THE QUEEN WILL HOST A RECEPTION AT CLARENCE HOUSE TO MARK THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF MEDICAL DETECTION DOGS

Tuesday 20th February 2024

The Queen will host a reception to mark the 15th anniversary of the charity, Medical Detection Dogs (MDD). During the reception, Her Majesty will meet clients who have Medical Alert Assistance Dogs which are trained by MDD to alert them if a life-threatening medical event is about to happen. The Queen will also meet the charity’s supporters and trustees, before watching a demonstration of dogs at work.

Her Majesty will be greeted by the Chief Executive & Chief Scientific Officer of Medical Detection Dogs Dr Claire Guest.

Her Majesty will meet guests including Michelle, who is supported by MDD and will be accompanied by her Medical Alert Assistance Dog, Spring, who helps to save her life daily, by alerting her when she is about to have a medical emergency caused by Addison’s disease. The Queen will also meet Demi, who will be accompanied by her dog, Bear, who alerts her to Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS) episodes.

Following the reception, Her Majesty will watch a demonstration by a Bio Detection Dog, who will detect Urinary Tract Infections from a selection of samples on stands. Another dog will then demonstrate how MDD’s dogs are making this research a reality, by detecting the odour of UTI on people through passive searching, demonstrating the work of the charity’s new project.

Finally, a puppy in training, Maggie, will deliver a gift to Her Majesty. Standard Poodle puppy Dasher will also be in attendance as part of her socialisation training.

Following the demonstrations, Dr Claire Guest will say a few words, before inviting The Queen to cut an anniversary cake.
