PRINCE HARRY AND MS. MEGHAN MARKLE TO VISIT BIRMINGHAM

Birmingham

Thursday 8th March, 2018

Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle will visit Birmingham on Thursday 8th March to learn more about the work of two projects which support young people from the local community.

Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will firstly attend an event at Millennium Point to celebrate International Women’s Day, which aims to inspire the next generation of young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). Hosted by social enterprise Stemettes, the event will bring together female students from local secondary schools and include interactive activities, a panel discussion, speed networking opportunities with local businesses, and information on work experience, apprenticeships, A-level choices, and university degrees in STEM. Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will join the young women as they take part in building apps and touchpads, before hearing more about their motivations to pursue STEM subjects.

Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will then visit Nechells Wellbeing Centre to join Birmingham’s Coach Core apprentices as they take part in a training masterclass led by Create Development. The Coach Core apprenticeship scheme was designed by The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to train young people aged 16 – 24 with limited opportunities to become sports coaches and mentors within their communities. During the year-long apprenticeship, which now operates in ten cities across the UK, the apprentices learn technical sport skills alongside an inclusive and holistic approach to coaching, with an emphasis on employability and mentoring skills. Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will chat to the apprentices about their experiences of the programme – which launched in Birmingham in March 2017 – before joining them in the sports hall as they deliver practice training sessions.

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE WILL VISIT RAF CONINGSBY

RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire

Wednesday 7th March, 2018

The Duke of Cambridge will visit Royal Air Force Coningsby on Wednesday 7th March. The Duke will meet RAF personnel who operate Typhoon multi-role fighters, and will see first-hand how the RAF base is engaging local schoolchildren in the science behind its work.

RAF Coningsby is home to two Front Line Squadrons, alongside an Operational Training Squadron and a Test and Evaluation Squadron. A detachment from the Typhoon Force is currently deployed to the Middle East in the fight against Daesh.

The Duke will visit 29 Squadron, which trains new Typhoon pilots as well as providing refresher training to pilots who are returning to fly the Typhoon after completing other duties. There The Duke will view one of the world-class multi-role fighters, before speaking to RAF crew who maintain and fly the aircraft. The Duke will also meet trainee Typhoon pilots, who will be the future of the RAF.

Currently Typhoon Force personnel are involved in operations over Iraq and Syria, whilst also policing the skies of the UK and the Falkland Islands, manning NATO Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) operations at RAF Coningsby and Mount Pleasant Airfield. Last summer, a detachment from RAF Coningsby provided QRA in Romania.

Closer to home, RAF Coningsby is also home to a brand new Engagement Centre for the local community – the first of its kind at an RAF base. The centre aims to engage the local community in RAF Coningsby’s past as well as inspiring its future.

His Royal Highness will first visit the Heritage Centre, which aims to tell the story of RAF Coningsby since it initially opened in March 1941. During World War II, the base was a bomber station hosting various types including the Lancasters of No 617 Squadron. After the war it continued as a bomber station equipped with Canberras and Avro Vulcans, before becoming a fast jet station in the late 1960s.

The Duke, who is Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Coningsby, will then join local schoolchildren in the new STEM classroom, which provides an inspiring location to engage young people in the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

His Royal Highness will join children as they take part in a session to design a mechanism to drop an egg from a height, giving them an introduction to the physics behind real-life RAF situations. The Duke will then observe the children giving live demonstrations of their
mechanisms, before officially opening the Engagement Centre.

Finally, The Duke will join representatives from across RAF Coningsby for a working lunch in the Officers’ Mess. The Duke will meet representatives from all of the squadrons to discuss their roles and present operations, along with members of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, also based at RAF Coningsby, of which he is Patron.

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE TO INTRODUCE NEW WORKPLACE MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVES

Unilever House, London

Thursday 1st March, 2018

The Duke of Cambridge will highlight the importance of mental wellbeing at work and introduce new Heads Together workplace mental health initiatives at the Workplace
Wellbeing Conference at Unilever House on Thursday 1st March.

