HIS MAJESTY THE KING WILL PRESENT THE QUEEN ELIZABETH PRIZE FOR ENGINEERING AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE IN ITS TENTH ANNIVERSARY YEAR

Thursday, 12th October 2023

His Majesty The King will present the 2022 and 2023 Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Engineering during a reception at Buckingham Palace on Thursday 12th October as the prize celebrates its tenth anniversary.

The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering is presented to engineers responsible for groundbreaking innovations that are of global benefit to humanity. Celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year, the QEPrize was first presented in 2013 by Queen Elizabeth II to the developers of the internet and the World Wide Web. The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering is now awarded annually, with the formal presentation event taking place every two years.

The King will arrive in the White Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace and will meet the Chairman of The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, Lord Browne of Madingley, before the prize presentations take place in the Blue Drawing Room. His Majesty will present two Queen Elizabeth Prizes to the 2022 and 2023 winners. The 2022 Queen Elizabeth Prize will be awarded to Dr Masato Sagawa for the discovery, development and global commercialisation of the world’s most powerful permanent magnet (NdFeB), which forms a vital part of smartphones, cars, and robots. It has also been instrumental in the development of energy saving technologies such as wind turbines and electric vehicles.

The 2023 Queen Elizabeth Prize will be presented to four QEPrize laureates – Professor Martin Green, Professor Andrew Blakers, Dr Aihua Wang and Dr Jianhua Zhao – for the invention and development of Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) solar photovoltaic technology. The technology has helped to enable solar power to become a reliable source of electricity across the world.

Each winner will be presented with a unique trophy specially designed through the QEPrize’s global ‘Create the Trophy’ competition. Anja Brandl, an engineering student from Switzerland, designed the 2023 trophy, and web content producer Anshika Agarwal from India designed the 2022 trophy. The winning trophy designs have both been 3D-printed.

After the presentations, the King will join the reception to speak to the prize winners and their families, as well as the winning trophy designers, before departing.

Tuesday 10th October – Thursday 12th October 2023

The Prince and Princess of Wales will carry out engagements across the country next week to mark World Mental Health Day which takes place on Tuesday 10th October.

Their Royal Highnesses, together with The Royal Foundation and in partnership with The Mix and with the support of BBC Radio 1, will host a forum for young people in Birmingham. Exploring our Emotional Worlds will bring together 100 young delegates nominated by ten leading mental health and youth engagement charities to start a conversation about how they manage their emotions and how they can be supported to build their resilience and protective factors such as healthy relationships which make it easier to navigate bumps in the road as they go through life.

Featuring famous faces from Radio 1 and the wider mental health space, the event will give the young attendees the opportunity to talk about the specific mental health challenges their generation faces, explore what more they could do to understand and manage their emotions and discuss the solutions that could support them to better look after their own and each other’s mental wellbeing.

Over the subsequent two days, the Prince and Princess will undertake further engagements to highlight the importance of mental wellbeing, including with university students and emergency responders. They will also shine a light on the interaction between mental health and sport. The series of engagements follows Their Royal Highnesses longstanding commitment to encourage people to speak openly about their mental health, including through the milestone Heads Together campaign that was launched in 2016.

Details of the engagements will be announced in due course.

THE PRINCESS OF WALES WILL VISIT VSI RAZOM COMMUNITY HUB

Bracknell

Wednesday 4th October 2023

The Princess of Wales will visit Vsi Razom Community Hub in the Lexicon shopping centre in Bracknell to hear about the work the organisation has been doing to support those who have arrived in the local area from Ukraine as a result of the ongoing conflict.

The Princess’s visit will coincide with the one-year anniversary of the hub, which was set up by two women living in the local area who came together to support those effected by the conflict, creating a warm, safe place to help Ukrainian residents settle into life in Bracknell Forest. ‘Vsi Razom’ means ‘all together’ in Ukrainian.

During the visit, the Princess will help pack donations of essential items such as food and clothes with young Ukrainians who have moved to the UK in the last year. The packages will be transported back to Ukraine, providing aid to those directly affected by the conflict in the country.

The Princess will then hear from volunteers about the different services the hub provides and join an arts and crafts session with local children. The sessions provide a vital lifeline for displaced Ukrainians to find support, advice and build friendships in their local community.

