THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF EDINBURGH, ON BEHALF OF HIS MAJESTY THE KING, WILL ATTEND A PARADE AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO COMMEMORATE THE 120TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ENTENTE CORDIALE

Monday 8th April 2024

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, on behalf of the King, accompanied by the UK Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Patrick Sanders, French Chief of the Army Staff, General Pierre Schill and the French Ambassador to the UK, Her Excellency Hélène Duchêne, will attend a parade to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale.

The Entente Cordiale was a diplomatic agreement signed on 8th April 1904 between Britain and France, laying the groundwork for the two nations’ cooperation during World War I.

The event on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace will mark the first time a non-Commonwealth Country, France, has taken part in the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Thirty-two members of the Gendarmerie’s Garde Républicaine and 40 Guardsmen from the Scots Guards will be seen together on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, alongside the French Ambassador, will inspect the French and British troops.

The unprecedented appearance by French personnel in the King’s Guard Change ceremony forms part of a longer-term programme of joint UK-French activity that celebrates the two nations’ historic military and diplomatic ties in 2024.

In parallel to events in London, the Elysée Palace in Paris will host British personnel in a similar guard ceremony that has been arranged specially to mark the Entente Cordiale anniversary.

Sixteen soldiers from Number 7 Company Coldstream Guards will join troops from 1er Régiment de la Garde Républicaine to provide the Presidential Guard outside the Elysée Palace in what will be the first ever example of a foreign state guarding the French presidential residence. They will be accompanied by two musicians from the British Army’s Household Division Bands.

The troops will be inspected in the courtyard of the Elysée Palace by President Macron.

The events of 8th April 2024 are the focal point of a year-long programme of joint UK-French military activity that celebrates defence ties between the two nations.

This includes military sporting events, participation in each other’s air shows and major events in Normandy this June to commemorate the heroic service of Allied veterans who fought to liberate France from World War II Germany.

Tuesday 26th March 2024

The Queen will host a reception at Clarence House with authors, neuroscientists, members of the literary community and representatives from The Queen’s Reading Room to mark the findings of a pioneering new research study commissioned by The Queen’s Reading Room.

The Queen’s Reading Room commissioned their first qualitative and quantitative research, as well as neuroscientific research to determine whether there is a link between reading fiction and wellbeing. The neuroscientific study, which will be released on 27th March 2024, suggests that reading for just five minutes can reduce stress, improve concentration and help people to feel more connected.

During the reception, Her Majesty will meet guests involved in the charity’s research project, including academics and independent neuroscientists who have led the study, as well as authors, actors and literary advocates who have contributed to The Queen’s Reading Room Podcast and Festival.

THE QUEEN WILL VISIT SHREWSBURY, SHROPSHIRE

Wednesday 27th March 2024

Engagement 1:

Her Majesty The Queen will visit Shrewsbury Farmers’ Market, Town Square, Shrewsbury.

The Queen will arrive at Shrewsbury Farmers’ Market where the Lord Lieutenant, Anna Tuner, will introduce Her Majesty to dignitaries before presenting Jenny and Stuart Jones who organise the monthly market. The Queen will tour the market including food, artisan, jewellery and craft stalls, while the Shrewsbury Brass band plays.

Her Majesty will then move to the Old Market Hall where she will sign the visitor’s book (also signed by Queen Elizabeth II in 1952) before meeting members of the local BeeKeepers’ Association.

Shrewsbury Farmers Market has been held in The Square for almost 20 years and has grown into one of the best markets in the area with around forty traders regularly setting up stall on the first Friday of the month. The market includes many gold award winning producers and an international award winner – Tootsweets Confectionery from Shrewsbury.

The stalls are very diverse and include street food from around the world. The emphasis is on natural ingredients, artisan crafts, and local food produce.

Engagement 2:

Her Majesty The Queen will visit the recently restored Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings, before meeting local volunteer groups including the Shrewsbury Food Hub, Shrewsbury Interfaith Forum, Save our Shropshire and Shropshire Supports Refugees.

The Shrewsbury Flax-mill Maltings site is an Historic England flagship heritage regeneration project, and home to eight listed buildings. Historic England worked with partners and funders to renovate the site and manage the buildings and ongoing restoration whilst a trading company looked after the day-to-day visitor experience.

The Queen will tour the restored site before meeting volunteers from local groups such as ‘The Repair Café’ who will be conducting a mini repair session; Shrewsbury Food Hub, Shrewsbury Interfaith Forum, Save Our Shropshire, and Shropshire Supports Refugees.

At the conclusion of the visit, Her Majesty will meet volunteers from the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS), Shropshire Good Neighbours Service, before the Queen unveils a plaque to mark her visit.

Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings is the world’s first iron-framed building (built 1796-1797) and is the forerunner to the modern-day skyscraper.

In 2022, 225 years after the Mill originally opened, the site opened to the public, allowing visitors to learn more about its incredible role in the Industrial Revolution and the great contribution Shrewsbury and the Midlands have made to the world in manufacturing and innovation.

Homewards Activator, Homebase, will also be involved in the conversation, sharing their pledge of support to ensure that all Homewards innovative housing projects feel like home.

Finally, Prince William will join a Homewards Sheffield Local Coalition meeting in the city’s centre. Local Coalitions have been convened in each of the six Homewards locations to create and drive forward a Local Action Plan to demonstrate that it is possible to end homelessness in their area.

Engagement 1:

THE PRINCE OF WALES WILL VISIT HAMMERSMITH AND FULHAM ONSIDE YOUTH ZONE

London

Thursday 14th March 2024

The Prince of Wales will visit WEST, the new OnSide Youth Zone in Hammersmith and Fulham, to see the brand-new purpose-built facilities that will soon be available to young people in the area.

Named WEST (standing for ‘Where Everyone Sticks Together’) by local young people, the new Youth Zone will be staffed by skilled and dedicated youth workers who will support young people from across west London to develop the skills and confidence they need to achieve their dreams.

WEST Youth Zone is a newly formed local independent charity with facilities including a sports hall, fitness suite, indoor climbing wall, teaching kitchen, performing arts studio and café which will serve hot nutritious meals costing no more than £1. It will be part of an innovative education hub in the White City area of west London, developed by the education charity, Ark, and Hammersmith and Fulham Council, known as EdCity, which will also include a new school, nursery, adult education centre and affordable housing.

WEST has been developed by OnSide, a national youth centre charity whose mission is to empower young people to lead positive, fulfilling lives by providing access to state-of-the-art spaces and exceptional, life-changing youth work in areas where they are needed the most. There are fourteen Youth Zones in the national OnSide network including in Bolton, Manchester, Wigan and across London, with seven more set to open over the next two years in places such as Bristol, Grimsby, Essex and Preston.

In 2021, the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited OnSide’s Wolverhampton Youth Zone, ‘The Way’.

During his visit, the Prince will spend time speaking to pupils from Ark White City primary school and WEST’s Young People’s Development Group who were involved in shaping the design and facilities in the new centre, hearing why WEST will be transformative for young people living locally. His Royal Highness will then begin a tour of the Youth Zone, meeting young people using the four- court indoor sports hall before seeing the teaching kitchen which is used to support the development of cooking skills.

Finally, the Prince will join a gathering of young people who have come together to celebrate the launch of the new Youth Zone with a plaque unveiling.

His Royal Highness’ visit will mark the first time young people have access to the Youth Zone, which will officially open seven days a week on 21 April.