His Royal Highness will firstly take part in a roundtable discussion about the current workplace mental health landscape with senior business leaders. Paul Farmer, the Chief Executive of Mind, will discuss recent research conducted by the charity into the issue of workplace mental health, and participants will share their perspectives and experiences in addressing it. The Duke will then attend the Workplace Wellbeing Conference where he will introduce new initiatives developed and supported by Heads Together, Mind, Unilever and other partner organisations. His Royal Highness will also highlight the importance of senior leadership in ensuring the support and take up of mental health policies in the workplace, and the issues that still exist due to stigma and lack of access to the right resources.

The new workplace mental health initiatives consist of a ‘Mental Health at Work’ website and online training that will aim to equip employees and managers with tools, training and a good understanding of mental wellbeing in order to create a healthy and supportive working environment. This website will bring together curated online resources enabling employers to access workplace mental health and online training, including specific training for Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs), for whom it is often more difficult to provide employee mental health support.

Over 80% of the UK’s working age (16-64) population in employment and 1 in 6 British workers are affected by mental health issues. Research commissioned by Mind at the end of 2017 identified that stigma is the main barrier to accessing mental health information in the workplace environment, and that only a third of respondents had successfully found the mental health resources online that they needed.

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE WILL VISIT FAMILY LINKS

Pegasus Primary School, Oxford

Tuesday 6th March, 2018

The Duchess of Cambridge will visit Pegasus Primary School in Oxford on Tuesday 6th March to learn more about the work of the charity Family Links. Her Royal Highness will see how Family Links works closely with schools nationwide to support both children and parents with their emotional health and wellbeing, with an emphasis on early intervention.

Family Links works to empower children, parents, families, schools and workplaces to prioritise positive emotional health, by delivering innovative, high quality training to health and social care services, third sector organisations, schools and universities. The charity’s Nurturing Programme, which underpins all of their work, is designed to provide adults and children with the understanding, skills and ability to lead emotionally healthy lives, build resilience, empathy, self-esteem and support positive relationships.

At Pegasus Primary School, Family Links completely integrates emotional health support into children’s education, with the entire family supported through a range of workshops and activity sessions. Parents are offered the opportunity to attend a ten-week parenting programme, and children have weekly circle times throughout the school year. This is all underpinned by a whole school approach where everyone from the caretaker to the Headteacher is trained in the Family Links approach.

During the visit, The Duchess will meet parents to hear more about how their families have overcome challenges with the support of Family Links. Her Royal Highness will also join a Year Two class during ‘Circle Time’, an activity session which encourages pupils to share their thoughts on a range of topics, including how to support a classmate if they are being bullied, or how to cope with a stressful situation.

Finally, The Duchess will attend a roundtable discussion with Family Links on the importance of supporting families during a child’s early years.

Royals to Feature in New Brief Encounters Exhibition

It’s not often you will see the likes of Queen Elizabeth II, Charles Prince of Wales, Zara Tindall, Kevin McCloud, Alex James, Raymond Blanc, Fiona Fullerton, James may, Jilly Cooper, (the list goes on), in one place at any one time.

You will soon.

The newly renovated Goods Shed in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, has secured a six week exhibition by the renowned Cotswold based photographer, Mark Fairhurst.

This is the first time his photographic portraits are to be on show. The body of work was created over a period of years and features some of the most recognised people on the planet. “Some, alas, are no longer with us” said Mark, who has had his images seen in various magazines around the world. “It can be quite daunting photographing someone you may have seen on the world’s stage. You are not always given much time to create an image that brings something out of your subject that is a little different from what has been done before”

Mark was once told that his photo session was the best therapy anyone could ask for. He is also a published artist having produced illustrations for Tour de France winner Chris Froome and Ferrari.

The exhibition opens on 1st April, and entry is free…

Queen to Visit Royal Academy of Arts

THE QUEEN TO VISIT LONDON FASHION WEEK

Tuesday 20th February, 2018

Her Majesty will visit London Fashion Week on Tuesday 20th February to present the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design.

