Her Majesty The Queen, Colonel-in-Chief will present a new standard to the Royal Tank Regiment at Windsor Castle
Wednesday 25th April 2018
Her Majesty The Queen, Colonel-in-Chief, will present a new standard to the Royal Tank Regiment at a parade in St. George’s Hall, Windsor Castle on Wednesday 25th April.
Her Majesty will be met in the Grand Reception Room by Major General John Patterson, Colonel Commandant. The Queen will then enter St. George’s Hall and proceed to the Dais for the Royal Salute and the uncasing of the new standard.
Her Majesty will descend the Dais to present the new standard, before returning to make a short address.
Following the parade The Queen will join an official photograph with Officers and Warrant Officers of the Regiment. After which Her Majesty will move to the Grand Reception Room to meet members of the Regimental Family.
Forged during the First World War, the Royal Tank Regiment is the oldest tank unit in the world. Since the Second World War, the Regiment has deployed to almost every major conflict.
In May 1958, Her Majesty The Queen, Colonel-in-Chief, approved the award of Battle Honours to the Regiment, together with the design of a Standard upon which selected Honours were to be emblazoned.
In October 1960, The Queen presented the first Standards to the Regiment’s eight battalions at Buckingham Palace. At the occasion, The Queen recalled that her grandfather, King George V, had seen the first tank demonstrated at Hatfield Park in 1916 and, as the Regiment’s first Colonel-in-Chief, had embodied the Royal Tank Corps in the Regular Army in 1923.
Since 1960, Her Majesty has twice presented new Standards to the Regiment: in 1985 in Sennelager, Germany, to the Regiment’s five battalions; and in 2008 at Buckingham Palace to the remaining two battalions, the 1st Royal Tank Regiment and the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment.
In August 2014, the Regiment amalgamated to become The Royal Tank Regiment. The Standards of the previous two battalions have been carried on parade since then.

A speech given by Her Majesty The Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, at the Formal Opening of CHOGM at Buckingham Palace
“Prime Minister Muscat, Prime Minister May, Secretary-General, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Having on so many occasions been welcomed to opening ceremonies around the Commonwealth, it is a pleasure this time to welcome you to my own home.
Here at Buckingham Palace in 1949, my father met the Heads of Government when they ratified the London Declaration, which created the Commonwealth as we know it today – then comprising just eight nations.
Who then — or in 1952, when I became Head of the Commonwealth — would have guessed that a gathering of its member states would one day number 53, or that it would comprise 2.4 billion people?
Put simply, we are one of the world’s great convening powers: a global association of volunteers who believe in the tangible benefits that flow from exchanging ideas and experiences and respecting each other’s point of view.
And we seem to be growing stronger year by year. The advantages are plain to see. An increasing emphasis on trade between our countries is helping us all to discover exciting new ways of doing business. And imaginative initiatives have shown how together we can bring about change on a global scale. The Commonwealth Canopy has emphasised our interdependence, while the Commonwealth Blue Charter promises to do the same in protecting our shared ocean resources. The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust is providing life-changing eye treatment to many thousands, through the generosity and cooperation of the nations represented here today.
My family and I have been heartened by these and the many other programmes in which we are proud to play a part.
I am glad to see that young people, connecting through technology, are becoming ever more involved. When I meet the young leaders of this century, I remember my own life-long commitment – made in South Africa in 1947 at the age of 21. As another birthday approaches this week, I am reminded of the extraordinary journey we have been on, and how much good has been achieved.
It remains a great pleasure and honour to serve you as Head of the Commonwealth and to observe, with pride and satisfaction, that this is a flourishing network. It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations, and will decide that one day The Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949. By continuing to treasure and reinvigorate our associations and activities, I believe we will secure a safer, more prosperous and sustainable world for those who follow us: a world where the Commonwealth’s generosity of spirit can bring its gentle touch of healing and hope to all.
Mindful as always that this summit of Commonwealth leaders draws its mandate and authority from our member countries collectively, it gives me great pleasure to declare this meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government open.”

