom

Amaal Fawzi was born in Egypt, raised in Lebanon, and now lives in East London. Most of the poetry and prose she likes to write is concerned with culture and identity. Her years in Lebanon formed the majority of her character and cultural experiences, so learning to interact with that in the UK has been a very interesting season. It makes for a lot of writing material, and she’d say that the way she writes is always personal and drawn somehow from her own life.

Maulika Pandey, Junior Runner-up, 13, India

Maulika has always enjoyed writing since she was a child as she feels writing gives her the power to express her feelings in a creative way. Maulika also enjoys sketching and playing the guitar. Basketball is her favourite sport. She aspires to be a successful entrepreneur but will continue writing in the future. She is a dedicated advocate for anti-bullying and body positivity.