The Award, initiated in recognition of the role the fashion industry plays in society and diplomacy, will be awarded annually to an emerging British fashion designer who hows exceptional talent and originality, whilst demonstrating value to the community and/or strong sustainable policies.

The first recipient of the Award is British fashion designer Richard Quinn.

Richard Quinn is an emerging talent within the United Kingdom who has been recognised for his exceptional prints. Already supplying leading stores around the world, Richard’s ethos of collaboration goes beyond his design business to include the creation of a print studio which offers high quality, accessible services to students and his peer group of emerging designers.

For the past two years Miss Angela Kelly, Personal Advisor to Her Majesty (The Queen’s Wardrobe), has been working on designing an award which The Queen wanted to give in recognition of emerging British fashion talent. The Award, in the name of Queen Elizabeth II, aims to provide continuing recognition of the cultural and trade role the British design and fashion industry has played, and continues to play, throughout Her Majesty’s reign.

Her Majesty will be greeted upon arrival at London Fashion Week by Caroline Rush CBE, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council (BFC). The Queen will tour the showrooms to view display and meet designers, including the ‘New Gen’ group – a BFC initiative that supports emerging talent. Her Majesty will view Richard Quinn’s runway show before presenting him with The Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design.

Each year a designer will be selected by the BFC, in collaboration with the Royal Household to be recognised by this Award which will be presented annually by a Member of the Royal Family.

The Award, designed by Angela Kelly, inspired by the Queen Elizabeth rose, has been hand-produced by Lucy Price at Bauhinia Studios in Birmingham’s famous jewellery quarter.

Personal Papers of the Hanoverian Kings Revealed

Georgian Papers Programme

PERSONAL PAPERS REVEAL PRIVATE LIVES OF THE HANOVARIANS

Personal papers of the Hanoverian Kings and their consorts, publicly available for the first time, offer a unique glimpse into the private thoughts and feelings of 18th and 19th century monarchy.

In Phase III of the Georgian Papers Programme, a further 10,000 pages of material from the later Georgian period have been digitally scanned and published online, available free for anyone to access at www.royalcollection.org.uk/georgianpapers. This follows on from the 50,000 pages released in two phases since its launch, making a total of 60,000 pages publically accessible so far.

Papers released offer an unprecedented insight into the mind of William IV, whose reign is often overshadowed by the unprecedented political change of the time. William IV’s personal papers include his own report of a visit to New York when under siege in the American War of Independence and a letter to his father George III in which he reflects on the ‘terrible course of life’ led by his brother The Prince of Wales. Also included is his last will and testament, detailing the money and effects he left to both his wife Queen Adelaide and the children born from his long relationship with the actress Mrs Jordan.

The papers also include letters from George III about his long bouts of illness and a deeply personal account in his own hand of The King and Queen’s ‘blow’ and ‘distress’ following the death of their beloved son Octavius. Letters between Queen Charlotte and her children include a lengthy plea from the then Prince of Wales for The Queen’s support for a Regency.

Queen Charlotte’s diary offers detailed accounts of the family’s day to day life, including significant events such as the family’s first public outing following George III’s recovery from his first bout of illness. Queen Charlotte writes, ‘…the Kgs first appearance at a Public entertainment since His Illness, & His reception was beyond the possibility of my pen to express, but such as must have convinced Him of the greatest loyalty of His Subjects.’

The papers include the ‘commonplace books’ of Lady Augusta Murray, whose marriage to George III’s son, Prince Augustus Frederick, was quickly declared illegitimate. The scrapbooks of quotations, writings and speeches offer a previously unseen insight into the feelings of the woman who bore him two children.

The Georgian Papers Programme (GPP) is a partnership between Royal Collection Trust, lead academic partner King’s College London and international institutions, including primary U.S. partners the Omohundro Institute of Early American History & Culture and William & Mary, as well as other key U.S. organisations such as the Library of Congress, Mount Vernon and the Sons of the American Revolution.