PRINCE HARRY AND MS. MEGHAN MARKLE TO ATTEND ANZAC DAY SERVICES
London
Wednesday 25th April, 2018
Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle will attend services commemorating Anzac Day in London on Wednesday 25th April.
Organised by the New Zealand and Australian High Commissions, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will attend the Dawn Service at Wellington Arch, and the Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey. In addition, Prince Harry will attend the Wreath Laying Ceremony and Parade at the Cenotaph.
Anzac Day has been commemorated in London since the first anniversary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli in 1916, when King George V attended a service at Westminster Abbey and more than 2,000 Australian and New Zealand troops marched through the streets. Since then, the services have become an important moment to recognise the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who died during the landings. Anzac Day is commemorated as a public holiday in both countries with memorial ceremonies held at various locations.
The Dawn Service at Wellington Arch, Hyde Park Corner will last approximately 45 minutes. The service will begin at the New Zealand memorial, during which His Royal Highness will lay a wreath. The service will also include readings, the Last Post, silence, reveille and national anthems. His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle, joined by the New Zealand and Australian High Commissioners, will then walk to the Australian memorial, where His Royal Highness will lay a wreath and sign a book of remembrance.
Later in the morning at the Wreath Laying and Parade Service at the Cenotaph, Prince Harry will lay a wreath on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen. Between 300 and 400 participants will take part in the parade, including member of veterans’ associations, service and ex-service personnel and their families.
Following this parade, Prince Harry will join Ms. Markle at the Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey. This will be a traditional church service, incorporating an ‘Act of Remembrance’, the Last Post and Kemal Ataturk’s words from Anzac Cove read by the Turkish Ambassador to the UK.

Her Majesty The Queen recognises UK volunteer with Commonwealth award
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II – as Head of the Commonwealth – has recognised UK volunteer Rob Mather as the 53rd Commonwealth Point of Light. The award is in honour of his outstanding work to reduce cases of malaria and child mortality across the Commonwealth and the world.
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge presented Mather with a certificate signed by The Queen during a reception to welcome thousands of delegates to the UK as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018.
Mather is the CEO and founder of the Against Malaria Foundation (AMF), an organisation that works to reduce malaria cases and child mortality by providing millions of malaria nets to developing countries. AMF has distributed more than 70 million nets worldwide, with 25 million going to 15 Commonwealth nations.
Rob Mather, CEO and founder of AMF, said: “It is an honour to have the work of the Against Malaria Foundation recognised in this way. Many people and organisations have supported AMF in a voluntary capacity over many years and this recognition is of them also as AMF would not have been able to contribute in the way it has without them.
“All of us at AMF are passionate about contributing to the reduction and eventual elimination of malaria. My own motivation has been simple. My four children go to sleep at night where a mosquito bite would lead to an annoying itch. Many other people have children and family members for whom the consequences of a mosquito bite could be severe illness, or far worse, so we won’t stop working as a team and with many partners until that has been changed.”
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, said: “It’s reflective of Her Majesty The Queen’s long-standing commitment to the Commonwealth that she would want to shine a light on individuals who have made such a difference to the lives of people and communities within it. Rob Mather and all of the Commonwealth Points of Light are unsung heroes and it’s a privilege to express our gratitude to them in this way.”
As leaders prepare to come together for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018 to address shared global challenges, The Queen has been recognising one inspirational volunteer from each of the 53 Commonwealth nations for their contribution to tackling some of these challenges.
Known as Commonwealth Points of Lights, 53 outstanding volunteers have been recognised and received a personalised certificate signed by The Queen. Mather is the Commonwealth Point of Light for the UK and the final recipient to be recognised.
The Against Malaria Foundation has been named the most effective charity in the world by independent charity evaluator GiveWell for the past 5 years. AMF has raised over $158 million and uses 100% of public donations to buy and distribute mosquito nets. Other costs are covered by dedicated donors. Inspired by the Foundation’s goals, transparency and efficiency, nearly 530,000 people have donated to its cause.
