STATE VISIT BY THE EMPEROR AND EMPRESS OF JAPAN

Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress of Japan have accepted an invitation from His Majesty The King to pay a state visit to the United Kingdom in late June 2024.

The King and Queen will host the state visit at Buckingham Palace.

The King visited Japan on five occasions as Prince of Wales: His Majesty attended the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito in 2019 and Emperor Akihito in 1990 and visited on three other occasions, in 2008, 1986 and 1970. The King was accompanied by the Queen, then Duchess of Cornwall, for the visit in 2008.

The Emperor and Empress of Japan attended the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. This was Their Majesties’ first overseas trip after the Emperor’s enthronement.

The Emperor of Japan attended the reception hosted by the King for heads of state and official overseas guests at Buckingham Palace on 18th September 2022, the evening before the state funeral.

The planned state visit to the United Kingdom in Spring 2020 by the Emperor and Empress of Japan was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Further details of the state visit programme will be announced in due course.