With Her Majesty’s full authority, the project is part of Royal Collection Trust’s objective to increase public access to and understanding of primary source material held in the collection. It follows the success of the digitisation of Queen Victoria’s journals in 2012, which has encouraged wide public appreciation.

The Georgian Papers Programme’s academic partners have established a series of more than 50 visiting postdoctoral, graduate and undergraduate fellowships and five visiting professorships, based at the Royal Archives to support the programme over the coming years.

Since 1912, the papers have been stored, with restricted physical access, within the Royal Archives in Windsor Castle’s Round Tower. In 2016 the Round Tower floor was refitted to allow the digitisation, cataloguing and conservation work for the Georgian Papers Programme to begin. Further refurbishments created a new research room, open five days a week, increasing capacity to support external research from 500 hours a year to 6000 hours a year, a twelve-fold increase.

London

Wednesday 28th February, 2018

The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of the National Portrait Gallery, will visit the exhibition Victorian Giants: The Birth of Art Photography. Forming the Gallery’s first Patron’s Trail, Her Royal Highness has selected images from the exhibition for which she has written personal captions that will be displayed alongside the photographs. The Duchess of Cambridge has also written a foreword to the exhibition catalogue (see below). On the 28th February, Her Royal Highness will take a tour of the exhibition and then meet lenders and supporters in the Gallery’s Ondaatje Wing Main Hall.

The exhibition Victorian Giants: The Birth of Art Photography will show together for the first time portraits by Oscar Rejlander, Lewis Carroll, Julia Margaret Cameron and Lady Clementina Hawarden. These four artists would come to embody the very best in photography of the era, experimenting with new approaches to picture making, and shaping attitudes to the medium that have informed artistic practice ever since. The exhibition explores the birth of art photography in England and provides a fresh perspective on one of photography’s formative periods.

The Duchess has been Patron of the National Portrait Gallery since 2012.

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE WILL LAUNCH NURSING NOW CAMPAIGN

St Thomas’ Hospital, London

Tuesday 27th February, 2018

The Duchess of Cambridge will visit St Thomas’ Hospital on Tuesday 27th February to officially launch a campaign to promote nursing worldwide. Her Royal Highness will visit a specialist ward, take part in a roundtable discussion and deliver a speech to mark the launch of the Nursing Now campaign.

Nursing Now is a major global campaign aimed at raising the profile and status of nursing worldwide, so that nurses can make an even greater contribution at the heart of efforts to tackle rising burdens of disease.

As the health professionals closest to the public, nurses are the lynchpin of effective health teams, playing a crucial role in health promotion, disease prevention and treatment. The Nursing Now campaign will support nurses to become leaders so they can play a greater role in health policy decision-making, helping countries meet the pressing health challenges of the 21st century.

The Duchess of Cambridge will first visit the Snow Leopard ward at St Thomas’s Hospital, where she will see first-hand the expertise and dedication of nurses as they care for children in the Ward. The Snow Leopard Ward at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, which is part of St Thomas’, cares for children who need help breathing to stay alive. The nurse-led team train carers and relatives how to use the child’s ventilation equipment to prepare them for going home.

Her Royal Highness will then join a roundtable discussion with nurses across the career spectrum, from trainees to consultant nurses, and from a range of different countries to find out what it means to be a 21st century nurse and what impact the Nursing Now campaign could have on the profession. Finally, The Duchess will join a launch event in the Main Hall to deliver a speech to mark the launch of the Nursing Now campaign.

The three-year global campaign is being run as a programme of the Burdett Trust for Nursing, in collaboration with the International Council of Nurses and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Nursing Now was founded by nurses and other health experts based on the findings of the 2016 Triple Impact report, produced by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health Co-Chaired by Lord Nigel Crisp, Co-Chair of the Campaign Board of Nursing Now. The report found that as well as improving health globally, empowering nurses would contribute to improved gender equality and build stronger economies.