Finally, Her Royal Highness will meet the hub’s psychologist who runs weekly sessions to provide mental health support to local Ukrainians adjusting to life in the UK and spend time with families who are being supported by the hub. She will hear about their experience of moving to the UK and how the hub has provided an important lifeline for them.

Since the conflict in Ukraine began, the Prince and Princess of Wales have carried out a number of visits to highlight the plight of people in Ukraine and the generous support that communities and organisations across the UK have offered in response. In addition, last November, The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales convened a virtual roundtable meeting to provide advice and share best practice to help support the First Lady of Ukraine’s mental health strategy, which is addressing the impact the ongoing conflict is having upon the mental wellbeing of Ukrainians.

THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES WILL VISIT CARDIFF TO CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Tuesday 3rd October 2023

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush to the UK and mark the start of Black History Month, the Prince and Princess of Wales will visit Cardiff to meet members of the Windrush generation and celebrate the work of diverse community groups in the area.

While in the city, Their Royal Highnesses will also visit a local school to hear about the extensive range of opportunities they offer pupils in the curriculum and the work they have been doing around the Windrush generation.

Engagement 1:

The Prince and Princess will meet with members from the Windrush Cymru Elders, Black History Cymru 365 and the Ethnic Minority Youth Forum for Wales at Grange Pavilion to hear about the incredible contribution the Windrush generation has had on the Welsh community and learn about how young minority ethnic individuals are creating positive change in Wales.

Grange Pavilion is a partnership project between Grange Pavilion Project, Grangetown Community Action, Cardiff University and Cardiff Council which saw them redevelop a previously vacant bowls pavilion into a community facility. The space offers a community café, employment and training opportunities and has become a key meeting place for the Ethnic Minority Youth Forum, Windrush Cymru Elders and Black History Cymru 365 for Wales.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush arriving in the UK, Their Royal Highnesses will first meet members of the Windrush Cymru Elders. The group was established in 2017 as part of Race Council Cymru and aims to promote the understanding of ethnic minority elders’ concerns and needs whilst also celebrating the contributions of the Windrush Generation and people of African descent in Wales. The Prince and Princess will hear about the lived experiences of the elders and the incredible impact the generation has had in Wales.

Following this, the Prince and Princess will meet young people involved in the Ethnic Minority Youth Forum. The forum is a youth advisory panel for Race Council Cymru and consists of young people aged 11-25 who seek to be a voice of change for young people from minority ethnic groups in Wales.

Finally, the Prince and Princess will also engage with local young people from the Somali community which forms a large portion of Grangetown. Their Royal Highnesses will spend time with members of Wales Somaliland Youth Links and Cardiff Bay Warriors FC and hear about the community projects they have been involved in – from football to youth unemployment and building friendships between the young people in Cardiff and Somaliland.

Engagement 2:

The Prince and Princess will then visit Fitzalan High School to hear from pupils about the work they have been doing around black history and learn about the vocational courses the school provides.

Fitzalan High School serves one of the most diverse and disadvantaged communities in Wales and in September 2023 they opened a new school building with a range of state-of-the-art facilities to help pupils achieve their highest potential. A number of pupils in the school are also direct relatives of the Windrush Cymru Elders and are from a variety of cultural backgrounds with 70% of pupils speaking English as a second language.

During the visit, Their Royal Highnesses will first hear from sixth form pupils working in different subject areas both in A Level and vocational studies including a range of science, technology and sports courses as well as a thriving English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) provision for new-to-3English pupils. Their Royal Highnesses will then be taken to the schools brand new immersion room where they will listen to a brief history lesson looking at life in Tiger Bay, a key area where the Windrush Generation lived and the importance of learning about their cultural heritage.

Following this, the Prince and Princess will meet teachers and pupils working across a number of projects at the school, including the gardening project which aims to encourage young pupils to learn how to grow plants and food from scratch.

Finally, on departure Their Royal Highnesses will see a new entrance gate that was designed in partnership with London designer Lara Sparey and pupils from the school to embody ‘What does Fitzalan Mean to Us’? with a variety of symbols and artwork to represent the school and Wales.
